Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 16: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

A couple of potential theme-related heads up regarding physical media...

For the Godzilla/Kaiju theme - Word on the street is the Gamera: The Complete Collection set from Arrow will be selling out soon and won't be sticking around until the 8/18 street date.
Amazon Amazon
currently has it in stock, and Mike from Grindhouse Video said more copies are coming there soon. If you've been on the fence now's the time to act. This sucker, unlike the anorexic Godzilla Criterion set, is the same size as the Herschell Gordon Lewis cereal box set, FYI

For the 'Analog Nightmares' shot-on-video theme - The SRS Social Distancing Sale is still happening and has a few SOV titles. Just do your research because they don't always list dates and some are are for the modern ones that aren't from the 80's & 90's.

I ordered this and The Inner Sanctum set from DDD a few months back. Hoping they don't cancel this one....

Has anyone seen the films that SRS releases? They seem pretty obscure to me, but I'm down for discovering new SOV horror films. I recently got AGFA's release of Blood Lake and really enjoyed it. I enjoy slashers more than gross out horror, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 16: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

My votes:

New:
R.I.P. Ennio Morricone (1928 - 2020)
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Godzilla is a Retiree!
One-Word Titles
They Shoot Zombies, Don’t They? – The 1,000 Greatest Horror Films
Title Spoken By Character
The Four Seasons of Death
Franchise Horror
I Spit on Your Garage
The Big Apple of Death
The Pen is Deadlier Than the Sword - Writers
Random Maniacal Mashup of Insane Indecisiveness: Chapter 3
20/20: Vision of Optic Terror
Anxiety-Inducing Cinema
Deadly Exposure - Photographic Horror
The Guillermo del Toro Seal of Approval
Adaptations from Hell
Blood Showers
Suburban Horror *
"No Wild Card Needed" Day

Returning:

Curses
Family-Friendly
Folklore, Urban Legends & Fairy Tale Horror
Killer Monkeys / Gorillas / Jungle
Made-for-TV Movies / Mini-Series
Psychic Abilities / ESP
Schools Out ...Forever
Subterranean

* The link for this one seems to be about "family horror" (as in, horror involving families, not family-friendly horror). Is that the intention, or is it supposed to be horror set in suburbia? If the latter, here are some alternate link suggestions, to pull it out of the under-50 club: Sinister Suburbia | the suburbs | IMDb keyword=suburb | IMDb keyword=small-town

Was gonna recommend Dream Stalker until realizing it's from Intervision. Looking through DVD Profiler I have over 20 of their releases and they're all still wrapped. I'll share any finds if I ever get around to watching any before the challenge starts though.

Coincidentally I received my SRS sale order today and inside was a DVD for What a Deal! Secrets to Buying and Selling At Antique Flea Markets. Apparently the crowd that watches Gore Whore isn't into antique furniture as much as they anticipated. Weird.

Yeah, it was definitely supposed to be the latter. No idea how that link found its way there.

It shot up from 19 to 680 titles (also added a few video and TV movies to up the count), so thank you!

Everything I have is from Intervision. When VS does one of their sales, they are priced very nicely.

  • This is for both new and returning, 2 themes.

  • If you've already voted, no problem. Just remember there's been quite a few additions added recently, so please recheck the suggestions list on post 6 periodically. Occasionally new theme suggestions are added after voting starts.

  • There's no limit to how many times you can vote, or how many themes you can vote for. The only "rule" is one vote per theme. You can do it in this thread, or if you prefer privately - PM or via email. Makes no difference to me.

  • Also, keep in mind that some themes have unfinished or better lists/links coming. No such examples this year, but they would be cleaned up with hyperlinks directing to the main thread later if chosen.

  • Certain themes might have to be combined with another theme or two if they don't provide enough titles.

  • And finally, don't hesitate to share any last-minute suggestion submissions, which brings me back to what was said earlier -- recheck the list periodically.
The reminder. I should also have the first round to make the cut before the weekend ends. This year the possibility exists we *might* be able to go directly to the elimination round. It's the opposite of last year where the votes were spread all over and practically everything received at least one vote.

11 subset volunteers still needed, BTW.

You can add Wilford Brimley to the list. He had a few horror credits.

You guys should check your public library and see if they have access to Kanopy. It's a free streaming service. You can register with a library card. And they have a Roku app.

There's a ton of horror flicks that aren't available on other streaming services. They have a decent selection of classic Euro Horror. Lots of stuff from Bava, Argento, Fulci and Rollin.

I also see a bunch of Asian Horror from the old Tartan Asia Extreme label.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 16: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

The first round of themes that made the cut...

NEW
  • The COVID-19 Pandemic Parade - Medical / Masks / Virus / Isolation / Social Bubbles / Vaccine / Hand Washing
  • They Shoot Zombies, Don’t They? – The 1,000 Greatest Horror Films
  • Godzilla is a Retiree! The 65th Anniversary Celebration of Gojira & the Kaiju Films it Inspired
  • The Big Apple of Death - NYC Based Horror
  • R.I.P. Ennio Morricone
  • "The Drive-In Oath" by Joe Bob Briggs Featuring Blood, Breasts, & Beasts
  • Analog Nightmares - Shot-On-Video Horror Films of the 1980's & 1990's
  • The Guillermo del Toro Seal of Approval

RETURNING
  • Folklore, Urban Legends & Fairy Tales
  • Hammer / Amicus / Ealing / Black & Blue
  • The European Passport to Terror

Alright, these are now on the official list. There's actually more (both new and returning) that I'll try and announce Monday when I'm headache-free. In fact, we're definitely going straight to the elimination round next.

The Pandemic Parade was the top vote-getter followed by They Shoot Zombies, Don't They?, FYI.

Stay tuned...

Letterboxd was down earlier today. It seems to be working now, at least for me.

Thanks. Scanning the list, I've never heard of any of these. Guess it's not something I've ever dabbled in before.

SOV titles can definitely be a crapshoot, but if you do your research they can be an absolute blast. Go in blind and you could end up with an 80 minute regional flick starring someone's Uncle that feels like 3 hours of excruciating pain.

And plenty of ways to view them - Vinegar Syndrome, Intervision, AGFA, Massacre Video, SRS, etc. for physical media. YouTube and Prime Video have more than a few. Roku channels like B-Movie TV and B-Zone both play them from time to time.

I just love the fact something like The Nostril Picker has the potential to become a subset.

I'll start the final round of theme voting (elimination round) on Wednesday night (8/5). Since we were able to skip the second round of voting that put right back on track with last year's schedule.
