Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge History - 2008: 32; 2009: 82; 2010: 66; 2011: 45; 2012: 36; 2013: 84.25; 2014: 54; 2015: 50

Note: I am using the "traditional" counting method - Each film counts as 1; 2 hours of television content counts as 1. I prefer this method for several reasons. The main one being it makes it easier to compare how I'm doing to previous years.

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

My First Sci Fi Challenge

June 30

1. Star Wars 1: The Phantom Menace (1999). I watched this with the director commentary track. the jar jar character just grates on me, but overall i like the film. 7 out of 10.. Blu-Ray Box set

July 1st

3. Star Wars 2: Attack of the Clones (2002). I watched this one with the commentary track. The second installment of the prequels is a half hour too long and the political intrigue just is not interesting, but chris lee as dooku and the last 45 minutes saves it. 8 out of 10. Blu-Ray Box set

4. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970).. Continuing my journey through the legacy box set. The sequel to the classic film with James franiscus in the star role. He does a work-man like performance, but the gorilla general steals the show. 7 out of 10. Blu-Ray Legacy Box set

5. Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971). As with most film series, the apes films start to take a nose dive with this film. The film is cheap and is played for comic relief. thin story line. 5 out of 10. Blu-Ray

6. Spaceways(1953) I am a huge hammer fan, but i have never seen this early entry. Not a bad film, but more of a murder mystery wrapped around an attempt to send the first rocket into earth's orbit. 5 out of 10. Youtube
[/U][/B]

July 2nd

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

Title in BLACK = From my personal DVD / Blu Ray collection
Title in RED = Seen online

July 1
1. Game of Thrones
, S6 (2016) Episodes: The broken man / No one
2. Robin of Sherwood, S1 (1984) Episodes: Robin Hood and the Sorcerer, parts 1 & 2 The mystical elements of this 1980's series are enough to justify its inclusion on this list. Still the best version of Robin Hood ever made and nothing before or since has even come close. The writing is top-notch through the series, the actors were perfectly cast and the overall feel of the series seamlessly blends the realistic with the magical. One of my favourite TV series of all time and highly recommended.

July 2
3. Game of Thrones
, S6 (2016) Episodes: Battle of the bastards / The winds of winter After six season and a ton of characters running around from one end of Westerns to the other the main plot lines that were introduced in season 1 are still not resolved - the invasion of the zombie-like White Walkers and the claim to the Iron Throne by Daenerys Targaryen. This series has really started to overstay it's welcome, just wrap it all up already.
4. Robin of Sherwood, S1 (1984) Episodes: The witch of Elsdon / Seven poor knights from Acre

July 3
5. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(1977 - Theatrical Version) Incredibly enough I had never seen this movie complete from beginning to end. I had only previously seen parts of it when it shows on TV and after finding the Blu Ray for 5 bucks at Walmart then I just had to get it. Now that I've seen it I can see why it's a classic. The effects are still astounding and the acting is just above and beyond most movies. The movie really grounds the oft-told tale of first contact by concentrating on the characters and how the close encounter effects them. Of course, Steven Spielberg's script and direction are the main reason this movie is such a classic.

July 4
6. Robin of Sherwood
, S1 (1984) Episodes: Alan A Dale / The king's fool

July 5
7. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(1980 - The Special Edition) The main difference between this end the theatrical version is that at the end
Spoiler:
we follow the Richard Dreyfuss character into the spaceship for more special effects that add absolutely nothing to the story.
Apart from that there are some detailed scenes that are also pretty pointless and were wisely removed from the theatrical cut.

July 6
8. Robin of Sherwood
, S2 (1984) Episodes: The prophecy / Children of Israel

July 7
9. Close Encounters of the Third Kind
(2000 - Director's Cut) An amalgam of scenes from the theatrical cut and the Special Edition that retains the ending of the theatrical cut.

July 8
10. Contact
(1997) One of the few movies that tries to put some scientific thinking behind a possible first contact scenario. Mainly that such an encounter would come not by massive alien ships but by long range tansmission. Jodie Foster's performance is Oscar-worthy and the script based on astronomer's Carl Sagan's novel is very intelligent and thought-provoking.

July 9
11. Robin of Sherwood
, S2 (1984-85) Episodes: Lord of the trees / The enchantment

July 10
12. Robin of Sherwood
, S2 (1985) Episodes: The swords of Wayland Parts 1 & 2

July 11
13. Robin of Sherwood
, S1 (1985) Episodes: The greatest Enemy / Special features

July 12
14. Contact
(1997) Seen with commentary by Jodie Foster. Since Jodie Foster herself is a highly intelligent person, its no wonder she was attracted to this project. Her insights of how the mind her character works are very illuminating since they mirror her own life as a child prodigy.

July 13
15. Robin of Sherwood
, S2 (1985) Special features

July 14
15. Robin of Sherwood
, S3 (1986) Episodes: Herne's son Parts 1 & 2

July 15
16. Robin of Sherwood
, S3 (1986) Episodes: The power of Albion / The inheritance

July 16
17. Jupiter Ascending
(2015) A visual overload and a story crammed with characters we care nothing about in a convoluted and lame story about "the chosen one". Good grief. See it for Mila Kunis only if you must.

July 17
18. Robin of Sherwood
, S3 (1986) Episodes: The Sheriff of Nottingham / The Cross of St. Ciricus
19. Star Odyssey (1979)

July 18
19.25 Rocky Jones, Space Ranger
(1954) Episode: Escape into space

July 19
20. Shazam!
, S1 (1974) Episodes: The joyriders / The brothers / Thou shalt not kill

July 20
21. Robin of Sherwood
, S3 (1986) Episodes: Cromm Cruac / The betrayal
22. Robin of Sherwood, S3 (1986) Episodes: Adam Bell / The pretenderl

July 21
22.5 Shazam!
, S1 (1974) Episodes: The lure of the lost / The road back

July 22
23. Shazam!
, S1 (1974) Episodes: The athlete / The boy who said no
24. Shazam!, S1 (1974) Episodes: The doom buggy / The brain / Little boy lost / The delinquent

July 23
25. Shazam!
, S1-2 (1974-75) Episodes: The braggart / The past is not forever / The gang's all here / On winning

July 24
26. Shazam!
, S2 (1975) Episodes: Debbie / Fool's gold / Double trouble / Goodbye, Packy

July 25
27. Shazam!
, S2 (1975) Episodes: Speak no evil / The odd couple / The contest

July 26
28. Shazam!
, S3 (1975) Episodes: Bitter herbs / Ripcord / Finder's keeper's / Sound of a different drummer

July 27
28.25 Shazam!
, S3 (1975) Episode: Out of focus
29. Land of the Lost, S1 (1974) Episodes: Cha-Ka / The Sleestak god / Dopey

July 28
30. Stranger Things
, S1 (2016) Episodes: The Vanishing of Will Byers / The Weirdo on Maple Street

Re: The 9th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge List Thread

Brainee's 2016 DVDTalk Summer Sci-Fi Challenge List

Goal: not much
Total: 33.5
First Time Views: 32.5

= first time viewing

For the first half of the month I've been out of town, and I'm fuzzy on specific dates. But here's what I have so far:

1. ☼ The Purge: Anarchy (2016): I should've known better than to see this on opening weekend. A theater full of talking jackasses pretty much ruined it for me

2. Deadpool (2016): Repeat viewing watching with my family (who didn't see it before). It was a big hit with the household!

3. ☼ The BFG (2016): Minor Spielberg is still entertaining. Though I think I'm well past the age where fart jokes are funny (and which unfortunately this movie has an abundance of).

4. ☼ 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016): I managed to keep myself from being spoiled ... not that I still didn't see the ending coming from a mile away. Still good. Is there supposed to be any link between this and Cloverfield? Because I sure didn't see any.

5. ☼ Dark Star: H.R. Giger's World (2014): Really low-key documentary that was less of a life story of Giger than what I was expecting ... and more of a portrayal of Giger in his final days.

6. ☼ Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014): Really fun documentary. I figure with all the sci-fi and fantasy movies Cannon did that this should be an easy wildcard (if not qualifying for a full-blown entry). Wildcard #1

7. ☼ The Dead Lands (2014): There were enough fantasy/supernatural elements that I guess this could be a wildcard too. Though the basic story is nothing new, the Maori setting makes it unique. Wildcard #2

8. ☼ The Boy and the Beast (2015): The last feature by Mamoru Hosoda, who in my book has taken over the title of best anime director with Miyazaki's retirement.

9. ☼ When Marnie Was There (2014): Sadly Studio Ghibli's last movie It's not listed as a fantasy, but I certainly think it qualifies (even if the fantasy elements are more reality-based).

July 14th
10. ☼ Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016): More of the same, which I guess isn't a bad thing.

July 15th
11. ☼ The Mermaid (2016): I've seen most of Stephen Chow's other movies, so I knew what I was in for: a mix of cartoon slapstick, mugging for the camera, startlingly inappropriate violence, some rousing action scenes, a weird romance, and a good score. But with enough stuff going on that I was kept entertained. It's hard to believe the budget was $60 million (US dollars), since the effects were distractingly bad (on the level of a SyFy channel original movie). If China has the budgets for big-time fantasy and sci-fi movies, I wish they would outsource the technical work or do a big step-up of their in-house production. But this made so much money, I'm sure they don't care. The one part of the movie that had me laughing the most was completely effect-free:
Spoiler:
that scene where the cops kept doing these awful sketches of half-human/half-fish combinations had me rolling

Stranger Things (2016): Ep 1

July 16th
12. ☼ Midnight Special (2016): This is the new release from the director of Mud and Take Shelter, starring Kirsten Dunst, Michael Shannon, and Adam Driver). It was alright. Very well made, but I wish it went somewhere (or at least went somewhere a bit more).

13. ☼ Stranger Things (2016): Ep 2

July 17th
14. ☼ The Lobster (2015): As a single guy, this is a lot more disturbing than most horror movies (especially with hearing political rhetoric from the right how the only acceptable state for people in their "ideal society" are married men and women). Comparisons to Black Mirror are apt: this has the same unsettling tone with a twist on something we can already see starting today.

15. ☼ Stranger Things (2016): Eps 3 and 4

July 21st
16. ☼ Hardcore Henry (2015):

17 and 18. ☼ Stranger Things (2016): Eps 5-8

July 22nd
19. ☼ Time Lapse (2014): Pretty decent indie ... like a mix of Shallow Grave with the familiar time-travel trope of a machine that lets you see into the future (an idea that's shown up in movies and tv episodes before). With such a power, one has to question the decisions of the nitwit main characters. But I guess that's kind of the point (lazy slackers with a power way beyond their ability to handle).

20. ☼ Magnetic (2015): I guess you have to rate these kinds of movies on a curve ... ultra-micro budget with a single actress (who can't particularly act). I got the sense the filmmakers ambition far exceeded their ability. Still, an interesting soundtrack and a short running time made it watchable.

July 23rd
21. ☼ The Zero Theorem (2013): I'm not sure how I completely missed this when it first came out. A Terry Gilliam movie through and through. Very evocative of Brazil (but with a brighter color palette).

22. ☼ Tale of Tales (2015): This I really liked. Visually reminded me of The Fall, with a great classic fairy tale feel (albeit one for adults).

23. ☼ Southbound (2015): imdb lists this a fantasy so I'm counting it ... but I would say it's a straight-horror movie (more appropriate for the October challenge). Some effective moments, but I really wish the filmmakers made things a little more coherent.

23.5. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 1): eps 1 and 2.

July 24th
24. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 1): eps 3 and 4.

25. ☼ Dollhouse (season 1): eps 1 and 2

26. ☼ Holy Motors (2012):

27. ☼ Patema Inverted (2013): Never saw the live-action Upside Down ... which came out before this (but this was based on a manga that predates everything). I really needed a good bit of sci-fi entertainment after the head scratcher that was Holy Motors.

27.75. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 1): eps 5, 6, 7

July 25th
28.5. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 1): eps 8, 9, 10

29. ☼ Dollhouse (season 1): ep 3

29.75. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 1): eps 11, 12, 13

July 27th
30.5. ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 2): eps 1, 2, 3

July 28th
31. ☼ Dollhouse (season 1): ep 4

July 29th
32. ☼ A Letter to Momo (2011): Very sweet and well-done ... my only quibble is that the running time seemed a bit long for the story that was told.

33. ☼ Dollhouse (season 1): ep 5; ☼ Star Wars Rebels (season 2): eps 4 and 5

July 30th
33.5. ☼ Dollhouse (season 1): ep 6

I really didn't want to end my list on a fraction, but I lost power later in the day on Sunday and ended up just going to bed
