The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

In a nutshell, here are the basics:
  • This challenge will run from 12:01 AM 1 June until 11:59 PM 30 June.
  • Movies and TV content specifically about a historical figure, event or period are eligible.
  • Tangential content (i.e., fantasy, time travel, movies merely set in a generic "past" where the time period is not emphasized as important) is to be excluded. There are plenty of other challenges for that kind of thing.

Is TV Content Allowed?
Certainly! Just make sure that it's as consistent with the spirit of the challenge as the movies you might watch. We used to allow anything on The History Channel carte blanche but with the proliferation of reality TV shows there, try to remember that no matter how dangerous driving a semi across ice is, it isn't "historical"...yet!

Counting
Many of the films at the heart of this challenge have considerable run times, so even though there's always a sort of de facto goal of hitting 100 movies watched, it's not really expected here. We'd much rather you take this opportunity to finally see Lawrence of Arabia than to squeeze in two shorter films.

Since there are no prizes for this challenge, feel free to count using whichever method best suits you. The standard is that 2 TV broadcast hours or short films is equivalent to 1 movie. Some members prefer to count each episode or short as a single entry. Others tally their cumulative viewing time. Whatever floats your boat. It's your list!

Why Aren't Documentaries on the Checklist?
It's up to each participant to decide what mix of dramatizations and documentaries best suits him or her. If you want to watch documentaries exclusively, you're welcome to do that. If you don't want to watch any, that's fine, too. Some checkmarks will be easier to attain with docs, though!

Hey, What About...?
I'm the host and my BA was earned in history, but I haven't seen every movie ever made and I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of every historical figure, event and period. Regarding specific films, I would suggest--and this goes for any questions--that you ask about a specific film in the discussion thread and see what feedback you get from others who have seen it. If you don't get anything helpful, my rule of thumb is that if you feel that you have a sufficient reason to believe that it's an appropriate selection then go ahead and watch it. If it turns out not to really fit the nature of this challenge, still count it as a viewing but please share your thoughts with us.

CHECKLIST
Spoiler:
GENERAL
WHEN
Watch a film that takes place during five different centuries prior to the 20th Century (Note Century of setting):
--- Movie 1 (Century)
--- Movie 2 (Century)
--- Movie 3 (Century)
--- Movie 4 (Century)
--- Movie 5 (Century)

WHERE
Watch 5 movies about historical events of different countries (Note Country of setting).
--- Movie 1 (Country)
--- Movie 2 (Country)
--- Movie 3 (Country)
--- Movie 4 (Country)
--- Movie 5 (Country)

WHO
FOLKLORE & FAITH
--- Film about prehistory [it's probably best to look for a documentary here]
--- Film about mythology of Antiquity (i.e., Greek gods, dramatization of Homeric poems, etc.)
--- Film about religious history (based on either recorded historical events or fables arising from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.)
--- Film about a folk hero
--- Film about either the Humanities (fine arts) or Sports figure/event

HEY, THEY WERE THERE, TOO!: A LOOK AT MARGINALIZED PEOPLES
(Focus on prominent figures from history and/or depictions of their minority group's oppression, etc.)
--- Film about Women's History
--- Film about Race Relations
--- Film about the LGBTQ Community
--- Film about Religious Minority
--- Film about Immigrants

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (1/2)
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR
--- War film that was produced *during* that war
--- War film that focuses on civilians
--- Film about war criminals
--- Film about veterans (framing a "flashback" film doesn't count, so no Saving Private Ryan for this one)
--- Wartime propaganda film OR a film produced by the military

Watch 5 movies that take place during different wars.
--- Movie 1
--- Movie 2
--- Movie 3
--- Movie 4
--- Movie 5

WESTERN
Watch at least five of seven Western Subgenres - taken from Frank Gruber's list on Wikipedia
--- The Union Pacific story. (The plot concerns construction of a railroad, a telegraph line, or some other type of modern technology or transportation.) Wagon train stories probably fall into this category.
--- The ranch story. (The plot concerns threats to the ranch from rustlers or large landowners attempting to force out the proper owners.)
--- The empire story. (The plot might involve building up a ranch empire or an oil empire from scratch, a classic rags-to-riches plot.)
--- The revenge story. (The plot often involves an elaborate chase and pursuit, but it may also include elements of the classic mystery story.)
--- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.)
--- The outlaw story. (The outlaw gangs dominate the action.)
--- The marshal story. (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.)

--- Western not produced in America
--- "Export Western" - a Western not actually set in America. There have been numerous Westerns set in Australia, for instance. Samurai films could count for this, too, given the relationship between the two genres.
--- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show, since Westerns were part of TV's golden age before the Space Generation
--- Neo-Western (i.e., a Western set in more contemporary times, to demonstrate the genre is still alive)

ZEITGEIST WILD CARDS
Because an argument can be made that some movies which fall outside the "obvious" scope of our challenge really are consistent with its spirit, you're permitted to watch and check off up to three optional movies of your choice.
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #1
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #2
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #3

-X- Film about Women's History: Coco Before Chanel (2009)
-X- Film about Race Relations: The New World (2005)
--- Film about the LGBTQ Community
-X- Film about Religious Minority: Brideshead Revisited (1981)
--- Film about Immigrants

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (1/2)
--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR
--- War film that was produced *during* that war
--- War film that focuses on civilians
-X- Film about war criminals: Pinochet's Last Stand (2006)
--- Film about veterans (framing a "flashback" film doesn't count, so no Saving Private Ryan for this one)
--- Wartime propaganda film OR a film produced by the military

Watch 5 movies that take place during different wars.
-X- World War II: Battle of the Bulge (1965)
-X- Vietnam War: Platoon (1986)
--- Movie 3
--- Movie 4
--- Movie 5

-X- The empire story: Cimarron (1960), Sabra Cravat builds an Oklahoman newspaper empire after the first Land Rush
--- The revenge story. (The plot often involves an elaborate chase and pursuit, but it may also include elements of the classic mystery story.)
--- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.)
-X- The outlaw story: 3 Godfathers (1948)
--- The marshal story. (The lawman and his challenges drive the plot.)

--- Western not produced in America
-X- "Export Western" - The Magnificent Seven (1960) takes place in Mexico
-X- Western movie with a direct connection to a TV show: James Arness shows up in Many Rivers to Cross (1955) the same year Gunsmoke begins

-X- Zeitgeist Wild Card #1: Mulan (1998)
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #2
--- Zeitgeist Wild Card #3

Re: The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

1. Apache - Indians being shipped off to different lands by the white man, with some resisting and some accepting.
2. Salt of the Earth - Migrant miners, along with some white miners, striking for more rights.
3. Major Dundee - Fighting between American soldiers and the French and Indians.
4. The Red Badge of Courage - Fresh volunteers to the American Jihad, on the yankee side, go into their first battles.
5. Ooga Booga - Borderline in a way for the challenge but fits in with the racism issues I've been doing as part of a theme to the challenge. The backstory includes a of the racist cop in the main story killing blacks and a racist judge doing what he can to keep him out of trouble. He has a partner that goes along with things unwillingly because if he speaks up any more than the bare minimum, he knows he and his family will end up being targeted as well.

Re: The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme. Mark Twain

1. The Notorious Bettie Page (2005) * 91 min. Insightful biography of 1950s model.
2. Earth (1998) * 101 min. An upper class 8 year old Parsee girl watches as her Hindu nanny and her group of Hindu, Muslim and Sikh friends are torn apart in 1947 Lahore as India and Pakistan are partitioned.
3. Gates of Heaven * (1978) 83 min. Documentary about pet cemeteries reveals American passions, dreams, quirks and ambitions.
4. The Bargain (1914) * 69 min. Star making role for William S. Hart, one of the first great western actors, playing the first of his good bad man roles.
5. Vernon, Florida (1981) * 56 min. Errol Morris goes to a small town and lets some (mostly odd) people talk about their obsessions. Kind of rambling.
6. Blazing Across The Pecos (1948) * 56 min. Good B western with the Durango Kid battling crooked town boss who is trying to drive his rival out of business. Very good action and stunt work.
7. The Thin Blue Line (1988) 101 min. Documentary which exposed a miscarriage of justice, and was a significant factor in the release of Randall Adams from a life sentence (originally a death sentence, before a successful appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court) for murder of a police officer.
8. Bonanza Town (1951) * 55 min.
9. Two Soldiers (2003) * 40 min.

Re: The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge

List is complete.

* = First time viewing

June 01
01. The Texans (1938)* (Classic Western Round-Up Vol. 2)
Date: 1865 Place: Texas, Mexico, Kansas
Impoverished but feisty southern ranchers and ex-soldiers try to get by under the oppressive rules set up by Yankee carpetbaggers. In order to escape a dollar a head cattle tax, one rancher starts a cattle drive first to Mexico and then north to Abilene. Not the tightest plot but entertaining. A good cast including Randolph Scott, Walter Brennan, and Raymond Hatton helps. 5/10
02. California (1946)* (Classic Western Round-Up Vol. 2)
Date: 1848-1849 Place: Mostly California
Epic story of the days right before California became a state concerning an ex-slave ship captain who wants the land for his personal empire. I had my doubts about Ray Milland as a western hero and I'm still on the fence. It didn't help that he got the crap kicked out of him twice. Also there wasn't much chemistry between Milland and leading lady Barbara Stanwyck. 5/10
03. Secret Origins: The Story of DC Comics (2010)*
A good overview with some interesting comments. Not a whole lot new for a die hard DC fan but it was nice to see good photos of Mort Weisinger and film of Alan Moore. There were also some insightful comments on the changes in the big three heroes around the time the Comics Code was instituted. Was it the Code or just a sign of the times? I'm still pondering that.

June 02
04. The Blue Max (1966)* (Fox Studio Classics 75th Anniversary 4 Disc Set)
Date: 1916, mostly 1918 Place: France, Berlin
Story of an overly ambitious German pilot who becomes somewhat of a political pawn. Long but very good movie with some terrific battle scenes also examines issues of honor and political expedience. Good cast. 7/10

June 04
05. Rocket Science (2002) Ep. 1 The Rocketeers* / Ep. 2 The Last Empty Sky*
A Canadian documentary TV show about the history of the U.S. space program. The first episode is about the attempts to break the sound barrier and to get into space and the x-series of rocket planes that did both. Lots of interview time with Chuck Yeager, Scott Crossfield and William J. Knight and great footage of the planes. The second episode covers the development of rocket engines from 1920-1957 and spends a lot of time on Robert Goddard and Wernher von Braun. It was interesting to discover that Goddard invented the bazooka right at the end of World War 1.

June 08
06. The Longest Day (1962)
Date: Early June, 1945 Place: England, France
The story of D-Day told from both the Axis and Allied sides. I particularly liked the first part of the film which covered the lead-up to the invasion, especially the German perspective. The last hour or so is almost pure action but action with a point, telling well laid out stories of particular military objectives that had to be met. 7/10

June 22
07. The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007)

5. Hidalgo - La Historia Jamás Contada* (Hidalgo - The Untold Story)
* (2010) Not to be confused with the Viggo Mortensen film of the same name. This one tells the story of the Mexican priest who was instrumental in the war of independence from the Spanish crown. The film, however does not deal with the events that made him famous but rather his earlier life that shows him as an independent thinker who rebels against society's standards. The movie is a bit scattered and plot-less but still worth a passing look.

June 6
6. The Pillars of the Earth
* (2010) TV mini-series. Episodes: Anarchy / Master builder

June 7
7. The Pillars of the Earth
* (2010) TV mini-series. Episodes: Redemption / Battlefield

June 8
8. The Pillars of the Earth
* (2010) TV mini-series. Episodes: Legacy / Witchcraft

June 9
9. The Pillars of the Earth
* (2010) TV mini-series. Episodes: New beginnings / The work of angels Very good mini-series based on Ken Follett's lengthy novel about the building of a cathedral during England's middle ages. Liked it so much that immediately afterwards I started reading the book.

June 10-14 - Nothing

June 15
10. The Ten Commandments
* (2006) TV mini-series, part 1 Not the famous Charlton Heston classic but instead the Hallmark Channel mini-series which strays far from the Biblical telling of this tale and presents Moses as a brooding, conflicted man. Much violence is presented in the film and God as portrayed as a vengeful, violent, spiteful God. I'll stick with Charlton Heston, thank you very much.

June 16
11. The Ten Commandments
* (2006) TV mini-series, part 2
12. Auto Focus* (2002) The life and death of actor Bob Crane, best known from the TV show Hogan's Heroes. Greg Kinnear is amazing as Crane and the movie paints a vivid portrait not only of the actor but of the entire era of the late 60's and early 70's.
13. Murder in Scottsdale* (2003) Documentary included as a special feature in the Auto Focus DVD detailing the investigation and trial of the Bob Crane murder case.

June 17
12. Jeremiah Johnson
(1972) I could watch this movie over and over again. Robert Redford is the titular character who strives to become a mountain man. The beautiful Utah wilderness serves as a backdrop for this great tale.

June 18
13. Napoleon
* (2002) TV mini-series Episode 1: 1795-1800

June 19
14. Napoleon
* (2002) TV mini-series Episode 2: 1800-1807

June 20
15. Napoleon
* (2002) TV mini-series Episode 3: 1807-1812

June 21
16. Napoleon
* (2002) TV mini-series Episode 4: 1812-1821 Epic doesn't even begin to describe this TV mini-series about the rise and fall and rise again and fall again of France's most famous citizen. Sprawling battles galore, an all-star cast and a gripping story that is never dull despite its six hour length makes this perhaps the definitive Napoleon film.

June 22
Zeitgeist film No. 1 - The Great Gatsby*
(2013) No historical significance, and the recreation of early 20th century New York is so highly stylized as to render it almost a fantasy. Still, a visually impressive film but it does drag on a bit.

June 23
17. Rojo Amanece
r* (1990) Mexican film based on the killing of protesting students in 1968 just prior to the Olympics. The massacre is never shown and instead the whole story is told through the eyes of a family in an apartment building next to the plaza where the events took place. A slow burn that builds to a harrowing climax. Highly recommended.

June 24
18. The Rise and Fall of WCW
* (2009) Documentary detailing the famous wrestling organization long associated with Ted Turner's channel.

June 25
19. Lenin: The Train
* (1988) TV mini-series part 1

June 26
20. Lenin: The Train
* (1988) TV mini-series part 1 Deathly dull European mini-series about Lenin's return to Russia on a train. Yes, you read that right, that's what the whole movie is about. Ben Kingsley sleepwalks through the whole thing. As boring as Socialism itself. You have been warned.

June 27
21. Cleopatra
* (1999) TV mini-series part 1

June 28
22. Cleopatra
* (1999) TV mini-series part 2 Highly romanticized version of the life and loves of Cleopatra. Historically accurate? Probably not, but yes very entertaining and Leonor Varela is very nice to look at in the titular role.

June 29
22. Robin Hood
(2010) (Director's Cut) Any similarity with the much beloved legend of Robin Hood is kept to a minimum in this grandiose adaptation that takes the Outlaw out of Sherwood Forest and into the midst of a lot of political goings on regarding a French invasion of England. Very long-winded and with lots of battles. Russel Crowe and Cate Balnchett are miscast and the whole thing is Robin Hood in name only.

June 30
23. Gandhi
(1982)
24. Secrets of the Dead* (2013) Episode: The Silver Pharaoh (Seen online on the PBS website) Documentary about Psusennes I, a little known Pharaoh whose tomb rivals that of King Tut.

Spoiler:

-X- Film about religious history (based on either recorded historical events or fables arising from Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc.) The Ten Commandments

-X- Film about Race Relations - Gandhi

--- Film about the LGBTQ Community

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY

--- Watch at least two movies about the same person/event where each movie is from a different perspective (2/2)

WAR
--- War film that was produced *during* that war

Watch 5 movies that take place during different wars.
-X- Sandburg's Lincoln (Civil War)
--- Movie 2
--- Movie 3
--- Movie 4
--- Movie 5

-X- The cavalry and Indian story. (The plot revolves around taming the wilderness for white settlers.) Jeremiah Johnson

Re: The Fourth Annual Historical Appreciation Challenge - List Thread

June 1
1. The Hollow Crown: Richard II (2012). Vimeo--One of Shakespeare's most fascinating works, a character study of a weak, foolish king whose arrogance and greed sow his own destruction. The BBC's TV film adaptation is gorgeous to watch, and Ben Whishaw's performance as the foppish king is striking in its honesty.

June 2
2. Blazing Saddles (1974). Blue-Ray--Still a classic.
3. The Court Jester (1956). DVD--One of Danny Kaye's funniest films.

June 10
4. Behind the Burley-Q (2010). TV--Fascinating look at an extinct branch of show business.
