List thread for Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30 2013

presents

The Fourth Annual Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge!!

April 1 - April 30, 2013

100 Movies in 31 Days.

This thread is for lists only.
For discussion, go to the discussion thread here.

The 2012 discussion thread is here

The 2012 list thread is here

The 2011 discussion thread is here. 2011 list thread is here.

The 2010 discussion thread is here. 2010's list thread is HERE.

The Goal is 100 films. These type of films tend to be short, but they also might be a challenge to get through. Your personal goal might be higher or lower, depending on your tolerance for this type of cinema.

A film can only be counted once per list with the exception of riffed/commentaried films (see below).

This challenge is for Movies. Although we are not allowing TV shows, Made for TV Movies are allowed as are Direct to Video features.

We are allowing documentaries on B-Movies, Exploitation and Drive-ins and those involved with the production thereof. These should be features over 40 minutes.. We are also allowing trailer compilations, such as 42nd Street Forever and Something Weird compilations.
Throw a viewing party and show trailers between movies.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, Riff Trax, Cinematic Titanic, etc. are allowed. If there is a second riffed version (for example, MST3K did one, then

Cinematic Titanic did the same movie) you may watch the second and any additional riffed versions for a full credit each, but I encourage you to just

watch another movie, instead.

Commentaries. The old commentary rule is gone. All commentaries count as views.

Films that have been nominated for Oscars are discouraged but not banned. I had originally wanted this to be the only hard rule, but I came across too many exceptions.

Drive-In exception rule: Any film seen in an actual Drive-In during the challenge 2012, regardless of other qualification, counts toward your list.. Please note that it was a Drive-In Movie.

We will go with the Sci-Fi rule on TV Mini-series (one "night" equals an entry), on Serials (we'll go with an hour's worth per entry), provided they actually were theatrical serials. A serial episode is about 15-20 minutes, so an hour's worth counts as an entry. 4-15 minutes ones or 3-20 minute episodes.

There are 3 Wild Cards for non-conforming films.

For fun, keep a running tally of "before they were famous" appearances in your list.

Please number your lists. Also, it is helpful to put a link to your list in your signature. This makes it easier for others to check out your list..

New rule. Please tally your totals including "new views" at the end of the challenge.

For extra fun, try to complete the optional checklist. Also, try to keep a running tally in your lists of "before they were famous" appearances.

Official Checklist: (put in spoiler tags on your list)

For more descriptive definitions checkout http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploitation_film and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-movie

Code:
If a category is listed as "Optional", it does not need to be
filled to "complete" the checklist. There are 10 free spots you may apply to non-Optional categories.

The following lists are Automatic Safe lists. They are not definitive and there might be exceptions therein. Generally, the presence of those on

the lists in an actual creative capacity (that is, more than just a cameo or bit part. For instance, Bruce Campbell appearing in Spider-Man does

not make Spider-Man safe) is enough to make a film safe. Got more? Post them and I'll update the list. Obviously, films not including these

participants are safe, too. Update: I added several new names to the actors list. Some of these actors appeared in actual big budget

Hollywood fare, but most of their career was in B-Movies, then obviously discard the Big Hollywood movies and just watch the B's (For example,

William Shatner. Ignore Star Trek movies but anything else is fair game. Or Patrick Swazye. Ghost is probably not right, but most of his other

films were B-Movies).

Re: List thread for Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30

Time to watch some art!

MARCH 31
1) ANGELS FROM HELL - OK biker flick. Lacks subversive edge of the best of this genre. *

2) MACHETE - Fun grindhouse pastische from Robert Rodriguez born from a fake trailer. Danny Trejo is great as titular bad ass.

APRIL 1
3) CHOPPING MALL - Barbara Crampton and Kelli Maroney are among partiers trapped in shopping mall after hours by killer robots. Surprisingly good. *

APRIL 2
4) THE BIG SCORE - Fred Williamson directs and stars in ho hum police actioner. Good cast is largely wasted in rote, poorly made "thriller". *

APRIL 3
5) PULP FICTION - Still awesome!

6) CRY-BABY - John Waters' juvenile delinquent musical has grown on me over the years. Energetic with good songs and a great cast.

APRIL 4
7) HOT CARS - No nonsense noir with honest husband and father embroiled in car theft ring. Fast paced with good climax. *

APRIL 5
8) EVIL DEAD (2013) - Another unnecessary remake of an iconic horror classic. Good atmosphere, performances and gore with lots of nice call backs to original for die hards. Ending could have been better, but I liked this. *

9) SATAN'S LITTLE HELPER - An interesting idea, but not quite succssful horror film from usually reliable Jeff Lieberman. *

APRIL 6
CINEMA WASTELAND
10) SLUMPER PARTY MASSACRE - I've always loved this slasher classic. Watching with a cast Q & A afterward was friggin' awesome.

APRIL 7
11) THE BOOGEYMAN (1980) - Disjointed nonsense to some. Euro style art house horror to others. Art house! (clap clap) Art house! (clap clap).

APRIL 8
12) REMOTE CONTROL - Aliens use VHS tapes to start an invasion in writer/director Jeff Lieberman's witty ode to 50's sci fi. *

13) TERROR VISION - Colorful, weird and over the top Empire production. Energetic performances with cool, gooey effects.

14) CHROME AND HOT LEATHER - William Smith is good as biker leader trying to keep gang living within the law. A loose cannon in the group complicates things and incurs wrath of military man and friends. Pretty good, but not as edgy as the best of 'em. *

APRIL 9
15) THE VAN - Amiable but boring story of recent high school graduate and his adventures crusing in his (not Chevy) van. *

APRIL 10
16) PECKER - As a huge John Waters fan, I'm not sure how I managed to miss this one all these years. Likable but not really very funny story of young Baltimore photographer suddenly thrust into New York art scene. Breezy and entertaining, with good performances. *

APRIL 11
17) SAVAGE STREETS - Linda Blair kicks ass in Danny Steinman's classic revenge thriller. Delievers everything you'd expect, and perhaps a bit more. Good fun.

APRIL 13
18) SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE II - Wacky sequel defies logic - and so does my love for it. Let's buzz!

19) DRACULA 3D (2012) - One giant praying mantis aside, just plain dull adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic from Dario Argento. Some decent 3D but pretty dreadful. *

APRIL 14
20) WALKING TALL (1973) - A drive-in classic. Joe Don Baker is great in true story of sheriff Bufford Pusser and his fight against organized crime in Tennessee. Intense and suprisingly emotional.

21) PART 2 WALKING TALL - Bo Svenson takes over the role of Bufford Pusser in decent sequel. Lacks grit of original. *

22) FINAL CHAPTER - WALKING TALL - At this point we know how Bufford Pusser's story ends, but finale of series is still interesting. After the release of "Walking Tall", Pusser finds himself an unexpected celebrity and facing criticism for unconventional police methods. Things get a bit meta when he attends movie premier and watches reenactment of pivotal grim moment from his life. *

APRIL 15
23) THIS FILTHY WORLD - John Waters speaks for an hour and a half. Hilarity ensues. *

APRIL 17
24) THE MINI-SKIRT MOB - Rodeo performing motorcycle gang terrorizes former member and new wife in tense, economical thriller. Harry Dean Stanton plays one of bikers. *

APRIL 18
25) KEOMA - Franco Nero stars in surreal, dark spaghetti western from director Enzo Castellari. I loved this. *

APRIL 19
26) VIVA LAS VEGAS - It may be an Elvis movie, but this flick belongs to Ann-Margret.

APRIL 20
27) THE LORDS OF SALEM - Rob Zombie's hallucinogenic witchcraft tale is overflowing with beautiful, if occasionally silly, imagery. Not for everyone but if you're on the film's wacky wavelength (I was), it's a fun trip. *

28) TROLL 2 - It wouldn't be April without a trip to Nilbog. We had lime Kool-Aid and cake with green icing for the proper atmosphere.

APRIL 21
29) EATING RAOUL - I could watch Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov go grocery shopping and it would be delightful.

30) THE PEACE KILLERS - Brutal motorcycle gang terrorizes ex girlfriend of leader and her hippie commune. After hippies set aside pacifist ways and unite with rival gang to engage bikers, film takes unexpected turn as confrontation is not what's expected. Violent and intense. A great biker pic. *

APRL 22
31) THE SEVERED ARM - A clever premise and some cool twists make this stalk 'n slash effort a daffy good time. This was the Code Red DVD with some extraneous scenes edited. I didn't miss them. *

APRIL 24
32) VICE RAID - Mamie Van Doren stars in story of disgraced cop's crusade to bring down crime kingpin. Exactly what you'd expect. *

APRIL 25
33) THE REAL LINDA LOVELANCE (WILDCARD) - Damn, I had no idea how dark LL's life got. *

34) ROCK N ROLL HIGH SCHOOL - Hands down, my favore New World Picture. Everything clicks in joyous, anarchic comedy. Great soundtrack too.

APRIL 26
35) DARKTOWN STRUTTERS - Bizarre, over the top blaxploitation satire written by George Armitage at times seems like a live action Ralph Bakshi cartoon. Impossible to describe, just needs to be seen to be believed. Outragous, fast paced story gets weirder (and better) as it progresses. *

APRIL 27
36) QUADROPHENIA - Director Franc Roddam's cult drama based on classic album by the Who. Gritty, with vivid sense of time and place. *

37) MACON COUNTY LINE - I think if this movie was released today it would be hailed as a twisty, well crafted indie thriller and play in art houses.

APRIL 28
38) GALAXY OF TERROR - Ambitious New World science fiction horror film is a total blast.

39) THE BIG SHOWDOWN - Lee Van Cleef and haunting musial score are best things in decent but unremarkable spaghetti western. *

APRIL 29
40) TOMMY - I've never wanted to be a baked bean so badly in my entire life.

APRIL 30
41) HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD - Hilarious and probably a bit truthful satire of life in a New Worldesque studio. Always a fitting end to the challenge.

THE END
WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN!

Re: List thread for Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30

2010 B-Movie/Exploitation/Drive-in Movie Challenge List - 104
2011 Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge List - 105
2012 Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge List - 100

4/1/13

1) Murder in Harlem (1935) - A black nightwatchman discovers a dead white girl in a chemical factory basement and is subsequently arrested and tried for her murder. Plays a bit like three movies edited into one, but it sorta worked. Not a bad start.

4/2/13

2) Murder on Lenox Avenue (1941) - Bad guy gets kicked out as the leader of Harlem's "Better Business League," then decides that murdering the new leader will somehow set things right. Not bad.
3) Miracle in Harlem (1948) - Rich guy chisels old woman and her family out of their candy business, then he ends up murdered. Pretty decent whodunit with some good musical interludes. I liked it.

4/3/13

4) Son of Ingagi (1940) - Odd little horror/comedy about an old woman/mad scientist (don't see that combo too often) with an apeman (or whatever that thing was supposed to be) living in her basement. After the old woman is murdered, an incompetent police detective is assigned to the case. Goofy as hell, but kind of fun for what it was.
5) Confessions of a Vice Baron (1943) - In this sequel to Smashing the Vice Trust (1937), guy on death row dictates his life of crime to the warden's secretary (which we see illustrated by clips from the previous film and a few other old exploitation movies: Victims of Passion (Race Suicide) (1937), Wages of Sin (1938), Mad Youth (1939), and Souls in Pawn (1940)) This was a pretty good super-cheapy. Made me want to find the three films they used that I haven't seen (at least not in their entirety, because two of them looked awfully familiar). No luck finding them though. First nude scene of this challenge.
6) Hospital of Terror (Nurse Sherri) (1978) - Decided to watch something on the Al Adamson YouTube channel and this was the first one I found that I hadn't watched before. Famous astrologer/mystic/whatever dies in a hospital during an operation and decides to possess a nurse and then start killing people. Almost silly enough to be fun.
7) The Emperor Jones (1933) - Guy named Jones gets a new job, leaves his small town, takes up womanizing and gambling, goes to jail for murder, escapes, and finally ends up as emperor of a small island nation. Larger budget (and from an actual studio) sets it apart from the other race films I've watched, and the anti-hero main character foreshadows blaxploitation films yet to come. Well worth a look, if only for the (almost) one man show in the final act.
8) The Blood of Jesus (1941) - Think Ron Ormond/Estus Pirkle film with an an all-black cast and you're on the right track. After being accidentally shot by her husband, a woman is visited by an angel who takes her to the afterlife, where she visits a nightclub, gets a job at a juke joint, runs into the devil, and eventually encounters a signpost that changes into a talking crucifix. Some really good old-time Gospel music in this one.

4/4/13

9) Drive (1997) - Poor man's Rush Hour. Fleeing from bad guys, The Chairman from Iron Chef America (the Asian martial artist guy) kidnaps Dwayne Wayne (the fast talking Black guy) and forces him to drive them cross-country in a red 1973 Dodge Challenger. Lots of gunplay and chopsocky, but surprisingly little car action for a film called Drive. This one actually turned out to be pretty decent.
10) Mrs. Stone's Thing (1970) - Mrs. Stone wonders why her husband doesn't want to take her along to his boss's "business parties." And why is he too worn out for sex when he gets home? He gets tired of her complaining, and takes her along to the next party, where we get to see a few cute hippie chicks, a couple of disgustingly fat nekkid people, Ed Wood in drag, and whatever other oddness they could film in an afternoon and squeeze onto the screen.

4/5/13

11) The Muthers (1976) - Two female pirates are recruited to infiltrate a coffee plantation that enslaves women. Pretty good Blaxploitation/WIP combo from DPI.
12) Creature of Destruction (1967) - AIP TV remake of The She-Creature directed by Larry Buchanan. Les Tremayne is a mentalist who puts his assistant into a past-life regression trance, turning her into a silly looking rubber suit monster that kills guests at a resort. Not much happening here, but it actually wasn't that bad.

4/6/13

13) It's Alive! (1969) - Another Larry Buchanan AIP TV movie. A couple on a cross-country drive end up imprisoned, along with Tommy Kirk, in a crazy coot's serpentarium where they're to be fed to the rubber suit monster from the last flick. Just not a whole lot happening in this one.
14) The She-Creature (1956) - Hypnotist puts his assistant into a past-life regression trance, turning her into a rubber suit monster that kills people at the beach. Higher budget, better monster, and better effects made this one much better than the cheapo remake.
15) Chloe, Love Is Calling You (1934) - A voodoo practitioner and a girl who may or may not be her biracial daughter return to Louisiana 15 years after they left. The girl falls in love with a white guy. Not a lot happens. Then it ends.
16) The Choppers (1961) - Arch Hall, Jr. and four other boys strip parts off cars. Meanwhile a cop and an insurance investigator try to catch them. Not bad.
17) The Muthers (1968) - A day in the life of a couple of horny housewives and their two horny daughters. Several familiar faces. Lots of T&A. Not a lot of story.

4/7/13

18) The Chinese Connection (1971) - Bruce Lee seeks to avenge his teacher's death. Classic chopsocky flick. My only rewatch so far in this challenge.

4/8/13

19) Sleazy Rider (1972) - After a sheriff harasses a gang of bikers, the gang has an orgy, then they go looking for revenge on the sheriff by attacking him and his family in their home. It was a little surreal seeing Grizzly Adams eating Nilla Wafers and guzzling Coors while he was watching all the raping and screwing going on.
20) Savage Abduction (Cycle Psycho) (1972) -An attorney hires a client to kill his wife. Then the killer decides he enjoys killing and necrophilia, so he blackmails the attorney to acquire a couple of young girls for him. So the attorney hires a few bikers to get the girls. Several familiar faces in this one.

4/9/13

21) Bust Out (Convicts' Women) (1973) - A high school teacher and his wife take four female students on a senior picnic in the woods. Right away, Rene Bond gets naked (she spends most of the film wearing nothing but a pair of red knee-high boots, a couple of gold chains, and false eyelashes). There's some simulated sex. Two escaped convicts (Ric Lutze and another guy) show up. Then there's some volleyball playing, and some more simulated sex.
22) The Big Bust-Out (1972) - English-dubbed European (I think it was German) WIP flick. A group of women convicts on work release at a convent make their escape, along with a nun, then travel across a desert while pursued by prison guards and "white slavers." Not too bad.
23) A Dirty Western (1975) - Written and directed by Joseph F. Robertson, the writer/director of Mrs. Stone's Thing. By this time, he'd apparently moved on from softcore sexploitation flicks, where they went to great pains not to show too much, to explicit hardcore where they went to great pains to show everything. Three convicts escape from prison with a sheriff and his two-man posse far behind. They happen upon a ranch occupied by a woman and her three nekkid daughters, and proceed to rape, kidnap, and rape some more. Then there's some horse riding. And a little more rape. And some more horse riding. Then some more raping. I thought a couple of the horse riding scenes did a pretty good job of showing the wide-open spaces, so I looked up the credited cinematographer, Robert Rubin, and found that he was an Assistant Director on Dirty Harry and The Last Picture Show.
24) The Arena (1973) - Pam Grier and Margaret Markov are slaves in ancient Rome who are forced to fight as gladiators. This could've been a good flick if the fight scenes had been better choreographed/performed/photographed. I'm pretty sure I hadn't seen this one before (if I had, it was a long, long time back), although parts of it seemed familiar (I think I probably just remembered the scenes from the trailer), so I'm counting it as a FTV.

4/10/13

25) 3 Dev Adam (Three Giant Men) (1973) - Santo , Captain America, and Julia go to Istanbul to track down a counterfeiter/art thief/murderer called "Spider" who wears a green and red Spider-Man inspired costume. It took me three tries to make it through this one.

4/11/13

26) Super Spook (1974) - What a giant steaming pile of crap this was. An old woman running numbers is mugged, and her daughter hires "Super Spook" to bring the mugger to justice.
27) Mondo Cane (1962) - The film that started the "Mondo" flick fad. Has the usual stuff: sex, death, cruelty to animals, people acting strangely. Colorful and well shot. Nominated for an Oscar for "Best Music, Original Song."
28) Mondo Cane 2 (1963) - More of the same.

4/12/13

29) Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A. (1946) - Lots of bad acting on display in this one. After two-timing her boyfriend, stripper Gertie LaRue leaves Harlem and goes to do a show at an island resort.
30) Pacific Banana (1980) - Australian sex comedy about a pair of pilots working in the South Pacific. Decent amount of nudity. Not much comedy. I didn't think I'd watched this one before, but enough of it was familiar that I decided I must've seen it before on cable. So that's the second rewatch of this challenge.

4/13/13

31) Suckula (1973) - Buck Flower plays a news anchor/narrator who introduces a few vampire sex scenes and fake commercials. He also appears (in drag) as an on-the-scene reporter.
32) Spermula (1976) - The planet Spermula is close to destruction, so a few Spermulites are given human form and sent to Earth to drain men so they can no longer reproduce so the aliens can take over. Udo Kier plays an alien hermaphrodite. What a huge, stinking pile of merde this was. (I watched the English-dubbed version, but I doubt the original French version was any better.)
33) Juan de los Muertos (Juan of the Dead) (2011) - When zombies infest Cuba, a group of criminals starts an exterminating business. Didn't live up to all the hype, but it was pretty darn good. (I'll wildcard this one if anyone objects to its inclusion.)
34) Dawna the Dead (Dawna of the Dead) (2010) - Man, did this suck. A couple of women go to a cemetery. They play with a ouija board, then one sneaks off to play with herself, then zombies dig their way out of their graves and the raping starts. Then some more people show up at the cemetery and there's some more raping, and a little gore. The women in this weren't especially attractive and the zombie makeup (when they became zombies) didn't help any.

4/14/13

35) Return of the Dragon (1972) - Bruce Lee goes to Rome to help a young lady's uncle fight off the gangsters who want to buy his restaurant. Classic chopsocky flick with final battle between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the Roman Coliseum. My third rewatch for this challenge.

4/15/13

36) Bottoms Up Bavarian Style (1977) - German sex comedy about a couple of spies chasing after a scientist who has invented a formula for turning bullshit into gasoline. Lots of attractive naked frauleins. Not a whole lot of comedy. The English dub on this seems like it's maybe 50% translation & 50% riff.

4/16/13

37) The Bonnie Parker Story (1958) - AIP gangster flick. After Bonnie Parker hooks up with Guy Darrow (and later, Guy's brother Chuck and his girlfriend), they start holding up gas stations and general stores. After a while they break Bonnie's husband out of jail and start robbing banks and armored cars. I don't know why they changed Clyde's name and gave Bonnie a husband, but it was a pretty good flick.
38) Cry Tough (1959) - John Saxon plays a young Puerto Rican just out of prison who winds up getting mixed up with crooks again and rising up through the criminal ranks. This one was full of familiar character actors.
39) Hollywood Round-Up (1937) - Columbia B picture about making B pictures. A cowboy star and his stand-in/stuntman are both interested in the star's new costar, but she likes the stuntman. Shemp Howard plays the assistant director of the film-within-the-film.
40) Devil Girl from Mars (1954) - Flying saucer lands near an inn in Scotland. Alien chick and her goofy-looking giant robot emerge from the ship looking for men to repopulate Mars. A good bit of scenery chewing going on in this one.

4/17/13

41) The Giant Claw (1957) - Planes are attacked by an "overgrown buzzard" from outer space. Lots of stock footage, plus one of the goofiest monsters ever put on film. I'd seen this one long ago on cable. Entertaining as heck.
42) Daikaijû Gamera (Gamera, The Giant Monster) (1965) - Fire eating, fire-breathing, flying turtle attacks Japan. I'd seen the Americanized version before, so I watched the original version last night (I'll still count it as a rewatch). Ugh. Even subtitled that little "I like turtles" kid was irritating as fuck.
43) Black Samson (1974) - Bar owner with a pet lion tries to keep drug dealers out of his neighborhood. Drive-In stalwart William Smith played the bad guy. Okay film.
44) Three the Hard Way (1974) - Dr. Shrinker is going to release a poison that only kills "black folks" into the water supplies of D.C., Detroit, and L.A., and it's up to Jim Brown, Fred Williamson, and Jim Kelly to stop his plans. Alex Rocco pops up a couple times as a police detective. This one wasn't bad.
45) The Bronze Buckaroo (1939) - Group of cowboys go to a friend's ranch only to find he's missing. Meanwhile a neighboring rancher is trying to get the friend's sister to sell the ranch. Kind of surprised to see Spencer Williams playing a bad guy in this.

4/18/13

46) Supersonic Man (1979) - English-dubbed Spanish Superman rip-off. An alien is sent to earth to battle Cameron Mitchell. Almost silly enough to be fun.
47) Fugitive Girls (Five Loose Women) (1974) - Directed by Stephen C. Apostolof (the director of Orgy of the Dead) and co-written by Ed Wood. After her boyfriend robs a liquor store, an innocent girl is sent to a summer camp-like women's correctional facility. Later, she, Rene Bond, and three other chicks escape. Ed Wood plays a couple of characters in this one (and does a pretty good job). I was hoping he and Rene Bond would share a scene, but it wasn't to be.
48) The Beach Bunnies (1976) - Another Apostolof & Wood film. Looking for a scoop, a magazine editor and three of her friends go on vacation at a beach side hotel where a movie star is staying.
49) The Godson (1971) - A young gangster tries to work his way up in the organization. There was maybe ten minutes of story in this flick. The other hour and 20 minutes was simulated sex scenes. Uschi Digard played a hooker.
50) Below the Belt (1971) - Nutty fight manager spends most of the film attacking women and having pretend sex with them. This flick is an embarrassment of riches: it was written and directed by Bethel Buckalew; Buck Flower has a major role as a retired boxer; Rene Bond (pre-implants!) and Uschi Digard are both in it (and they both have speaking roles, so they're not just scenery).
51) Loose Screws (1985) - Canadian teen sex comedy. Borrows heavily from other similar films. I'd seen it a few times on cable back in the '80s, so it had some nostalgic appeal.

4/19/13

52) The Jail: The Women's Hell (2006) - Directed by Bruno Mattei. WIP flick with the usual stuff: whippings, showers, snakes. Several women escape the prison and are hunted for sport.
53) Scream in the Night (1935) - Detectives track jewel robber. Lon Chaney, Jr. plays two parts; a detective and a bar owner.

4/20/13

54) Juke Joint (1947) - Spencer Williams and another guy show up in town and pretend to be from Hollywood and help a girl win a beauty contest in exchange for free room and board.

4/21/13

55) Reet, Petite, and Gone (1947) - Old millionaire dies, leaving his son (played by Louis Jordan) his fortune if he marries a woman who just happens (thanks to the old man's shyster lawyer) to have the exact same measurements as the lawyer's secretary. The whole thing is just an excuse to show a bunch of scantily clad chicks between (and during) songs by Louis Jordan and his band. Some good music in this one.
56) Boy! What a Girl (1946) - A couple of musicians looking to get a backer for a show get a neighbor (Tim Moore) to pose as a wealthy woman interested in financing the show. After all the Spencer Williams flicks I've seen this month, I guess its only right that I watch one with "The Kingfish."
57) TNT Jackson (1974) - Blaxploitation/chopsocky combo. Female martial artist goes to Hong Kong to try to find out what happened to her brother. I think this was the third Jeannie Bell flick I've seen this month. Dick Miller is listed as a writer. Seen this one before. Okay, but nothing special.

4/22/13

58) Firecracker (1981) - Female martial artist goes to Hong Kong to try to find out what happened to her sister. Might as well call it a remake of TNT Jackson. They were both directed by the same guy (Cirio H. Santiago) and written by the same guy (Ken Metcalfe). They even have scenes and dialogue in common. First Vic Diaz sighting this month. Okay, but nothing special.
59) Bad Ass (2011) - A movie based on a YouTube video. Danny Trejo plays an old guy who becomes famous for beating up a couple guys on a bus. Then when he doesn't think the cops are doing enough to investigate a friend's murder, he decides to bring the killers to justice on his own.
60) Ebony Ivory & Jade (She Devils in Chains) (1976)- My fourth Cirio Santiago flick this month. A group of girls on a track team (Colleen Camp, Rosanne Katon, and some other chicks) are kidnapped and held for ransom. HowWHY do you make a drive-in movie about chicks getting kidnapped without any nudity?
61) Too Hot to Handle (1976) - Cheri Caffaro (the chick from the Ginger trilogy) plays a hitwoman killing bad guys. Vic Diaz plays a cop in this one (the only time I remember seeing him play a good guy).

4/23/13

62) The Haunted World of Edward D. Wood, Jr. (1995) - Documentary about Ed Wood. Why no Kathy Wood? (I know she does interviews, because I watched one she did the night before I watched this.)
63) Inside Deep Throat (2005) - Documentary about Deep Throat.

4/24/13

64) The Defilers (1965) - A couple of guys "looking for kicks" kidnap a woman and keep her as a sex slave. Sleazy roughie written by Dave Friedman.

4/25/13

65) Scum of the Earth (1963) - Teenage girl gets mixed up with pornographers. Written and directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis. After seeing the excerpted pieces in the SWV DVD intro a hundred or so times, I finally got to see the "you're damaged merchandise and this is a fire sale" speech in its entirety, and it's even better in context.
66) The Pick-Up (1969) - Directed by Lee Frost, who also directed The Defilers. Two guys carrying a load of cash for the mob encounter two chicks having car trouble. They pick them up and end up at a motel. Then the chicks steal the money and the guys have to chase them down and get the money back before the mobsters kill them. Dave Friedman and Bob Cresse play the two mob bosses. This one was pretty good.
67) The Goddaughter (1972) - After their Godfather is killed, his mob has to find a blood relative to take his place or be taken over by the other mobs. They find an illegitimate daughter in Italy, who happens to be a nun, to take his place. Some Godfather parody with a little Nunsploitation thrown in (when the nun is raped and crucified by the other Godfathers). Uschi plays one of the women mobsters/assassins. Nothing special, but I did get a laugh hearing Uschi say "Squeeze my beeg fucking teet."
68) Hey! There's Naked Bodies on My TV! (1978) - Janitor watching TV late at night sees R-rated parodies of Welcome Back, Kotter, Barney Miller, and Happy Days.
69) KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978) - Inventor goes nuts and gets fired from his job in an amusement park the same day that KISS is appearing in concert in the parking lot. It's up to the members of KISS to stop the inventor's killer robots, sing a few songs, and try not to look too embarrassed. Goofy fun.
70) Bad Girls Go to Hell (1965) -

Re: List thread for Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30

2013 Drive-In/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge

List is final. Did not complete checklist.

Total = 60, FTV = 60 (100%)

By format: DVD = 58 VHS = 1 Streaming (Netflix) = 1

By the decades:
1930=1, 1940=3, 1950=5, 1960=12, 1970=20, 1980=6, 1990=8, 2000=4
one commentary not included in decade count

* = first time viewing

April 03
01. The Louisiana Hussy (1959)* (Sinister Cinema)
A beautiful woman who knows how to use her charms comes between two brothers and threatens their moderately successful Fish Furs & Moss business. Nice swampy setting with lots of outdoor location shots. No gators but we do get to see some moss harvesting. Fairly entertaining movie with barely acceptable acting really slows down during a long flashback about hussy's recent past. Almost no nudity but some half clothed groping which often leads to a happy little bell like tune and some serious sheet clenching. Whew! Betty Lynn who later played Barney Fife's girl Thelma Lou plays the wife of one of the brothers. Directed by Lee Sholem, best know to me as the director of many of the best shows of the first season of The Adventures of Superman. 4/10

April 04
02. She Killed in Ecstasy (1971)*
A beautiful young woman takes revenge on the doctors who condemned her husband's work because of his experiments on human embryos. Strangely paced, almost languid at times yet with a jazzy score that doesn't always seem to fit. There is also some really interesting architecture on display. I rarely felt much suspense or tension but the overall oddness of the film, a reasonable amount of nudity, and just a bit of nastiness made for an enjoyable viewing experience. I've only seen a few other Franco films so I don't know if this one is typical or not. 6/10

April 06
03. Ninja vs Ninja (1987)* (Tai Seng Ninja Six 6-DVD Box Set)
The 'Ninja Syndicate' is after an audio tape (why??) and are opposed by the local police, the CIA, a mysterious white ninja (so mysterious WE never find out who he is!), and perhaps a traitor in their own ranks. I always like to watch the poorly dubbed, usually cropped kung-fu movies for this challenge and this is one of the worst. The plot makes little sense, some major characters and events are never explained, and the end totally sucks. This may be due to the dub script writer or this may have been severely cut. I suspect cuts since the run time on the box is a good 25 minutes longer than the film really runs and the plot description on the box could possibly be the original form of what we get here. On the plus side, there are some OK fights, the 'ninja magic' is kind of neat if standard (multiplying, burrowing underground, smoky teleportation, etc.), and it's short. 2/10
04. Desperate Living (1977)*
Two women on the run for murder end up in Mortville, a shanty town ruled over by a despotic queen. A John Waters film so a brief description doesn't begin to do it justice. Gross, silly, boisterous, full of nudity and sexual situations but rarely erotic, its almost like a fever dream fairy tale populated by street people, lesbians, and men in leather. Although often too loud for my taste and too often indulging in outrageousness for it's own sake, it is still an interesting watch. Very low budget but also very creative in many ways. 5/10

April 07
05. Commentary for Desperate Living with director John Waters and star Liz Renay
OK but not great commentary which most to the time seems like two separate commentaries edited together. Of the two Waters is the more interesting although Renay is OK when she focuses on the film. Some good stories about low budget film making.
06. Mudhoney ... Leaves a Taste of Evil (1965)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
A ex-con on his way to California gets a job on a farm in Spooner, MO and runs afoul of the alcoholic, sadistic husband of the owner's niece. An engrossing tale of rural sleaze, the abuse of religion, and the power of a mob mentality. Hal Hopper is very good as the husband and the rest of the cast is at least adequate. Decent story (based on a novel) with an exciting finish. Some nudity and some very nice directorial flourishes. 7/10

April 08
07. The Ark of the Sun God (1984)* VHS
A master thief is hired to open the booby trapped door to the tomb of Gilgamesh which contains a gold and emerald scepter. An Arab prince is also after the treasure in order to gain political power. Directed by Antonio Margheriti and staring David Warbeck, the title suggest an Indian Jones rip-off and the last part is but the first sixty percent or so feels much more like James Bond with car chases (using miniatures!), kidnapping, gun fights and the like. The tomb has an elaborate set of traps and the climax is exciting but goes on a bit too long. While there are a few neat parts and the cast is pretty good, the whole thing comes out just a bit flat. And there is not an ark in the entire movie. 5/10

April 09
08. Slaughter (1972)*
An ex-Green Beret seeking the killer of his parents is sent to South America by a U.S. Treasury agent, who promises he will find the hit man there. OK action flick. I liked Jim Brown as Slaughter and Stella Stevens was voluptuous but the guy who played one of the main baddies was just awful, seeming more like a parody of all the mafia kingpins you've even seen. This is the only film IMDB has listed for this guy and I can see why. The jazzy score was good but not nearly as funky as I expected (although Slaughter gets his own theme song by Billy Preston). Actually the whole movie is a bit more Bond than blaxploitation. Frequent well done action scenes and lots of Stella Stevens do keep you interested though. 6/10

April 10
09. Black Emanuelle White Emanuelle (1976)*
(Black) Emanuelle, the world's most famous model, and her total dick of a boy friend/photographer visit the home of a wealthy woman in Egypt who is celebrating the return of her daughter Laure (White Emanuelle). Also visiting is a wandering holy man who likes to have his vital forces extracted by the mother when the sun rises. Stuff happens, much of it without clothing. The world of Emanuelle continues to confound me. This. like the other Emanuelle movies I've seen, is pretentious, new agey, full of unappealing personalities, and often tedious. The admittedly lovely women, often nude, can only go so far to offset this. The end is pretty darned bizarre which is why the film scored as high as it did. 3/10

April 11
10. Slaughter's Big Rip-Off (1973)*
After an attempt on his life kills a couple of his friends, ex-Green Beret Slaughter knows that the mob is out for revenge and he needs to strike back. Feels more like blaxploitation than the first film with an urban setting and a funkier soundtrack (by James Brown and Fred Wesley). The big baddie is played by Ed McMahon who is surprisingly OK in the role and miles ahead of the guy in the first film. The rest of the cast is fine and Jim Brown gets to talk more and even emote a little. Despite all this, the movie just isn't as entertaining as the first one. There seem to be fewer action sequences and the story sometimes drags in between them. Not a bad movie at all but not outstanding either. 5/10

April 12
11. Nude on the Moon (1961)*
Two scientists build a spaceship and go to the moon where they find a tropical paradise and lots of boobs. This actually has a plot (at least for the first 30 minutes or so), the typical 1950's first rocket to the moon plot with cheesy lab scenes, an even cheesier model rocket and the clever use of a commercial airliner cockpit for the interior of the spaceship. The space suits look like something out of a Colombia serial. On the moon they find a civilization made up most of women who go around in uncomfortable looking short shorts and head bands with antenna on them and who do not speak, but communicate telepathically. A lot of pictures an notes are taken as the astronauts observe the moon creatures in various poses and activities until the oxygen runs low and they have to return to Earth. There's also a romantic subplot with the workaholic rocket scientist. Not a good movie at all but at least it wasn't boring, just silly and that's worth an extra point. 5/10

April 13
12. Son of Samson (1960)* (Retromedia War-Gods Collection)
Egypt is suffering under the oppression of the Persian Empire which controls the queen and the pharaoh's top adviser. Only the son of Samson can lead the people to overthrow the tyrants! Above average sword and sandal epic. The Egyptian setting is really neat and Mark Forest plays a good hero with a bit more on the ball than some others. There are plenty of feats of strength, most involving rocks, and a good large scale melee at the end. The story is pretty good with only a couple of gaps and the ladies are lovely. 6/10
13. The Son of Cleopatra (1964)* (Retromedia War-Gods Collection)
The mysterious El Kabir leads the freedom loving desert tribes of Egypt against the oppression of a corrupt Roman governor. Mark Damon is a pleasant hero but without any extraordinary strength, just superb fighting skills. The action consists mainly of large scale battles and political machinations. The story drags in spots, often due to romantic intrigue. 5/10
14. Santo vs The Vampire Women (1962)*
Santo must save the daughter of a friend from a horrible 200 year old curse. Probably the best and most famous of the Santo films. It starts out quite atmospheric as we meet the vampire women, as well done as in many non-wrestling Mexican horror films. The two wrestling bouts are entertaining, with the second being somewhat relevant to the plot. The cast is all B-movie adequate and the story moves along nicely. I found this very enjoyable. 7/10
15. Cyborg (1989)*
A knife-for-hire wants revenge on the pirate who killed his loved ones and has also captured a cyborg which has information critical to finding the cure for a terrible plague. It sounds complicated but basically its just one long chase with lots of fighting, screaming, yelling, grunting, and groaning. Pretty entertaining in a dumb kind of way except for the detailed flashbacks explaining why the hero has a mad on which really slow things down. Seriously, we got it the first time. A few unintentional laughs liven things up. 5/10
16. The Madmen of Mandoras (1963)* (BCI Drive-In Cult Classics Vol. 2)
A scientist who has developed a cure for the world's most deadly nerve gas is kidnapped and his daughter and son-in-law try to track him down. The lead is one of the most inept heroes ever. Luckily he is up against some of the most incompetent Nazis ever. The wife is annoying, her teenaged sister even more so and the whole thing bounced between domestic comedy and spy thriller. Nestor Pavia is OK but the whole thing is just kind of flat. The expressions on Hitler's head are often good for a laugh. 4/10

April 14
17. Blood Red Planet (2000)* (Brentwood Galaxy of Terror 4 Movie Set)
A planetoid suddenly appears orbiting Mars and simultaneously natural disasters begin to wreak havoc on Earth. A spaceship sent to investigate is destroyed by saucer like craft. Stupid lines spoken by mostly lame actors and a plot that includes many sf cliches from the 60's on. Who knew that space expeditions could be equipped from your local Home Depot and Best Buy stores? There are some laughs but more often stunned disbelief. Still there are a couple of good ideas in this mess and the creature design, if not the execution, is pretty good. My first Polonia brothers film. I will see more. 3/10
18. Blaze Starr Goes Nudist (1962)*
Overworked and exhausted actress Blaze Starr starts going to a nudist colony in order to relax. What little plot there is concerns Blaze's conflict with her boyfriend/manager about her weekend absences. Blaze never does seem to relax though, she's always fidgeting or posing -- a swim means bouncing up and down at the edge of the pool. Nude archery, volleyball, picnics, strawberry picking, chess and even sit down dancing are all on display. Not as good as Nude on the Moon because there are no spaceships, this is still a strangely pleasant movie to sit through. 4/10
19. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)* (The Russ Meyer Collection R2)
Three tough go go dancers go after a bitter old man's fortune. Hot women, fast cars, brutal violence, its all exploitation gold. Engrossing story, full of twisted characters uses the desert setting well and deals with greed, the love of power, and sex as power. Stuart Lancaster as the old man and Tura Santana are both particularly good in their roles. I think Mudhoney is a slightly better movie but this is also a must see. 7/10
20. Head of the Family (1996)* (Full Moon The Charles Band DVD Collection Vol. 1)
A sly country retailer starts blackmailing a mysterious local family made up of genetic misfits. Cheesy, lighthearted, and fun with a clever premise. The acting is adequate for the most part and the makeup effects are OK. No big laughs but frequent nudity adds spice. 5/10

April 15
21. Switchblade Sisters (1975)* Streaming
The newest member of a girl gang, the Dagger Debs, unwittingly causes friction within the group and also between the leader and her gang member boyfriend. The lead actress Robbie Lee is totally unconvincing as the tough as nails leader of the Debs. Her very youthful appearance and voice don't help but the real problem is lack of acting ability. The rest of the gang are OK but their biggest rivals, a gang hiding behind a youth club front, likes to hang out Friday nights at the Roller Rink. Huh? Director Jack Hill keeps things moving along and there are some good action bits but overall this is nothing special. 5/10

April 16
22. Brain of Blood (1971)* (Image The Blood Island Vacation)
A doctor transplants the brain of the ruler of a middle eastern country into the body of a simple minded giant with a horribly scarred face. Movie starts OK with a slow zoom into a picture of the Taj Mahal and has some good cheesy laughs. But after the admittedly icky and entertaining brain surgery the film slows to a boring crawl with a totally un-scary trip through a random dungeon and an ambling kind of chase through the woods. B-movie stars Kent Taylor, Reed Hadley, and Grant Williams do creditable jobs but they can't save a script that runs out of good ideas way too soon. According to the notes, a followup to the Blood Island movies, this one lacks the energy that Eddie Romero brought to those films. 3/10

April 17
23. Shadowzone (1990)* (Full Moon Classics Volume One)
A small group of people are trapped in an underground research facility along with a murderous creature from another dimension that can change its size and shape. Very good monster on the loose movie with adequate acting and a pretty cool looking monster. It does wander into idiot plot territory for a while but I really liked the ending. 6/10

April 18
24. Vanishing Point (1971)*
A car courier tries to make it from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He fails but attracts the attention of law enforcement in several states and becomes something of a hero to the counterculture. I watched the slightly longer UK version. An unusual movie, there aren't that many elaborate car stunts, the chases and traps usually end up with someone going off the road, but there is a lot of hard, fast driving which along with the vistas of desert landscape sometimes results in a dream-like quality. Various aspects of the counterculture are represented by quirky characters met along the way. We find out a little about the driver, Kowalski, but the motivations for major events remain unclear. A captivating film and one I might have had much stronger feelings for had I seen it for the first time back in the 70's. 7/10

25. Roadgames (1981)* (Oz-Ploitation Boxset Vol. 1 R4)
A truck driver, on a long haul across Australia, begins to suspect the driver of a green van is a serial killer. Not a action/chase movie as I was expecting but more of a Hitchcockian suspense film set on a highway. Perhaps due to incorrect expectations I had trouble getting into the story. The driver was just too charmingly quirky for his own good, as was demonstrated over and over again. I also found myself impatient during the first part of the film as some scenes seemed to go on forever, long after the point was made. However, the last 20-30 minutes were good and there was a nice sense of strangeness established by the Australian landscape and encounters with the same fellow travelers throughout the trip. 4/10

April 20
26. Moving Violations (1976)* (Action-Packed Double Feature)
Deep in the heart of Pigville, a drifter and a local girl witness the local sheriff shot one of his deputies. Car chases ensue. Our heroes are none too bright. Fortunately the law offices after them seem totally brain dead. Car chase scenes are OK, but get repetitive after a while. The story often lacks logic but is entertaining and an unexpected turn of events near the end really saves the film. 6/10
27. Fast Company (1979)* (Blue Underground Midnight Movies Car Crash Double Feature)
A company sponsored race car team facing increasing demands from the company agent while just trying to win races. Very entertaining movie, well filmed and directed with lots of exciting drag racing scenes and plenty of personal drama. Good cast but John Saxon is outstanding as the slimy corporate agent. 7/10
28. Murdercycle (1999)*
Three marines accompany a CIA agent and two scientists on a top secret mission. At first this seemed like just another small military unit vs powerful alien killer and it is but there are several neat touches that keep it interesting. All of the characters are named after comic book creators, most artists and mostly Marvel. 6/10
29. Preylien: Alien Predators (2004)* (Brentwood Galaxy of Terror 4 Movie Set)
A spaceship full of creatures from across the universe crashes on Earth and the monsters escape. More awfulness from the Polonia studio. I hoped that the creature designs would be interesting, and two were (kind of) but poorly executed. They reused the monster from Blood Red Planet and the fourth was a guy in a gorilla suit, red vest and fright mask. Very disappointing. The acting was bad but the worst part was the boredom. Way too much walking, running. and scrambling around in the woods. 2/10

April 21
30. The Brute and the Beast (1966)*
A wanderer is summoned back home and finds his hometown is owned by a rich man and his sadistic son. Intense, satisfying story well acted and directed. Not wall to wall action but what's there is well done and there's a nice sense of mystery and unease established early on. 7/10
31. Conquest (1983)*
In a savage world of haze, boobs, and gore, a young prince(?) from a more civilized land searches for evil to conquer (I think. Motivations are unclear in this picture.). A dark, grim fantasy world full of beastmen, cave dwellers, and demon things is an interesting take on the sword and sorcery genre. The constantly soft picture and leisurely pacing does result in the mind wandering a bit although an unexpected turn of events near the end keeps things interesting. 4/10
32. 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983)* (Media Blasters Post Apocalyptic Triple Feature)
Twenty years after the nuclear holocaust three men are sent to find the last fertile woman who is somewhere is New York City, now controlled by the evil Eurak Empire. Very entertaining, good use of industrial type settings to represent a ruined NYC, underground bases, etc. Also some decent miniature work helps set the stage. Much of the film is one chase after another but they move along well and have a variety of settings. Quirky characters, OK acting, good stunts. 6/10
33. The Italian Connection (1972)* (Raro Vidoe Fernando Di Leo Crime Collection)
A pimp finds himself being hunted by the mob but he has no idea why they are after him. Excellent gritty crime drama, well acted and well paced with just the right amount of action. Goes in a totally different direction from what I expected from the beginning of the movie. 8/10

April 22
An Albert Pyun double feature
34. The Wrecking Crew (2000)*
The Wrecking Crew is a paramilitary outfit, possibly made up of ex-gang members, who are called on by police to wipe out gangs which have become too much for law enforcement to tackle. This week, Detroit. There's not really much plot to this movie and its all set up during the first fifteen minutes or so. This is followed by a stylish but long gunfight staged by John Woo fans. Then there's just a little more plot, more gun fights, and a fiery finish. Ice-T poses a lot and looks cool. The soundtrack is all rap music which I didn't care for that much. At least I was never bored. 4/10
35. Dollman (1991)* (Full Moon The Dollman/Demonic Toys Boxset)
A hard bitten policeman from another planet finds himself on Earth, in the South Bronx, where he is only a foot tall compared to human beings. The small size is not really used to great effect and except for a few scenes you never really get a sense of living in a world of giants. Typical gang opponents except for the dimensional bomb of course. The acting is OK with Tim Thomerson pretty solid as the hero. Fun. I liked the floating head guy. Good but not great. 5/10

April 23
36. Portland Expose (1957)* (VCI Forgotten Noir Collectors Set Series One)
A powerful new mob is moving into Portland and a bar owner they're shaking down becomes an informant for a citizens' committee. Funding for the mob may be coming from corrupt union officials since an honest union leader is head of the committee. OK, good acting but predictable plot. Frank Gorshin and Joe Flynn (McHale's Navy) have small but important roles. 5/10

April 24
37. Bowanga Bowanga: White Sirens of Africa (1951)* (aka Wild Women) (SWV Primitive Triple Feature)
A small safari in Africa is captured by a tribe of white women wearing animal skin bikinis. The queen wants to add the strongest one to her collection of husbands but some of her subjects object. Kind of a muddle with some poorly done fights and bad acting. Drags a bit. Stars the very first live action Batman, Lewis Wilson. 4/10
38. Wild Women of Wongo (1958)* (SWV Primitive Triple Feature)
The hormone filled teenage girls of the Wongo tribe are hot for the muscle bound oafs of the Goona tribe, but will the vicious but clumsy ape-men destroy them all? Pretty much a dumb teen comedy set in the jungle but without much comedy. A colorful parrot squawks and talks providing kind of a solo Greek chorus to the happenings. Mildly amusing at times but mostly pretty damn stupid. 3/10
39. Virgin Sacrifice (1959)* (SWV Primitive Triple Feature)
In the jungles of Central America, members of a tribe that practices human sacrifice capture a young woman who's a friend of a hunter who killed the tribe's sacred jaguar. The hunter takes off in pursuit. Actually pretty good -- basically a chase through the jungle with some clever tricks and traps set to stop the hunter. Moves along well and even generates some suspense at times. Below par acting. 5/10
including trailers (I must see I Married A Savage someday) and nudie short Forbidden Daughters (1927!)

April 25
40. Creature of Destruction (1967)* (Retromedia Sci-Fi Trash-o-rama)
A hypnotist who studies past live regressions begins to correctly predict a series of grisly murders at a lake side resort where he is performing. A made for TV color remake of The She Creature. The monster is silly and it's shown too early and too often, but with a little imagination I think it looks OK. There is some genuine tension and a nice eerie atmosphere established early on which unfortunately doesn't last too long. Les Tremayne, as the hypnotist, adds some class and most of the rest of the cast are OK. One of the better Larry Buchanan remakes that I've seen. 4/10
41. UFO: Target Earth (1974)* (Retromedia Sci-Fi Trash-o-rama)
A university researcher overhears a telephone call which causes him to begin investigating UFOs. This happens in the first couple of minutes. For the next 75 minutes or so, nothing makes any sense. Dialog often consists of random words strung together. There are some strange occurrences but you feel like nothing is happening. I kept watching hoping that something, anything would begin to make sense. Finally, when a hint of an explanation is offered in the last few minutes (followed by a bargain basement light show) it is so mind-boggling stupid that I wanted to break something. I have never before felt the almost physical pain I experienced while watching this movie. I now know what "deep hurting" really means. 1/10
including UFO documentary short The Flying Saucer Mystery (1952?) and three toy commercials from the days when they really could put an eye out!
42. Tribulation (2000)*
A detective goes into a coma before The Rapture. When he awakes millions have vanished, including his sister, and the anti-Christ is on the verge of taking control of all of humanity. Third in the series produced by the Jack van Impe ministries, this one features Gary Busey, Howie Mandel, and Margot Kidder. Again, a well done, exciting movie. To my surprise I've enjoyed all of this series and look forward to seeing the fourth and last one during next year's challenge. 6/10

April 26
43. Malibu High (1979)* (BCI Drive-In Cult Classics)
High school senior Kim, with a bad attitude and abrasive personality, decides to use her body to improve her grades and pick up some cash. Given the title I was expecting a teen sex comedy, not this sleazy bit of nastiness. Lots of bare breasts and tame sex scenes which became tedious after a while. Acting was below average, especially the lead. 4/10
44. Cindy and Donna (1970)* (BCI Drive-In Cult Classics)
Pity 17 year old Cindy; her mother is an alcoholic, her father likes hookers better than being home, her older step-sister, Donna, is a nymphomaniac, her best friend keeps trying to get Cindy laid, and poor Cindy just doesn't get this whole sex thing. Lots of nudity and almost softcore sex scenes. What plot there is moves slowly. The end, while shocking, is totally unsatisfying and bodes ill for Cindy's future sexual happiness. 4/10

April 27
45. Indecent Desires (1968)* (SWV Doris Wishman Double Feature)
A creepy guy who likes to rummage through trash finds a doll and then sees a woman on the street who reminds him of the doll. A mystic connection is made and the woman feels whatever the guy does to the doll! I bet you can see where this is going. Novel idea and and the actor playing creepy guy is pretty good but the overall pacing is awful. Lots of bare breasts and dressing and undressing scenes. 3/10
46. My Brother's Wife (1966)* (SWV Doris Wishman Double Feature)
A scumbag seduces his older brother's affection starved wife while carrying on with an old flame. Very sleazy, not many bare breasts but lots of prancing around in undies or sexy outfits. Also lots of shots of feet or even entire legs walking. At one point I almost cared about the conflict between the two brothers. Mercifully short. 3/10
including The Doris Wishman Trailer Show (15 trailers!) plus two nudie shorts The Room Mates and Music to Strip By. Yowsah!
47. Deathsport (1978)*
In a post-apocalyptic future the mad ruler of a city state wants to prove that his Death Machines can make anyone more powerful than the mystically powered Ranger Guides. This excuse for a plot allows lots of motorcycle action, explosions (many seem to occur for no reason at all but are cool) and general mayhem. David Carradine is stoic, Claudia Jennings is lovely and Richard Lynch is evil. Fun and satisfying if predictable. 6/10
48. Brute Corps (1971)*
In Mexico two hitchhikers meet up with a band of American mercenaries waiting for more men to arrive. One of the men takes a shine to the female hitchhiker, trouble follows. Nasty but pretty absorbing. 5/10
49. Terminal Island (1973)*
After the death penalty is declared illegal, California begins to exile those convicted of first-degree murder to a remote island, which is controlled by a sadistic psycho who is opposed by a small band who have escaped his influence. Pretty good action movie, not too sleazy. 6/10
50. Feeders (1996)*
Two guys on a road trip through Pennsylvania run into UFO's and killer aliens. Not that good of a movie but the best of the three Polonia Brothers films I've seen. The acting is often tolerable, there is a plot, and there are moments that are almost suspenseful or exciting. The pacing still leaves much to be desired and it would have helped a lot if the aliens hadn't looked so ... not alive and moved as if they were just falling over. 4/10

April 28
51. Duke of the Navy (1942)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection PRC Vol. 7)
A sailor, who shares the same last name as a wealthy family but nothing else, runs into a con man with a treasure map. A pleasant trifle starring Ralph Byrd (Dick Tracy) who turns out to be pretty good with light comedy. 5/10
52. The Missing Corpse (1945)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection PRC Vol. 7)
A shady newspaper publisher is murdered and his body ends up in a rival's car trunk. Comedy mystery of the "Now you see the body, now you don't" type is almost amusing at times. Not really my cup of tea but a good cast helps. 5/10
53. Blond Savage (1947)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection PRC Vol. 7)
Two adventurers and their airplane are hired by the owner of a diamond mine in Africa to locate the village of some troublesome natives. Solid jungle adventure with just the right amount of stock footage. Good cast. 6/10
54. Slaves in Bondage (1937)* (Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collection Roadshow Attractions Vol. 1)
The owner of a manicure parlor runs ads attracting small town girls to the big city and then steers them on the road to vice and prostitution. Despite the lurid title pretty much a straight rackets story but there are a couple of nice lingerie lounging scenes and some good-natured spanking going on in the Asian room! Filled with familiar faces from b-movies and serials including director Elmer Clifton and frequent serial baddie John Merton. 5/10
55. Seedpeople (1992)* (Full Moon Classics Volume One)
A geologist returns to his home town and finds many people acting very strange. Ripoff, homage or whatever, this shares the same idea and structure as Invasion of the Body Snatchers but there are some neat looking monsters and it is a pleasant watch. 5/10
56. Netherworld (1992)* (Full Moon Classics Volume One)
A man tries to resurrect his father. Has a nice Bayou atmosphere, great location shots, creepiness, supernatural horror and a few small surprises. Very well done. 7/10

April 29
57. Bad Channels (1992)* (Full Moon Classics Volume One)
A shock jock is trapped in a radio studio with aliens but the world thinks its just a publicity stunt. Loud and silly, some of the musical numbers helped keep my interest but I was glad when it was over. 4/10
58. Hell Up In Harlem (1973)*
Sequel to Black Caesar. Kind of a disjointed story, wraps up stuff from the first movie and gets Tommy Gibbs back on top then a story finally emerges. Things just sometimes seem to happen for no reason and even the action scenes seem a bit perfunctory. Also, Gibbs is kind of a dick. Good songs and music. 4/10
59. Snake Crane Secret (1976)* (Mill Creek Martial Arts 20 Movie Pack Disc 5)
Agents of the Ching Dynasty search for a book of kung fu secrets that also contains a list of rebel leaders -- or something like that. Fun fights, likeable characters, and a mostly understandable if not too original plot. 5/10

April 30
60. The Crippled Masters (1979)* (Mill Creek Martial Arts 20 Movie Pack Disc 5)
An evil kung fu master has two of his men mutilated for reasons not made clear. One has both of his arms cut off and the other has both legs destroyed by acid. They team up and train to get revenge on the evil one. Pretty standard kung fu film except the the amazing fight scenes involved the two lead actors, who really are disabled and know martial arts. The actor who plays the villain also does a good job. 6/10

Sunday & Monday, 3/31 - 4/1
TV MOVIE DOUBLE FEATURE
1. Annihilator (1986) - Extremely entertaining NBC made-for-TV movie from Roderick Taylor (of Otherworld fame) about Terminator-esque Android killers called 'Dynamitards' that have replaced certain humans. It's an unsold pilot that never made it to series, so we unfortunately never find out just what the hell these things are or where they came from.
2. K-9000 (1991) - Another unsold pilot/TV movie about a genetically engineered canine with human DNA and a microchip in its brain that communicates telepathically with a cop. Think Turner & Hooch meets Lethal Weapon by way of Knight Rider.

RUDY RAY MOORE 2-FER
3. The Human Tornado (1976) NWI - "He think he's bad and ain't got no class! I'm gon' rock this shotgun up his muthafuckin' ass!"
4. Disco Godfather (1979) NWI - "Put your weight on it!"

SUB 60 MINUTE 2SOME
5. Nightshift Nurses (1970) 55 Min - I somehow confused "Nightshift Nurses" for "The Student Nurses". Mistook it for Corman's first nurse film (the latter), but instead ended up with an early 70's porno with a nickel and dime budget that I watched anyway. I sincerely wish I could undo that mistake, although it probably explains the nightmare I had last night where a giant Chinchilla wrapped in shag carpeting attacked me.
6. The Girl Who Dared (1944) NWI 52 Min - Decent Old Dark House film that differentiates itself from the others due to a portion taking place outside and in an underground cave.

TWO IN MEMORY OF UNCLE JESS (1930 - 2013)
7. The Awful Dr. Orlof (1962) TCMU - Basically it's Franco's version of "Eyes Without a Face" and it's not bad. Gives Bava a run for his money in the atmosphere department.
8. Dr. Orloff's Monster (aka "The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll") (1964) NWI - Unfortunately I caught the Netflix streaming version that omits 10 minutes of footage. Still, a decent followup to the original, although really more of a remake than a sequel. The zombie controlled by radio waves gave it somewhat of a Sci-Fi feel due to the accompanying music.

Gave up on reviews after 3 days - New challenge record!

Re: List thread for Fourth Annual Drive-in/Exploitation/B-Movie Challenge April 1-30

1.)
Black Samson (1974) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: So I have to admit that I was a little underwhelmed. Perhaps because this one was touted as being a must see in the main thread. The lion was a fun element but you could tell he was drugged up a lot or being fed snacks. I can only imagine the awesome lion related stories that a commentary for this movie could have had. Otherwise the movie was a bit by the numbers, evil white guys, hot white girl that comes to appreciate the black lead, ect. I did really like the psycho evil white guy and the climax of the movie was epic enough to bump this one up to above average.

2.)
Shadow Zone (1990) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Ah, now this is my kind of B-Movie! Low budget 80's/90's sci-fi; boobs, puppet creatures, Lo Pan, monkey's, computers that can answer questions/make guesses. We almost have that last one with Siri but it's still not up to the point that 80's sci-fi promised. The movie is a lovely slurry of other Sci-Fi properties in much the same way Leviathan was. It does drags a bit in the end but delivers on the intrigue and some interesting Lovcraftian vibes. A fine representation of Full Moon's 'A' material.

3.)
Killjoy (2000) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: WTF? Seriously Full Moon, how could you go in just a decade from making decent movies like Shadowzone to making this kind of trash? It is rare that I give out my lowest possible score of 1 out of 5 but this movie has nothing going for it. Strike that, one pair of nice tits but otherwise this is essentially trash. I find it a travesty that this film has 3 sequels and even worse that I own 2 of them (even if they were free).
(1 out of 5)
4.)
The Marine (2006) (TV) *
My Thoughts: I remember seeing trailers for this, seeing it stared a WWF type and thinking that it was probably just mindless red state exploitative trash. And it was. But I caught the first part on tv and it was so ridiculous that I just had to keep watching. There are some indestructible cars, buildings that explode way more then they should, 3 or 4 jumping in front of explosion shots and Robert Patrick as the villain was fun but they played it a little too loose with the 4th wall. In the end it really is just what you think it is, kind of like those 90's Seagal movies except made today.
(3 out of 5)
5.)
The Exterminator (1980) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Great movie, an excellent companion piece to Maniac. Set in a grimy 80's New York, a Vietnam vet gets pushed to far and decides to take the law into his own hands. The slow burn/prep moments are really effective here, which is something I only point out as this seems to detract and throw other movies out of rhythm. Quite a pleasant surprise, now I am defiantly looking forward to the squeal here later in the challenge.

6.)
Commentary For The Exterminator (1980) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: An interesting track, lots of bits about the MPAA, shooting in New York, penises/legs on the wall. One interesting notion was that the director, clearly who had no part in the sequel, said he liked to think that First Blood was the real spiritual sequel to The Exterminator. And a fairly recent topical track at that as at one point Avatar is brought up. Well worth a listen.
(4 out of 5)
7.)
Killjoy 2 (2002) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Well, another pile of shit from Full Moon. This one is not near as bad as the first one and hits a lot closer to the Leprechaun In The Hood vibe that this series was aiming for. And I'll even give it another half star for having a movie specific tie-in song over the credits.
(2 out of 5)
8.)
Ninja Powerforce (1988) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Hey!?! This isn't a ninja movie! It is a standard Hong Kong hood movie with several scenes of white people dressed a ninja outfits and acting ridiculously spliced in. And I am talking white people in banana yellow and crayon red ninja costumes here. While it is a horrible Frankenstein piece of celluloid it does come out as passible and even a bit humorous in the distributions company's editing audacity.

- April 4th -
9.)
42nd Street Forever Vol 5: Alamo Drafthouse (2009) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I don't really go in for trailer collections on the principal that they spoil too much. But I had heard so many good things about this series, and have developed quite a soft spot for the Alamo Drafthouse after all the cool things they have sold me for my walls, that I decided to give it a go. And I was not disappointed, it's a different experience from a movie, alway at climax no time to recoup but it works quite well. I could have gone for a few more non-trailer items in the mix but still a highly enjoyable experience. Also I made a list of 17 titles to procure (if possible) while watching.
(4 out of 5)
10.)
Emanuelle And The White Slave Trade (1978) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Another fun sexy travelog with Black Emanuelle. This time to Kenya, New York and San Diego, I do hope one day to be as well traveled as Laura Gemser. This one felt a bit paint by numbers compared to the outings in the first box set. But still lots of sex and the lovely Mrs Gemser constantly naked makes this an enjoyable, if not wholly unoriginal, experience.
(3 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Sexy Emanuelle... and I guess she get the tanned, skin looks different than last time. I can guess what is going to happen because all stories are same; she get involved something then she get raped then she has sex again. They need to make better story but I enjoy Africa scene, I enjoy animal.
(3 out of 5)
- April 5th -
11.)
Ninja Phantom Heroes (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: This, like the last "Ninja" movie I watched, is a Ninjas added later affair. The took another, less entertaining, Chinese mafia movie and pasted in scenes of white guys dressed like Ninja's doing lame martial arts. Overall I was mostly bored but the last 5 minutes did migrate into 'so bad it's good' territory, but only the last 5 minutes.
(2.5 out of 5)
12.)
The Grand Duel (1972) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Hey, it's that song from Kill Bill! And the guy that is The Bad from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly! And this was actually a really good Spaghetti Western. I must admit to lowered expectations after the last Mill Creek Spaghetti Western 2 pack BR, but this one alone was worth the cost of admission.
(4 out of 5)
- April 6th -
13.)
Killjoy 3 (2010) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Well color me surprised, this one was even better than the last one. Still not in the range of a passable movie but at the rate these are improving Killjoy 7 is set up to be a masterpiece. They branched away from the Leprechaun dynamic here and brought in Hellraiser and Nightmare on Elm Street and a much better cast and got something not awful. The Harley Quinn-ish demon clown was even kind of hot in a weird way. And I don't think I would ever have envisioned myself saying this but I am looking forward to the next one.
(2.5 out of 5)
14.)
Three The Hard Way (1974) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Honkey's found a toxin that will only kill black people and there is only 3 bad ass brothers who can stop him. Blaxploitation at it's finest, car chases/crashes, nudity, kung-fu and a bunch of evil crackers. I was actually called a cracker just last month and the only thing that really came to mind was this challenge and wanting to see some good Blaxploitation of which this one one delivered on.
(4 out of 5)
15.)
Screaming In High Heels (2011) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Subtitle: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era. I got this as a prize during the OHMC and it was amazing. Now I feel I must preface this with the fact that it has to be something you are into but if you are then buy it buy it buy it! The doc focuses on the the three main Scream Queens, Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer & Brinke Stevens, the uptick and downfall of the independent video market and even the convention scene. Everything covered here had a profound effect on my youth and I loved reliving all of it. And I can't believe how many clips were shown from movies I have yet to acquire. I feel i am getting a litter hyperbolic at this point but this has easily supplanted Never Sleep Again as my favorite horror retrospective.
(5 out of 5)
16.)
Golden Ninja Invasion (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: First off there are no golden ninja's in this movie. There are Red Sun Ninjas and a Blue Ninja. The ladder a white guy edited into the movie. This time they at least had some interaction with the edited in guy via having him always being on the other end of the phone. Then there is the music which directly steals songs from horror movies, it is really weird to be watching an action movie where they are constantly playing the Nightmare on Elm Street theme. The whole movie is really just an incoherent mess but it really fits the challenge and would lend it's self well to Rifftrakery. It was at least interesting trash.

17.)
The World Sinks Except Japan (2006) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: So I was kind of expecting a sci-fi end of the world destruction extravaganza here and yeah not so much. It was more of a dark goofy political comedy about the plague of foreigners that are forced to take up residents in Japan after the rest of the world sinks. Kind of degrading, kind of funny and an interesting look into the Japanese culture's psyche in regards to "foreigners".
(3.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Very strange/creepy and I'm sure this movie didn't do well foreign country except Japan. But they use ok actor Japanese wise but foreigner very low budget.
(3 out of 5)
18.)
Famous T & A (1982) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: It seems like it would be hard to mess up a boob compilation. But they did. There is some nice nudity here but also a lot of scenes which out of context are really boring and there is way too much focus on a bright red sun-brunt ass. The best part of this one was the Charles Band intro but since that is on ever Grindhouse release it's not much of a selling point.
(2 out of 5)
19.)
Video Violence 2 (1987) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Big step down from the original, no mystery here this time just a continuation of the snuff TV show that was only just bearable in the first movie. This time it stretched the length of the feature and I think played a pretty big part in my headache tonight.
(1.5 out of 5)
My Wife'sThoughts: It was so boring the first 1 hour I almost fall asleep and seems like home video taping it's not like movie, I can make it. The last 20 minutes were good but I can give them 2 star because it was sucked.
(2 out of 5)
- April 8th -
20.)
Wacky Taxi (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A dingy little comedy about the ups and downs of the unlicensed taxi business. Only mildly entertaining and ultimately forgettable if not for the lead played by tv's Gomez Adams. But it was the pallet cleansing change of pace I was wanting.
(3 out of 5)
- April 9th -
21.)
Keoma (1976) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Django as a hippy halfbreed do-gooder. Couple that with a lot of weird and this one didn't quite work for me. Reminded me of Fistful Of Dynamite with a more by the number plot.
(3 out of 5)
- April 10th -
22.)
In Like Flint (1967) (DVD)
My Thoughts: Flints back and this time he has to stop an organization of power hungry women from taking over the world. The character is still a lovable asshole (reminds me a lot of Archer (a brainier Archer)) but they go a bit too far into the comedy aspect this time and it often falls flat. Such as a scene were he is suppose to be singing in a foreign language but really just saying 'La La La La' whilst a red star is bouncing across equally non-sensical foreign words on the bottom of the screen. Still an entertaining outing with interesting parallels to future Bond movies.
(3.5 out of 5)
- April 11th -
23.)
Lonely Wives (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A surprisingly good German housewife sexploitation. Funny, sexy, everything you want out of one of these movie and those German girls, not guilty. On a DVD production note; Code Red, what is up with the menus? You already have this great Drive-In them for the package but the menus for these say Septic Cinema and have crappy rendered crap on them, wtf? I am guessing that was the original theme and you never bothered to change it prior to release, how could you think Septic Cinema would sell? 'I know lets equate the movies we are selling to fecal matter', I mean come on Code Red!
(4 out of 5)

24.)
Vigilante (1983) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: This movie blew me away. Very similar to The Exterminator except just a little bit better in every way. I remember watching the opening and thinking 'oh man something horrible is going to happen to that family, they are having much too good of a wholesome time in New York'. So far this is my front runner for best of challenge.
(5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Good, but I need little more story around the ending. Because he just killed 2 people come on, he suppose to get back with wife, better story, better ending. Demo very scary and good suspense.
(3.5 out of 5)
25.)
Viva Django (1968) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A decent knockoff and while not technically a better movie than Keoma I did like it better. This time Django is a hangman who collects a posse by faking the deaths of the people he is hanging. I was initially a little disappointed coming out of the original Django but I am on board now, bring on the clones. On a release note; the set this came in labels this as Viva Django but it actually appears to be Django, Prepare A Coffin, also pictureboxed, grrrr.
(3.5 out of 5)
26.)
Hot Potato (1976) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I am not sure if this really even qualifies as a blaxploitation title anymore, it's more of an enable action adventure comedy. Basically Black-Belt Jones goes to Thailand. I really enjoyed this one, American movies set abroad really resonate with me for some reason. White guys with Asian girls perhaps? Or it could have been somewhat influenced by the 10 point beer... But I think the think I really liked the most that whitey wasn't the bad guy!
(4 out of 5)
- April 13th -
27.)
Savage Island (1985) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: An interesting hodgepodge, apparently Charles Band bought a foreign 'woman jungle slaves' type movie and then shot a day with Linda Blair and edited the two together into a less than cohesive story. By themselves I probably would have enjoyed both movies, together they mutually detracted from the other. Still an interesting idea, someday I would like to watch this with someone who didn't know the background behind to gauge their reaction.
(2.5 out of 5)
- April 14th -
28.)
Superargo (1968) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Not to be confused, like I did, with Argoman. Since they are both seemingly based on the same character I wonder if this is a foreign comic book or something? In this one he is a ex-wrestler turned telepathic crime stopper. It has overtones of bad 50's robot/alien movies an evil layer set in what is clearly a tourist attraction cave, overall very on the nose for the challenge I just was, unfortunately, not in the right frame of mind to really enjoy it this time. But I'll give it another chance in a decade or so.
(3 out of 5)
29.)
Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except (1987) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: This one of those movies that I picked up over and over again in stores but never actually purchased. And that is probably for the best as if I had seen it outside of the context of this challenge I think I would have been very disappointed, especially with the names attached. Otherwise it's marines vs crazed hippies and while it is a bit slow to climax and painfully low budget, there is some shlocky fun to be had here. I am kind of amazed that this is a movie I now own on blu-ray.
(3 out of 5)
- April 15th -
30.)
Commentary For Thou Shalt Not Kill... Except (1987) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Kind of a flat track but given the source material you can't really blame them. Also it has Bruce Campbell and even Bruce Campbell not being terribly interesting makes it still better than most tracks. Highlights include ragging on Sam Raimi, Bruce saying things like "thats my foot in that insert, you can tell by how well it was acted" and some interesting things about the woes of a low budget production. Not a phenomenal track but still slightly better than the movie.
(3 out of 5)
31.)
Blackie The Pirate (1971) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Hey! How did this pirate movie get in my spaghetti western 10 pack? I guess since it stars Terrance Hill but still. It is actually a decent pirate movie, just caught me off guard when I was expecting a western.
(3.5 out of 5)
32.)
Riot On 42nd St (1987) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: There was something about this movie that hit me just right. The music, the actors, the tits, crime ridden New York, in the 80's it seemed to be a recipe for success. Instead of having a lead walk by the seedy strip clubs this one is about owning and operating said seedy strip clubs! On the DVD production side; this host Maria is no Elvira but still way way better than the Septic Cinema theme they had going with previous releases.
(4 out of 5)
33.)
Bad Girls Dormitory (1986) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: I really wanted to love this but it just didn't work. The girls weren't pretty enough or good enough actors they were naked frequently but more for quantity's sake. Also, not something I rag on often, but the editing was awful, they lingered on scenes way way too long, probably in an effort to boost screen time but it just really started to annoy me. I will give the host props fro hating on it a bit but she should have been much much harsher.
(2.5 out of 5)
- April 16th -
34.)
Tedeum (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A good sleazy western comedy with Curley from City Slickers playing a lecherous monk impersonator. You don't see many land scam western comedies. This one hit a good chord with me and has made me a bit more optimistic about this Spaghetti Western Bible DVD set.
(3.5 out of 5)
- April 17th -
35.)
King Frat (1979) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: A super low brow Animal House knock off. Which I might have liked if 90% of the jokes weren't about shitting and farting. They even go so far as to have an on stage farting competition. There was about 20 minutes of entertainment here though and the King Frat song is still stuck in my head. On a DVD production note (seems I am making a lot of these in regards to Code Red properties): You couldn't get one screen grab or anything from this movie? You just had to use your face (Code Red owner) on the cover? Really?

35.)
Cheering Section (1977) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Plenty of sex in this one but like most comedies it did not age well and ends up being more boring than entertaining (that is something that might have been exacerbated due to the poop picture quality). Also another movie specific song, I forgot how common this was, it is a trend that should come back.

36.)
The Revenge Of Trinity (1970) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: As I get deeper and deeper into this spaghetti western thing there are 4 words that seems to be repeated over and over; DJango, Terrence, Bud & Trinity. A cursory google search shows this to be an in name only Trinity movie but it was still decent. I avoided westerns for so long due to it being the only thing my grandfather ever watched and it kind of being categorized as an old person genre for a long time, but there is a great wealth of entertainment here. Even in mediocre titles such as this.

37.)
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (2013) (TV) (Wild Card #1) *
My Thoughts: There are some shockumentary elements here as Bourdain eats his way across Myanmar, enough maybe even to justify wildcard usage. Quite an interesting look at a place that I thought had zero allowed tourism. There were a lot of things I would really enjoy going and doing if not quite eating in Myanmar. Also why is this on CNN? Are they trying to branch out like MTV did? I hope so if this is a good example of the quality we can expect.

38.)
Black Belt Jones (1974) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: This was a really good 4 pack; Black Samson, Black Belt Jones, Hot Potato and Three The Hard Way (That is the order I suggest watching them in btw). Also I love how Warner Brothers couldn't bring themselves to say Blaxploitation and had to call it an Urban Action collection. Black Belt Jones plays like your standard Kung-Fu school movie. Threat to the school, headmaster killed, only one man can save us. There are some over the top fun variations on the theme, double crosses and some really weird beach fight/chase seduction sex. If it is a genre you are interested in this is a must see.
(4 out of 5)
39.)
A Man Called Sledge (1970) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: It is so weird seeing James Garner as an anti hero. That and in a surprisingly good heist movie that takes a very weird turn. A surprisingly good movie that kept me guessing. I might have to check out a few more of these Most Wanted Westerns releases.
(4 out of 5)
40.)
Resident Evil: Retribution 3D (2012) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: This one plays the most like a video game out of any from the series and that is not necessarily a good thing. I was partial to parts 3 & 4 and the post apocalyptic setting. This one is a bit too sterile and contained in a still perfectly functioning Umprella base. But it was still an amazing showpiece for my 3DTV.

Commentary For Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Finally! After being absent for the commentaries on the last 2 movies, Milla is back. And she is just as weird and enchanting as ever. She is a bit tempered by having husband, Anderson, in the booth. They need to liquor her up and throw her in there with Rodriguez again. Still better than the average commentary.
(3.5 out of 5)

42.)
Female Demon Ohyaku (1968) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: Not quite the Pinky Violence outing I was expecting but still quite good. Sometimes I think I should just buy the whole Synapse library, I would most defiantly sign up for it if it were done with a subscription service. This one plays a lot like classic Japanese movies set in the time of Samurai and courtesans but gets progressively more and more exploitative as the the film progresses. High class trash.
(4 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: Great Japanese movie. Japanese movie is very violent. And I realize japanese like revenge. I can give them 4 star revenge movie, owari.
(4 out of 5)

43.)
Convoy Buddies (1976) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: By all accounts this wasn't a good movie, it was ridiculous, stupid, often poorly acted/dubbed, the video quality was awful but I loved it. A slapstick 70's comedy about 2 idiot vagabonds who sign up to truck a load from Italy to France. While I admit alcohol might have played a slight roll in my enjoyment here there was also something about this duo of actors that just made this a treat.
(3.5 out of 5)
- April 25th -
44.)
Sorry Wrong Bedroom (1973) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Another German sexploitation, there is something abut those German girls and their Oktoberfest outfits. This one is about a German strip club that decides that it's clients want more country girls. Which means girls from Holland I guess? Anyway it turns into a road trip movie and has lots and lots of naked European girls. There is some weird off putting dubbing where girls refer to sex as making whoopee (there is something about that particular piece of 70's vernacular that really doesn't work for me), but it is thankfully infrequent.
(3.5 out of 5)
45.)
The Promotion (2008) (TV) (Wild Card #2) *
My Thoughts: I know this was a comedy but I found it so utterly depressing. This is my life now, I have got to get out of the retail racket. Self introspection aside the movie was exceedingly average but most movies about 9 to 5 jobs are... except 9 To 5 which I quite enjoyed.
(3 out of 5)
46.)
V.I. Warshawski (1991) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Woah, this is the most 90's thing I have seen in quite awhile. Plays like a super cliched 90's tv show with just enough swear words sprinkled throughout for plausible deniability to be categorized as an actual movie while remaining easy to televise with just a little dubbing. It is pretty bad and I think this title will have the dubious distinction of being the first Blu-Ray I get rid of (and I still have VHS tapes). What happened Kathleen Turner?
(2 out of 5)
47.)
Black Shampoo (1976) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Kind of a by the numbers blaxploitation but still fairly entertaining. Liked the sex crazed white girls, in fact lots of nudity all around, and I think one ball slip for the ladies. Evil white guys, but a least they aren't racist, just evil. And a shocking climax that feels almost out of place in what is predominately a comedy. I got my $5 worth of entertainment.
(3.5 out of 5)
48.)
Commentary For Black Shampoo (1976) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Long moments of silence punctuated by so and so actor has passed away. There were a few nuggets here and there but this was mostly a waste of time. What they should have done was edited the phone interviews with the main actor into this commentary. It could have easily been accomplished and have made this a passable track.
(2 out of 5)
49.)
Red Scorpion (1988) (Blu-Ray) **
My Thoughts: I never really covered the Russians in africa in any history classes I ever had so I always find movies about that period fascinating and this was no exception. That and we have Dolph just generally being awesome and doing the Avatar/Dances with Wolves thing. I obviously really liked this movie so instead of gushing I will relate a brief aside I had with the wife. There was a scene where the Russians are moving in and attacking this village with flamethrowers and the wife says: "Bad Americans". To which I reply "Those are Russians". She thinks about it for a second and says "All white people the same".
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: He's very hot. It was great movie but it was little too violent and similar story movies are existed. But I like it, (you) need to lose weight. He's so hot. Good movie, thank you.

Commentary For Red Scorpion (1988) (Blu-Ray) *
My Thoughts: Good commentary, excellent moderation. Of course we would have all preferred to have Dolph for the commentary but what can you do? Lots of interesting info about the film and it's success, which is odd considering I have never heard of this film prior to the bluray release.

Diamond Peddlers (1976) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Hey it's the guys from Convoy Buddies! Looking at wikipedia there are several other movies with this duo that I need to track down, they are for some reason so highly enjoyable. There is this song that plays throughout both movies that is so 70's/weird/out of place but is so oddly amusing. As you can see I am struggling to accurately explain what this movie does for me when I could really just say fun goofy Italian slapstick comedy. I don't have nearly enough Italian movies, that is something I should rectify.

The Call Him Bulldozer (1978) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: OK I am going to say WTF here on the Spaghetti Western Bible 10 pack, I think the majority of the movies I have watched from this set haven't been westerns at all. This one is about a disgraced former football player who trains a team of neighborhood street rats to play football against some army guys who are harassing him for almost no reason. Had this movie been American I would have had almost zero interest in it at all but as an Italian film pretending to be an American film it holds a certain amount of interest. But otherwise it's just kind of average.

Wandering Ginza Butterfly (1971) (DVD) **
My Thoughts: I, like many, became a fan of Meiko Kaji following the release of Kill Bill Vol 1. There was even a point where I had all region 1 releases starring her but I drifted into other things and trailed off. So this is the first Kaji fix I have had in years and I really enjoyed it. Radiant and deadly as ever and it would seem Kill Bill Vol 1. owes quite a bit of it's climax to this movie (perhaps). Also it was fun to see her play the hostess roll which is completely out of character for everything I have ever seen her in. I think I will have to get back into the Meiko Kaji racket.
(4.5 out of 5)
My Wife's Thoughts: It's great movie, sad ending, I did not expect that ending. I saw many famous actors now. Meiko Kaji very pretty but where is she now?

Jesse And Lester, Two Brothers In A Place Called Trinity (1972) (DVD) *
My Thoughts: Double picture boxes!! Almost, they took the original cut off the sides for full screen, then that print was taken and made widescreen but in a full screen picture (bars added to the top and bottom). The movie content wise as a lot more mediocre than it's plot synopsis would belie. Not tear your eyes out bad or anything but not the bang I was really wanting to go out on for the challenge.
