The Sixth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2015

This thread is for lists only.
For discussion, go to the May 2015 Make-Your-Own Challenge Discussion Thread.

It's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., and decide what you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

You choose your own Challenge theme and you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Sure, you can run your May MYOC in September if you want, but the list thread will only be stickied during May, so if you want anyone else to see what you're up to, please try to do it near those dates.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread:

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Movie Pile" Threads, please do not use "Unwatched Movie Pile" as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So how about giving a little thought to the theme and coming up with something a little more creative, please?

HOW TO WIN
On June 1st, three winners will be randomly chosen from the Challenge participants (using Random.org). In keeping with the spirit of the Make-Your-Own Challenge, those three winners will pick their own prizes from HamiltonBook.com.

Prize selection will be limited to items priced $25 or less.

You must have a US mailing address to receive a prize.

Any unclaimed prize opportunities will be re-gifted on June 4.

I will announce the prizes chosen so we can all be envious and/or amused by the selections.

The Exploring Poverty Row Studios Challenge
An Adventure in B-movies

Poverty Row refers to small Hollywood studios from 1920's to the 1950's which produced only B-movies, often as cheaply and as quickly as possible. These films might end up as the second part of a double feature or as first run movies in small, local theaters. The studios often lasted only a few years and many had to rent sound stages and equipment to make films or would package films from other producers including low budget British films. The larger, more successful Poverty Row Studios included Republic, Monogram, and PRC but there were many other smaller and even more budget conscious enterprises. A very good overview with an emphasis on westerns can be found here.

Counting:
Standard 50+ min. films count 1, serial chapters equaling 60 minutes count 1

Goal: 50

* = first time viewing of a film
Note: SCPRSC = Sinister Cinema Poverty Row Studio Collections

May 01
Avengers Day - the furthest possible place from Poverty Row!

May 02
01. Sucker Money (1933)* (Mill Creek Dark Crimes 50 Movie Pack Disk: 7)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Willis Kent.
A reporter infiltrates a crooked swami's gang. Misch Auer stars as the fake spiritualist. Off to a good start. Tightly plotted with a lot of neat touches. OK print but the sound is very low. Billed as "an expose of the PSYCHIC RACKET; a True Life Photoplay". 6.5/10

xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 1: King of the Dirt Tracks (28:37)
A Mascot Serial.
Race car driver Burn 'Em Up Barnes (Jack Mulhall) gives up the sport after the death of his best friend and becomes a partner in a school bus company. He's forced to return to the track in order to get money after the company's only bus is destroyed by a hit and run dump truck. If he fails to win, his partner Marjorie (Lola Lane) will be forced to sell potentially valuable land in order to keep the company going.

May 03
02. The Woman Condemned (1934)* (Mill Creek Dark Crimes 50 Movie Pack Disk: 11)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Willis Kent.
A female investigator (Claudia Dell) is accused of murdering a popular radio songbird (Lola Lane) and her reporter husband tries to prove her innocence. Not nearly as well written as Sucker Money the story wanders but the resolution is so wildly improbably that it made the movie for me. Ms. Dell is no great actress but she is kind of cute. 5/10

xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 2: The News Reel Murder (19:35)
Burn-'Em-Up wins the big race but protests are filed so his prize money is delayed. In order to get some quick cash he agrees to test an experimental automobile. The stock footage has been interesting so far. From various kinds of racing in the first chapter to car survival tests in this one.
03. Murder in the Museum (1934)* (SCPRSC Progressive Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Willis Kent.
While investigating a dingy museum, essentially a carnival side show, a reform minded councilman is shot in the middle of a crowded room. A persistent reporter and the police commissioner's daughter work on the case. OK mystery with a clever if unlikely resolution. 6/10

May 04
04. Calendar Girl (1947)* (Mill Creek Classic Musicals 50 Movie Pack Disk: 2)
Released by Republic Pictures. Produced by Republic Pictures.
A painter and a composer arrive in Greenwich Village from Boston and find lodgings at a rooming house full of other artists. Romance and success follow. This musical comedy is fun with OK if not memorable songs. The leads are fine for a musical but some of the better moments come from the smaller rolls, in particular Victor McLaglen as an Irish fireman and Franklin Pangborn as a producer. Nice change from mysteries. 6/10

May 05
05. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 3: The Phantom Witness (18:48)
The bad guys try to stop Burn-'Em-Up from getting some news reel film developed that can clear him of a murder charge. Jack Mulhall makes a likeable and very energetic hero. So far this has been a very entertaining serial.

May 06
06. Delinquent Parents (1938)* (SCPRSC Progressive Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Porgressive Picturs (B.N. Judell).
A family court judge must protect the daughter she gave up for adoption at birth years ago from the machinations of the daughter's father who has become a powerful but corrupt politician. Whew. A little convoluted and coincidence driven but absorbing none the less. Well acted, just a touch sleazy, and with a social message concerning parent's responsibilities to their children. 7/10

May 07
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 4: The Celluloid Clue (16:22)
In a less than stellar chapter everybody is still chasing around after the film and that's it. At the end the baddies had it back and Burn-'Em-Up rolls his race car.
07. Rebellious Daughters (1938)* (SCPRSC Progressive Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Porgressive Picturs (B.N. Judell).
Usual good girl/bad girl pair leave a small town and go to New York City to take jobs modeling in a gown shop which fronts for a blackmail racket. Throws in minor social commentary about too permissive parents who are never home (bad girl) and parents who are too strict for their own good (good girl). Emtertaining with decent acting and a standard plot. The resolution is too simplistic and a bit silly. 6/10

May 08
08. Slander House (1938)* (SCPRSC Progressive Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Progressive Pictures. Produced by Progressive Pictures (B.N. Judell).
A women who worked her way out of poverty and now owns a health spa for rich women is almost engaged to marry a wealthy doctor when her life is turned upside down by a brash gambler who has fallen in love with her. Mostly comedy with a touch of drama the film has the message that one shouldn't push upward social mobility too far and too fast. Good cast. 6/10

May 09
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 5: The Decoy Driver (19:54)
The film finally gets to the DA and Burn-'Em-Up is cleared of the murder charge but the real culprit is still on the loose so our hero tries to track him down.
09. Coyote Trails (1935)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 3)
Released by William Steiner. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
Tom Tyler tries to solve the mystery of a wild white stallion who ranchers blame for the disappearance of their horses. Tyler is a likeable, sturdy looking cowboy hero good on horses and in fistfights. The story doesn't always make total sense but action is plentiful. Sidekick Windy is not as annoying as some and actually proves useful at times.

10. Wyoming Whirlwind (1932)* (SCPRSC Willis Kent Productions Vol. 1)
Released by Willis Kent Productions. Produced by Willis Kent Productions.
Lane Chandler plays The Wolf who is wanted by the law but who is trying to reclaim his ranch which was stolen by his father's murderer. Chandler is OK but I liked Tom Tyler better. The script is good and the rest of the cast and the action is decent. No sidekick here so Chandler talks to his horse if no one else is around. 5.5/10

11. Wild Horse Phantom (1944)* (VCI Buster Crabbe Classic Westerns)
Released by Producers Releasing Corporation. Produced by Producers Releasing Corporation.
Buster Crabbe, billed here as 'King of the Wild West', plays Billy Carson who is trying to track down stolen bank money so some ranchers won't lose everything. Slicker than the first two westerns, there's too much time spent skulking around a deserted mine although there are some odd twists to the story. "Fuzzy" St. John is still kind of annoying but his fight with a giant bat(!) is pretty good. 5/10

May 10
12. The Midnight Phantom (1935)* (SCPRSC Reliable Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Reliable Pictures Corporation. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
A disliked Police Chief is murdered at a midnight lecture given by a noted criminologist who then tries to identify the killer. A very long build-up, establishing many motives for the murder, leads to an interesting but easily solved crime. Claudia Dell pops up again as as the Chief's daughter. 5/10

13, Law of the Tong (1931)* (SCPRSC Willis Kent Productions Vol. 1)
Released by Syndicate Film Exchange. Produced by Willis Kent.
A down on her luck dance hall girl becomes involved with a tong smuggling illegal immigrants into the country. Interesting but a bit racist. Supporting parts are played by Asians but the two main tong members are played by Jason Robards and Frank Lackteen. Robards has been seen in more than one film so far including playing one of the main villains in Burn-'Em-Up Barnes. 6/10

14. Tundra (1936)* (SCPRSC Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises. Produced by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises.
A flying doctor crashes in the tundra of Alaska hundreds of miles from civilization and has to survive with only the help of two black bear cubs. Filmed in the Arctic Circle. Lots of wildlife footage which is interesting but no real thrills. The Doc's wilderness skills are about zero but he runs pretty darned fast when he has to. 4.5/10

May 11
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 6: The Crimson Alibi (18:12)
Burn-'Em-Up gets a written confession from the real murderer so now the bad guys chase our heroes around trying to get their hands on that. Not a bad chapter but I hope this doesn't go on for too long.
15. Sinister Hands (1932)* (SCPRSC Willis Kent Productions Vol. 1)
Released by William Steiner. Produced by Willis Kent.
A man is murdered during a seance at his home and a police detective is called to find the murderer. There is a build-up before the murder where we learn the various motives several people have for doing away with the man. The same information is revealed after the murder during a boring sequence of interviews with the detective. This information is then summarized as the detective makes a list of the suspects. Finally we hear it all again for a fourth time when everyone is gathered in a room and the killer is revealed. And that's about it for the plot. The best part of the film is the seance and murder. Jack Mulhall is subdued as the detective although Mischa Auer is good as the swami. 4/10

16. The Drag-Net (1936)* (SCPRSC Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises. Produced by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises.
A playboy fresh out of law school is sent by his father to work for the District Attorney. He quickly becomes involved in a murder and corruption in the DA's office. OK story but Rod La Rocque is a much better playboy than he is assistant DA. It's hard to see why the DA lets him work on the case at all and the big break comes from his girlfriend, a reporter. Entertaining but just barely. 4.5/10

May 12
17. 23 1/2 Hours Leave (1937) (SCPRSC Grand National Vol. 2)
Released by Grand National Pictures. Produced by Douglas MacLean Productions.
Set in an Army camp in 1917 a lazy but rich sergeant sings some songs, woos the general's daughter, and captures two German agents. OK musical comedy. I didn't get too many laughs out of this although there were a couple near the end. The songs were pretty good though. Star James Ellison, who also did a bunch of westerns, makes a good playboy type and has a nice voice. 5/10

May 13
Took a break.

May 14
18. Bank Alarm (1937)* (SCPRSC Grand National Vol. 2)
Released by Grand National Pictures. Produced by Condor Pictures Inc.
A federal agent and a newspaper reporter try to break up a gang of bank robbers. Conrad Nagel does a good job as the methodical fed and Eleanor Hunt is OK as the reporter. The wrench in all this is the annoying and unfunny comic relief provided by Vince Barnett as a clumsy and cowardly photograher. Otherwise an entertaining story. 5.5/10

May 15
19. We're in the Legion Now (1936) (SCPRSC Grand National Pictures Vol. 2)
Released by Grand National Pictures. Produced by George A. Hirliman Productions.
Two gangsters fleeing from a mob boss join the French Foreign Legion and find danger and romance. Action comedy isn't all that funny but I liked Vince Barnett as one of the gangsters much more in this film. Also featured Eleanor Hunt and the always lovely Claudia Dell. Ms. Hunt isn't a classic beauty but she is appealing. Good location shots and action packed conclusion. In color! 6/10

20. Shadows Over Shanghai (1938) (SCPRSC Grand National Pictures Vol. 2)
Released by Grand National Pictures. Produced by Fine Arts Pictures Inc.
In war torn China a young American woman gets part of an amulet which she must get to San Francisco in order to get funds for the Chinese war effort. She is pursued by a greedy Russian and an agent of the Japanese Empire. Darned good spy picture with lots of intrigue and plot twists. Ralph Morgan, who I've only seen in serials in minor parts, has a good role here. The love interest, a brash newspaper photographer, approaches annoying at times but isn't as bad as some I've seen. 6.5/10

May 16
21. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 7: Roaring Rails (15:45)
A clever escape at the beginning sets the tone for a solid chapter. The situation with the confession is resolved, there's a fun fight in the garage, and Burn-'Em-Up finally shows up with the new bus. Sweet.
22. The Silver Bullet (1935)* (SCPRSC Reliable Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by William Steiner and others. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
Tom Tyler plays a prospector who is appointed sheriff in a small town which is being terrorized by a gang of drunken cowboys. Slowed down by some awkward romance with the sub-par female lead this is still entertaining. Pretty standard plot with a couple of interesting differences and Tom Tyler continues to impress me as a b-western hero. 5.5/10

23. The Phantom of Santa Fe (1936)* (SCPRSC Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises. Produced by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises.
Set in old Mexico the supposedly villainous Hawk tries to recover gold artifacts stole from a nearby mission. In color with nice sets and costumes. The slow moving plot and creaky acting aren't offset by OK action. 4/10

24. Man With Two Lives (1942)* (SCPRSC Monogram Pictures Vol. 6)
Released by Monogram Pictures. Produced by A.W. Hackel Productions.
After a well liked son of a banker is brought back to life by an experimental medical procedure he has no memory of his former life and begins acting more and more like a brutal gangster. Nothing surprising here but very well done with some short but nice lab scenes. I didn't like the end though. 6/10

25. Spy Train (1943)* (SCPRSC Monogram Pictures Vol. 6)
Released by Monogram Pictures. Produced by Monogram Pictures.
A suitcase with a bomb, part of a Nazi plot to blow up Union Station, is accidentally put on a train. A reporter, photographer, and a publisher's daughter become involved. Disappointing film has a lot of moving a body and the suitcase between cabins and way too many trips to the club car. Very little suspense or intrigue. OK cast with Chick Chandler standing out as the somewhat cynical photographer. 4/10

May 17
26. Never Too Late (1935)* (SCPRSC Reliable Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Reliable Pictures Corporation. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
Silent film stuntman Richard Talmadge plays a police detective trying to bust a big time fence and recover a pearl necklace. Watching Talmadge do his stuff is fun and the best part of this otherwise lame movie. Talmadge is no actor but no one else in the film does much better. 4/10

May 18
27. Death From a Distance (1935)* (SCPRSC Chesterfield/Invincible Vol. 2)
Released by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation. Produced by Invincible Pictures.
A police detective (Russell Hopton) investigates a murder that took place during a lecture in a planetarium. He is 'helped' by a good looking reporter (Lola Lane). Very good mystery, one of the best films I've seen so far. Hopton and Lane are both solid as the leads and the rest of the cast does a good job. The story is well written with lots of suspects popping up and a nifty murder method is shown at the end. 7/10

May 19
28. Step On It (1936)* (SCPRSC Reliable Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Reliable Pictures Corporation and others. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
A state trooper (Richard Talmadge) is dismissed after complaints by a spoiled rich girl. He ends up working for her father's gasoline company trying to stop a series of hijackings. Much better than Never Too Late with a wider variety of stunts and a better script although I knew who the head bad guy was the instant he appeared on the screen. Talmadge still can't act very well but he's full of energy, never walking when he can run, jump, or climb. Some cool trucks and motorcycle action are icing on the cake. 5.5/10

May 20
29. False Pretenses (1935)* (Mill Creek Comedy Classics 100 Movie Pack Disk: 5)
Released by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation. Produced by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation.
An ex-waitress convinces a newly broke millionaire to introduce her to some of his society friends so she can marry for money. Lead Irene Ware is quite a looker and Russell Hopton is good as the guy she falls in love with. No outright laughs but it is pleasant and amusing. 5/10

May 21
30. The Gang's All Here (1941)* (Mill Creek Comedy Classics 100 Movie Pack Disk: 5)
Released by Monogram Pictures. Produced by Monogram Pictures.
Two buddies go to work for a trucking company which has been loosing trucks and drivers to a vicious hijacking gang. Frankie Darro (who also plays the kid sidekick in Burn-'Em-Up Barnes and Mantan Moreland in this action comedy. Again no belly laughs but watchable. Darro and Moreland made a series of pictures for Monogram and they have a pretty good chemistry. Keye Luke also has a good part. 5/10

May 22
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 8: The Death Crash (18:30)
Burn-'Em-Up's check bounces so the new bus is repossessed. In order to get some quick cash he gets work as a stunt man with a movie outfit. While he's doing some wing walking, the plane suddenly goes out of control and crashes. Good chapter.
31. The House of Secrets (1936)* (SCPRSC Chesterfield/Invincible Vol. 2)
Released by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation. Produced by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation.
An American inherits an English estate but when he goes to take a look he finds that it's occupied and is run off at gunpoint. The authorities see unwilling to do anything about it. The actual mystery is interesting but the script spends too much time going nowhere. The sets are fine and the actors are pretty good, especially the lovely Muriel Evans, but the film drags too much. 4.5/10

32. Missing Girls (1936)* (SCPRSC Chesterfield/Invincible Vol. 2)
Released by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation. Produced by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation.
A reporter does a series of articles about runaway girls in the big city and is jailed for protecting his sources. A senator is killed and his daughter disappears. The reporter picks up a clue to the assassins and when he gets out goes to the Feds. A gun battle results. Disjointed story with lots of unresolved plot lines but it is entertaining if a little bizarre. Murile Evans is just as easy on the eyes in this one. 5.5/10

May 23
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 9: The Man Higher Up (18:14)
]Burn-'Em-Up survives and decides to use his supposed death to lay a trap for the person behind all the trouble. It works but things go awry and action ensues. Comic relief Tony, the clumsy Italian mechanic, redeems himself in my eyes by showing a sadistic streak while guarding a prisoner. A pretty exciting chapter.
33. Fast Bullets (1936)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 3)
Released by Reliable Pictures Corporation. Produced by Reliable Pictures Corporation.
Ranger Tom Tyler infiltrates an outlaw gang with the help of a young member he convinces to go straight. Tyler makes a very good hero but even I couldn't believe he was a crook on the run. Still, there is lots of action, a pretty good story and the female lead does a great tap dancing number! Yowsuh! 6/10

34. Death Rides the Range (1939)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 3)
Released by Colony Pictures. Produced by Colony Pictures.
A cowboy (Ken Maynard) and his two partners get involved in murder, a land dispute, and foreign agents. Entertaining but Maynard doesn't strike me as heroic as say Tom Tyler. He's beefy enough but lacks presence, maybe due to his higher pitched voice. Julien Rivero, who plays Italian mechanic Tony in Burn-'Em-Up Barnes plays a Mexican sidekick here. 5/10

35. Sheriff of Sage Valley (1942)* (VCI Buster Crabbe Classic Westerns)
Released by Producers Releasing Corporation. Produced by Producers Releasing Corporation.
Billy the Kid is appointed sheriff to do battle with a gang lead by a man who looks almost exactly like Billy. Buster Crabbe plays both parts here and does a nice job as the villain. There's even a scene where they fight each other, also well done. Tex (Dave) O'Brien joins Al St. John as a third partner and he helps tone down Fuzzy's antics a bit. Lots of good action and a fast pace make this the best of the four westerns on the DVD. 6/10

May 24
36. Minstrel Man (1944)* (Mill Creek Classic Musicals 50 Movie Pack Disk: 12)
Released by Producers Releasing Corporation. Produced by Producers Releasing Corporation.
Popular black face performer Dixie Boy Johnson (Benny Fields) leaves his newborn daughter with friends and leaves town after his wife dies in childbirth. The world thinks he's dead but he is reunited with the girl after sixteen years when she stars in a jived up version of his most famous musical as Dixie Girl Johnson. Strange but very entertaining musical with good songs, some pretty elaborate numbers and a fast pace. Fields has a OK voice but kind of an old fashioned style. One of the jived up numbers has giant watermelons in the background. 7/10

37. East Side Kids (1940)* (Mill Creek Comedy Classics 100 Movie Pack Disk: 15)
Released by Monogram Pictures. Produced by Four-Bell Pictures, Inc.
A cop sets up a club for street kids while tracking down a counterfeit gang and trying to prove one of his old kid-gang members innocent of murder. Not a comedy at all but rather a straightforward well done crime film. Low budget version of The Dead End Kids later becomes the Bowery Boys. Lots of action and very exciting finish. 6/10

38. Port of Missing Girls (1938)* (SCPRSC Monogram Pictures Vol. 6)
Released by Monogram Pictures. Produced by Monogram Pictures.
A singer is tricked into helping with a murder. Fleeing from both the killer and the police she hides on a tramp steamer and eventually takes refuge in Hong Kong. Pretty good but it all works out as you expect. Harry Carey is fine as the crusty captain and Milburn Stone is OK as the love interest. There's also a nice shoot out to keep things interesting. 5.5/10

39. Condemned to Live (1935)* (SCPRSC Chesterfield/Invincible Vol. 2)
Released by Chesterfield Motion Picture Corporation. Produced by Invincible Pictures.
Ralph Morgan plays a kindly professor in a village where four people have their throats ripped out in two weeks. A couple of nice, eerie scenes but there are also places that drag. Some characters are well played while others are bland. Nice sets and an interesting take on vampirism but there are no surprises. 5/10

May 25
40. Tarzan and the Green Goddess (1937)* (SCPRSC Burroughs-Tarzan Pictures Vol. 1)
Released by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises. Produced by Burroughs-Tarzan Enterprises.
Tarzan (Herman Brix aka Bruce Bennett) helps an expedition return to civilization with a Mayan idol containing an ancient formula for a powerful explosive. Second feature film culled from the serial The New Adventures of Tarzan (1935). Filmed with many difficulties in Guatemala. Brix makes a great looking Tarzan and plays the role well. The scenes in The Dead City with eerie gong type sound effects are excellent as is the hurricane sequence on a sailing ship. Narration and text fill in some of the bigger story gaps but things are still a little choppy. Better than I thought it would be with pretty exciting action and some of the better fights I've seen this month. Beware of the savage rhinos and lions of Guatemala! 6/10

41. Corregidor (1943)* (Mill Creek Combat Classics 50 Movie Pack Disk: 11)
Released by Producers Releasing Corporation. Produced by Producers Releasing Corporation.
The fall of the Philippines PRC style, focusing on the lives and loves of group of doctors and nurses. Low budget is felt in limited battle scenes but stock footage is well used. Edgar Ulmer had a hand in the story. 5/10

42. The Lady From Chungking (1942)* (Mill Creek Combat Classics 50 Movie Pack Disk: 1)
Released by Producers Releasing Corporation. Produced by Producers Releasing Corporation.
The story of resistance fighters in a Chinese village during the Japanese invasion as they rescued downed Flying Tiger pilots and attempt to thwart the plans of a brutal Japanese general. Very well done. Anna Mae Wong is especially good as the leader of the guerrillas. 7/10

May 26
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 10: The Missing Link (18:27)
43. Corruption (1933)* (SCPRSC Imperial-Cameo Vol. 1)
Released by Imperial Distribution Corporation. Produced by William Berke Productions.
An honest mayor is framed on a morals charge and once he cleared of that he is convicted of murdering the political boss that put him in office. Quite a roller coaster, moves quickly and ends on a bit of a comic book note but in a good way. At the end, an alcoholic reporter gives one of the former political bosses the finger! Really. 6/10

May 27
44. The Flaming Signal (1933)* (SCPRSC Imperial-Cameo Vol. 1)
Released by Imperial Distribution Corporation. Produced by William Berke Productions.
A flyer and his wonder dog Flash are forced down near an isolated island in the Pacific. They become involved with a missionary, his daughter, and a brutal, alcoholic trader who eventually causes serious trouble with the natives. Kind of a strange mix including a ceremony to raise a dead high priest. Flash does most of the heavy lifting in the action scenes and even lights the signal fire that leads to rescue. 5/10

May 28
45. Murder By Television (1935)* (SCPRSC Imperial-Cameo Vol. 1)
Released by Imperial Distribution Corporation. Produced by Cameo Productions.
The inventor of a radical breakthrough in television technology is mysteriously killed while he is demonstrating the device. Slow moving and old fashioned at times but the equipment is cool looking and having Bela Lugosi in a picture always helps. The resolution is totally off the wall although it's not entirely a bad thing. 4.5/10

May 29
46. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 11: Surrounded! (18:46)
47. I Demand Payment (1938)* (SCPRSC Imperial-Cameo Vol. 1)
Released by Imperial Distribution Corporation. Produced by Cameo Productions.
A somewhat weak-willed young man gets involved with a loan shark racket and puts his lovely fiancee in danger. An interesting gangster film with some good action scenes and a dramatic conclusion. Nothing really out of the ordinary here and the acting was a bit melodramatic at times but the story drew me in. 5.5/10

May 30
xx. Burn-'Em-Up Barnes (1934)* Chapter 12: The Fatal Whisper (15:46)
An entertaining, action packed serial. A couple early chapters were a little tedious but starting with Chapter 8 it was a thrill a minute. The good guys were dim witted at times and when they managed to come up with a plan, the baddies often foiled it with dumb luck. There were some nifty 1930's vehicles scattered throughout. 5/10
48. Feud of the Range (1939)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 4)
Released by Metropolitan Pictures. Produced by Metropolitan Pictures.
A dishonest land speculator starts a range war so he can buy land cheap to sell to the railroad. Bob Steele is a lean and competent hero and sidekick Happy (Budd Buster) is a refreshing change, crabby and effective. Some stock footage poorly used but lots of action and a good story. 6/10

49. Frontier Justice (1936)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 4)
Released by First Division. Produced by Diversion Pictures.
It's sheep men vs. cattle ranchers when Hoot Gibson plays the son of a rancher who returns home after his father is committed to an asylum for shooting a sheep! Gibson looks like an unlikely hero and plays the fool well but the joke is usually on the bad guys. Good action and very enjoyable. 6/10

50. Frontier Scout (1938)* (Mill Creek Western Collection 250 Movie Pack Disk: 4)
Released by Grand National Pictures. Produced by Fine Arts Film Company.
After working as a scout for General Grant during the Civil War, Wild Bill Hickok (George Houston) becomes a Marshall and is sent to investigate the disappearance of thousands of head of cattle. Al St. John is good as sidekick Whiney and has a short but funny scene with Mantan Moreland. Nothing special but fun and full of action. 5/10

End of list. Took a challenge break on May 31.

Got part 1 on YouTube, but part 2 is muted due to copyright infringements. There was another 14 minute clip of the beginning of part 2, but that was it. Maggie was only in part 1 as the girlfriend left behind anyway, so that's that...

Re: The Sixth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge - May 1-31, 2015 **List Thread**

Gobear's Musical Challenge

First-Time Viewing: 3 | Blu-Ray: 6 | DVD: 11 | TV: 3 | Streaming: 5 | Commentaries Listened To:

May 1
1. The Last Five Years (2015)-Streaming
Anna Kendrick's voice is a treasure--she captures the nuances of a song like nobody else of her generation. TLFY is a melancholy tale of a dying relationship told from end to beginning by Kendrick's character and from beginning to end by Jeremy Jackson as Jamie. It's a testament to the creative team and the performers that this show is such a pure, honest depiction of the lifecycle of love.

May 2
2. Rent (2005)-DVD
Rent works better on stage as a sung-through musical than on film, although the orchestration and singing are first-rate. The conceits in a song like "Over The Moon", where the theatre audience is working with Maureen, just falls flat on screen. Also, changing the recitative moments into dialogue really doesn't work. Still, forget regret or life is yours to miss.
3. Jersey Boys (2014)-TV
I haven't seen the stage production, but it has to be an improvement over this lugubrious mess. Clint Eastwood has no idea how to direct a musical.
4. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)-DVD
One of my all-time favorite musicals with an important message of self-respect and being your authentic self. Last month Mr. Gobear and I saw John Cameron Mitchell play Hedwig in NYC at the Belasco Theater, and it was magical.

May 3
5. Hair (1979)-Blu-Ray
Probably the best movie musical of the 1970s. Even though this is a 1970s version of a 1960s hippie musical, it doesn't feel dated at all.
6. Into The Woods (2014)-Blu-Ray
Stephen Sondheim's intricate melodies and complex lyrics can be difficult to translate well to the big screen, but Rob Marshall delivered a fairly faithful version of one of Sondheim's masterpieces. Meryl Streep was fantastic as the Witch and Emily Blunt's performance as the Baker's Wife is a revelation, and of course Anna Kendrick knocks "On the Steps of the Palace" out of the park.
7. Abba: The Movie (1977)-TV
I had no idea this existed, an ABBA concert film, directed by Lasse Hallström, no less! As much as I enjoy ABBA, I found the film disappointing, mostly due to the inclusion of a wholly unnecessary plot device involving a clueless DJ jetting around Australia as he tries to get an interview with the group. After checking out the cast on IMDB, I found out the actor playing the DJ is currently serving time in an Australian prison for child molestation. Not surprised.

May 4
8. The Producers (2005)-DVD
Too much fidelity to a stage production can kill a movie, too. The film recreates the Broadway production faithfully, but what works on stage falls flat on screen.

May 6
9. Gypsy (1962)-Blu-Ray
Although I would have preferred to see the original Mama Rose, Ethel Merman, reprise the the role, Roz Russell brings a real life force and undercurrent of anger to Rose as a woman clawing her way into show business vicariously through her daughters.

May 7
10. Li'l Abner (1959)-DVD
A forgotten musical based on a long-extinct comic strip, but still a fun movie. Very few of the songs are memorable tunes, but the lyrics are hilarious and more than a little risque. Li'l Abner is a terrifically entertaining lost gem, and there's some sensational beefcake towards the end.
11. Jerry Springer: The Opera (2005)-DVD
An absolutely hilarious and scandalously off-color musical based on the notorious talk show host. The second act, set in the afterlife where Jerry interviews Jesus, Satan, Adam, Eve, and God created such a furore among fundamentalist nitwits in the UK that the show was banned. It's a shame becauee the musical really has a fantastic score and is very similar in tone to The Book of Mormon.

May 8
12. Cléopâtre, la Dernière Reine d'Égypte (2009)-Blu-Ray
I really love the music, although the staging is strange. The very first number, "Tout sera strategeme", when Cleopatra is smuggled in a rug into Caesar's presence, is performed in a Bollywood style with dancing Anubises backing up Cleopatra.

May 9
13. Dreamgirls (2006)-Blu-ray
About as perfect a translation of a show from stage to screen as you could ask for. Eddie Murphy's performance is fantastic, a reminder of his talent that he so rarely uses these days.
14. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (2008)-DVD
Right in the feels.
15. The King and I (1956)-DVD
I'm looking forward to seeing the new Broadway production with Kelli O'Hara and Ken Watanabe. Yul Brynner is a tough act to follow, because he is the definitive King of Siam.

May 11
16. The Blues Brothers (1980)-DVD
I haven't watched this in years, so it is interesting to review it with older, yet fresher, eyes. For me, the stars of the show aren't Aykroyd or Belushi, whose schtick seems tired, but the classic stars in guest roles: James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, and Booker T and the MGs who play the Blues Brothers band.

May 12
17. Evita (1996)-Blu-Ray
The production values are sumptuous, and the supporting cast is terrific; the weak link here is Madonna. She just doesn't have the acting chops to pull off playing the Rainbow of Argentina, so the movie is merely good when it could have been great if Patti Lupone or Meryl Streep had been cast.

May 13
18. Across the Universe (2007)-DVD
Julie Taymor has a wondrously visual imagination, but her storytelling skills are lacking. She's trying to interpret the 60s through the Beatles catalog, but her narrative doesn't hold together. Hair covered the same territory better.
19. Show Boat (1936)-DVD-R
The best of the 3 screen versions of the Hammerstein/Kern masterpiece, and easily the best musical of the 1930s.
20. The Rutles: All You Need is Cash (1978)-Streaming
A Pythonesque parody of Beatlemania which doesn't really stand up, although Neal Innes's musical pastiches are brilliant evocations of Beatles tunes.

May 14
21. High Society (1956)-TV
Although this musical remake of The Philadelphia Story has a fantastic cast and a terrific Cole Porter score, it's just a light entertainment and largely forgettable.
22. Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1973)-Streaming
A snapshot of Bowie at the first peak in his career when he zoomed to superstardom on the strength of the eponymous album, his fifth. Bowie was hardly the first genderbending rock and roll artist (that would be Little Richard), but he, along with Alice Cooper pioneered the concept of rock concert as a theatrical performance. Moreover, Bowie's androgyny and purported bisexuality inspired generations of young gay rockers to be loud, queer, and proud.
23. Stop Making Sense (1984)-Streaming
One of the best concert films ever made, SMS captures Talking Heads at the zenith of their fame. Jonathan Demme's direction gives the film an immersive that captures the concert experience. I also really love the slow buildup: David Byrne comes out and plays "Psycho Killer"solo, then Tina joins hm for "Heaven" and then Jerry and Chris show up, and the band is complete.

May 15
24. Pitch Perfect (2012)-DVD
The third Anna Kendrick film I've watched for this challenge. It's aca-awesome. I'm looking forward to catching #2 this weekend.

May 16
25. The First Nudie Musical (1976)-Streaming
A staple of the midnight movie circuit back in the 70s, TFNM has a sort of Judy and Mickey feel as the protagnonist decides to make a pornographic musical to save his failing studio.
26. Naked Boys Singing (2007)-Streaming
The title delivers--these are naked boys who sing. It's a definitely gay, campy good time, although the nudity ceases to be interesting after the first 5 minutes.

May 17
27. 42nd Street (1933)-DVD
The original Broadway backstage story.
28. Fame (1980)-Blu-Ray
It seems ironic that only a couple of the kids in Fame actually achieved fame, and even then it was shortlived. WEHT to Irene Cara? Paul McCrone, who played the ginger gay kid, has the most acting credits, including a long run on ER until his character was killed in a helicopter accident.

May 19
29. Velvet Goldmine (1998)-DVD
The background mystery about a pop star who fakes his death is nonsensical, but I love Todd Haynes's approach to the coming of age of gay youth during the glam era, featuring barely disguised David Bowie and Iggy Pop clones
30. Flamenco (1995)-Streaming
The art of flamenco-dance, music, singing and the rhythm of clapping palms--is on full display in this exhilarating documentary from Carlos Saura.

May 21
31. The Point (1971)-Streaming
It's such a shame that Harry Nilsson's music has largely been forgotten. He's one of my favorite pop performers from the 1960s-70s, and some of his best songs are in The Point, a terrific counter-cultural parable about a baby with a round head being born in a town of pointy-headed people. The moral, of course, is that everyone has a point. If you have children or grandchildren or nieces and nephews, you really need to buy them a copy of this wonderful film.

May 22
32. Captain EO (1986)-Streaming
I never got around to seeing this at the Disney parks, so I missed the full impact of the 3-D presentation. Still, it's a fun hybrid of Jim Henson's Muppets and Michael Jackson at the height of his talents.
33. The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade (1967)-Streaming
Yes, it's a musical, as well as a searing examination of the subversion of revolution, the depths of human evil, and mental illness. Criterion seriously needs to release this on Blu-Ray.
34. Hairspray (2007)-DVD
How many musicals address integration and hair styles? Hairspray is such an exuberant, feel-good musical with a socially conscious heart. Sadly, the riots in Baltimore show we've got a long way to go to reach true racial integration in the US. "There's a dream, yeah, in the future/ there's a struggle that we have yet to win/ Use that pride in our hearts 'to lift us up to tomorrow/ 'Cause just to sit still would be a sin."

May 23
35. Urgh: A Music War (1981)-DVD-R
I first saw this on USA's "Night Flight" (I'm dating myself) years ago. It's a snapshot of the New Wave pop movement in 1980, when i was a college kid popgoing my heart out. The sad realization about this music, after 35 years, is that a lot of the acts just aren't that good.
36. The Gospel at Colonus (1985)-DVD-R
There is something about gospel that can make an atheist like me get up and dance.

May 24
37. Notre Dame de Paris (1999)-Streaming
As much as I love French musicals, they lack focus. They are clearly staged for a stadium, not a theater, so it's difficult to focus n the performance and the emotion of the scene. Still, I am hopelessly in love with Garou, who plays Quasimodo.
38. Mozart L'Opera Rock (2009)-Streaming Apparently this show was very popular in Europe, and I certainly love the score, but the music has zero relation to Mozart's work. Still, Michelangelo Loconte is adorable.

May 28
39. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Once More With Feeling" (2001)-DVD
Joss's first musical before Doctor Horrible. It's a pity most of the cast couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, with the exceptions of Tara and Giles.
40. Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny (2006)-DVD
I love the D, so this film, ridiculous as it is, is like comfort food. The film starts out like a rock opera; it would have been so cool if the whole movie had been sung through.

May 29
41. Reefer Madness (2005)-DVD
First shown on Showtime, this musical adaptation of the drug panic classic was first produced as on stage in LA. The music is terrific, featuring a pre-Frozen Kristin Bell.

42. Were The World Mine (2008)-Streaming
A gay fantasy about unrequited love, in which a bullied gay high school boy discovers a recipe for a love potion in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and tunes his homophobic community into a hotbed of same-sex romance.
43. Lisztomania (1975)-DVD-R
Ken Russell is a highly uneven director, and Lisztomania is simultaneously one of his worst, and yet most interesting, films. Roger Daltrey portrays Liszt, accurately, as the equivalent of a rock star in 19th-century Europe. Russell creates a symbolic portrait of the artist as pop idol, and bludgeons the viewer with cinematic excess to make his point.

44. Victor/ Victoria (1982)-DVD
It was pretty brave of Blake Edwards to make a pro-gay musical during the advent of the AIDS crisis, when gay was becoming unfabulous. Julie Andrews and Robert Preston are fantastic in this.
45. Pink Floyd's The Wall (1982)-DVD
I needed to throw in some classic rock. The film is more of an extended MTV video (back when MTV showed videos).
46. Xanadu (1980)-DVD
Pride season is here, so it's time to drag out some ultra-campy trash.
47. Zero Patience (1993)-DVD
Made on a shoestring, Zero Patience looks like a student film, but it has some catchy songs and at the time made some good points about footdragging on finding effective HIV medications and the scapegoating of Patient Zero, the French Canadian flight attendant that the press pinned for the introduction of HIV to North America.
