Historical Film Challenge (War, Westerns, Period, Sports, Biographical)***LIST THREAD

DVD TALK Presents

The First Annual Historical Film Challenge

June 1-June 30, 2010. If you like, you may start watching War Movies early on May 31, Memorial Day.

List and rules thread only. Discussion is Here.

This is a challenge to watch many Historical Films and TV shows in the month of June.

Mini-series count for the number of "nights" it intended to air. Six Episodes per serial count as an entry. Two "Hour" long TV shows equals a feature as well as Four "half hour" shows

War Films. A film genre concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. At times war films focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles. Their stories may be fiction, based on history, docudrama or, occasionally, biographical. The film can depict actual battle or just be associated with a war. For example, Casablanca does not depict any battles, but it takes place with the backdrop of WWII.

WIKI link for War Films.

This also includes television shows about war, such as Band of Brothers, the Pacific and situation comedies such as MASH and Hogan's Heroes. Documentaries such as those on History Channel or BBC are also allowed.

Westerns. Westerns are devoted to telling stories set primarily in the later half of the 19th century in what became the Western United States (known as the American Old West or Wild West), but also in Western Canada, Mexico (The Wild Bunch, Vera Cruz), Alaska (The Far Country, North to Alaska) and even Australia (Quigley Down Under, The Proposition). Some Westerns are set as early as the Battle of the Alamo in 1836 but most are set between the end of the American Civil War and the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890, though there are several "late Westerns" (e.g., The Wild Bunch and 100 Rifles) set as late as the Mexican Revolution in 1913. In the 1930s many B-Westerns were set in the present.

All Westerns are allowed, including TV shows, such as Gunsmoke or Brisco County and theatrical serials such as those with Tom Mix.

Biographical Films. A film that dramatizes the life of an actual person or people. They differ from films “based on a true story” or “historical films” in that they attempt to comprehensively tell a person’s life story or at least the most historically important years of their lives. Documentaries and TV Movies are allowed.

Period Films. A period piece is a work set in a particular era. This informal term covers all countries, all periods and all genres. It may be as long and general as the medieval era or as limited as one decade—the Roaring Twenties, for example. Most commonly seen in film. A period piece movie is also referred to as a costume drama. A costume drama is a period piece in which elaborate costumes, sets and properties are featured in order to capture the ambiance of a particular era.

The most common type of costume drama is the historical costume drama, both on stage and in movies. This category includes Barry Lyndon, Braveheart, From Hell, and Robin Hood. Films that are set in the 1930s and 1940s, such as Last Man Standing, may also be placed in this category. Other examples include Marie Antoinette, Middlemarch, and Pride and Prejudice.

For the purposes of this challenge, we are defining this as films produced in one era but set in an earlier era. WIKI Link WIKI Link 2

Sports Films. These are films that ones that revolve around a sport. These can be Biographical films about a particular player or team or completely fictional as long as it involves sports. Why sports? Well, sports are a proxy for war. They are also recorded as manufactured historical events. Sports stars become historical figures within their idiom and stats are kept and obsessed over as much as any History tome. Plus, think of it like recess. We're allowed to have a purely fun entry.WIKI Link

Documentaries. Documentaries are allowed provided they are about people or historical events or otherwise fit into the accepted categories. So, War docs, Western Docs, History Docs, Sports Docs and Biographical Docs are allowed. In addition, Errol Morris type docs, such as Gates of Heaven or Thin Blue Line and even Michael Moore Docs are allowed. Nature docs, such as March of the Penguins are not in the realm of this challenge.

WILD CARDS. Some films are so culturally significant that they are not only set in the time they were made but are truly representative of that time. Films like Rebel Without a Cause, Easy Rider, Saturday Night Fever were contemporary when they were made, but more than other movies they truly define their era. There's no way to really quantify it, you just have to know it or feel it. Welcome our old friend the Wild Card for such films. Although this challenge really doesn't have a set goal, to prevent abuse the Wild Card will be limited to 6. Not that any will ever be turned down, as this selection will be your opinion of what film defines the era, but it should be understood that you are making a conscious choice rather than just grabbing an old film off the unwatched pile.

Here's a great link to Historical films, thanks to BuddhaWake. http://www.vernonjohns.org/snuffy1186/movies.html

Please number your lists and have fun.

Re: Historical Film Challenge (War, Westerns, Period, Sports, Biographical)***LIST TH

Goal: 30

* = First Time Viewing
DVD
Blu-ray
HD DVD

May 31
01. Heartbreak Ridge (1986)* Classic Eastwood at his best. I loved it!!! 8/10
02. 1941 (1979)* Disappointed in this one. Belushi was great as usual, but he was the only highlight. 4/10

June 1
03. Joe Kidd (1972)* You're going to see a lot of Eastwood on my list for this challenge. Not his best, but still enjoyable. 6/10

June 2
04. High Plains Drifter (1973)* Western with a bit of a supernatural twist. Very good. 7/10

June 3
05. Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)* Loved it!!! 8/10

June 5
06. We Were Soldiers (2002)* Very good story of the first American battle in Vietnam. Seemed very realistic. 7/10
07a. Mantle: The Definitive Story of Mickey Mantle (2005)* Pretty good documentary on The Mick. 6/10

June 6
07b. Where Have You Gone Joe DiMaggio? (1997)* Another good documentary of Joe DiMaggio. I knew he was considered a bit of an enigma, but I never knew the extent of it. 6/10
08. Casualties of War (1989)* Good performances by Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox highlight this, difficult to watch at times, Vietnam war story. 6/10
09. John Adams: Join or Die* / John Adams: Independence*

June 7
10. John Adams: Don't Tread on Me* / John Adams: Reunion*
11a. John Adams: Unite or Die*

June 8
11b. John Adams: Unnecessary War*
12a. John Adams: Peacefield* Good miniseries, but it could have been great had it been a couple of episodes longer. 7/10
12b. Michael Jordan to the Max (2000)* Good documentary on MJ following his final championship in Chicago. 6/10

June 9
13. Bandidas (2006)* Better than I expected. How can you not like a film with Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek and a tic tac toe playing horse? 5/10

June 14
14. 3:10 to Yuma (2007)* Loved this one, but I do seem to like just about anything Russell Crowe is in. Makes me want to see the original. 8/10

June 15
15. Unforgiven (1992)* Another classic that I just never got around to watching. That's what I love about these challenges; they motivate me to watch the stuff I otherwise keep putting off. 9/10

June 16
16. Appaloosa (2008)* Good, but I think I may have liked it better had I not watched it immediately after watching Unforgiven and 3:10 to Yuma. Doesn't quite measure up to those two. 6/10

June 17
17. Memphis Belle (1990)* Decent movie, has some tense moments, but terrible non-anamorphic presentation. Could really use an upgrade. 6/10

June 19
18. Kingdom of Heaven (2005)* WOW!!! I loved it. Wish I could have seen it on the big screen. 8/10

June 20
19. The Searchers (1956)* Classic John Wayne, not much more to be said about it. 7/10
20. Ned Kelly (2003)* Pretty good. Not sure how historically accurate it is, but it is entertaining. 6/10
21. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)* I was absolutely mesmerized by this. I had put off watching it for so long because of its length and I had heard is was extremely slow, but I found it to be completely enthralling. 9/10

June 21
22. Hamburger Hill (1987)* I was a little disappointed in this one. Definitely the weakest of the Vietnam films I've watched for this challenge. 4/10
23. Grizzly Man (2005)* Interesting documentary on Timothy Treadwell who lived in the Alaskan wild with Grizzly bears for thirteen summers before being killed and eaten by one!!! 7/10

June 22
24. Pale Rider (1985)* Another great Eastwood Western. This challenge has reconfirmed my preference of Eastwood over John Wayne. 8/10
25. The Red Badge of Courage (1951)* Pretty good Civil War story starring Audie Murphy as a reluctant soldier. 6/10

June 23
26. A Mighty Heart (2007)* Excellent movie about the Daniel Pearl kidnapping in the early days of the Afgan war. Good performance by Angelina Jolie as his wife. Somewhat surprised she didn't receive an Oscar nomination for this. 7/10

June 24
27. Flyboys (2006)* Pretty good story following several people who went to France to enlist as pilots before the US involvement in WWI. Entertaining, but a little on the long side. 6/10

June 27
28. Enemy at the Gates (2001)* Excellent WWII sniper film about the battle of Stalingrad. Ed Harris really stands out, but Jude Law turned in a good performance as well. 8/10

June 28
29. 300 (2007)* Loved it; however, it seemed to take itself a little too serious at times. 7/10

June 29
30. The Doors (1991)* Jim Morrison was one messed-up, weird dude!!! 6/10

June 30
31. The Proposition (2005)* WOW!!! I loved this one. Great Australian western. If you haven't seen it, do youself a favor and watch it now!!! 8/10

Darth Maher's NON-List

Fail!

I watched the first 30 minutes or so of All Quiet On The Western Front around the beginning of the month. Tired... had to go to bed. Never got back to it... or anything else for the challenge for that matter.

In fact, I didn't really watch much of anything this month. I started a new job on 6/1. It's manual labor in a hot warehouse. When I get home, I usually just veg out with whatever the wife or kids are watching.

Maybe next year.

Re: Historical Film Challenge (War, Westerns, Period, Sports, Biographical)***LIST TH

06/01
(1) The White Buffalo- 1977- Charles Bronson, Jack Warden. Wild Bill Hichcock (Bronson) hunts a white buffalo that he see's in his dreams. He battles Crazy Horse for the right to slay the buffalo.
Cheesy white buffalo that looks like one of those old horse rides that they had outside of the supermarket for 10c a ride. I always enjoyed the movie though 8/10

06/02
(2) Geronimo- An American Legend-(1993) Jason Patrick, Wes Studi. Incredible movie about the history of the Arizona Apache Wars of the late 1800's and of course, Geronimo. I have enjoyed this movie many times. 9/10

06/03
(3) High Noon (1952) Gary Cooper. An old time classic that has that classic old time Western feel.
Excellent movie about a Marshall being targeted by a band of outlaws. This is what old time classic westerns are all about. 10/10

06/04
(4) Battle of the Warriors Andy Lau. in 378 B.C. two Asian kingdoms battle for the right to conqueror a fort / city. Ok, wasn't great, but ok. 7/10

06/10
(5) Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957) Kirk Douglas, Burt lancaster. Classic film about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday taking on ranchers that results in the classic gunfight at the corral. 10/10

06/12
(6) She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949) John Wayne Film about the last few days of a retiring Calvary Captan. Ok, nothing really outstanding. 8/10

06/13
(7) Shutter Island (2010) Leonardo DeCaprio. Weird movie surrounding a sanatarium for the crimanily insane with a twisted ending. 8/10
(8) Full Metal Jacket (1987) Matthew Modine, Lee Emery. Incredible film that starts out in boot camp and follows a few of the graduating soldiers in the Viet Nam War. 10/10

06/14
(9) Blazing Saddles (1974) Clevon Little, Gene Wilder. Holy Underwear! Mel Brooks spoof on High Plains Drifter excellent classic comedy western. I'm giving this a 9 and not a 10 because of the ending when they move off set to a movie theatre which I didn't care for 9/10

06/15
(10) Broken Arrow (1950) Jimmy Stewart, Jeff Chandler. One of my all-time favorites. Movie concerning the history of Arizona and the Apache Indian Wars of 1870. 9/10

06/16
(11) Winchester'73 (1950) Jimmy Stewart. Seems like this movie is on a lot of other peoples lists. Story about a Winchester Rifle that is won in a shooting contest and travels from person to person in the west, even finds itself in the hands of an indian chief ( Rock Hudson?) for a short period of time.
ok, not bad, interesting concept for a movie 7.5/10

06/17
(12) Ambush Bay (1966) Hugh O'Brian, Mickey Rooney. A group of commandos go to an Island in the Pacific to launch a mission against the Japanese. Pretty good movie, I have watched this now and then over the years and it has been a multiple viewing experience over the years. 8/10

06/22
(13) No Time for Sergents Andy Griffith. Story about a hillbilly who joins the army and the tough times that he has along with his disgusted drill sergent. It took a few viewings of this to warm up to it, I wasn't thrilled with this the first time I watched it, but it's growing on me a bit. 7/10

06/24
(14) Black Robe (1991) Excellent account of a Jesuit priest and his mission to a Huron camp in the 1600's. He fields a team of local Indians as guides who endure hostile Indian attacks and daily troubles of the trip. 10/10
(15) A Few Dollars More (1965) Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef. Sequel to Fistful of Dollars. Two bounty hunters partner up for a big payday. I like this better than the original movie. Great Leone soundtrack. 9/10

06/25
(16) Enemy at the Gates (2001) Jude Law. Story about competition between two snipers during WWII. One from Russia and one from Germany. 9/10

06/27
(17) Love and Death (1975) Woody Allen, Diane Keaton. Allen stars as Boris, a Russian who is drafted to fight against the French and Napoleon. As the second war against the French starts Boris and Sonja ( Keaton ) plot to kill Napoleon. 7/10

06/28
(18) The 300 Spartans (1961) Richard Egan. Original movie about the Battle of Thermopalyae.
Slow moving in the beginning, but packs a punch at the end. 8/10

06/29
(19) War Arrow (1953) Jeff Chandler, Maureen O'Harah. Old time, nothing fancy, Calvary vs. Indians yarn about a Calvary Major who trains Seminoles to fight Kiowas. This has been a repeatable DVD watch for me over the years. 8/10

06/30
(20) The Junction Boys (2002) Tom Berringer. ESPN movie about Bear Bryant and his first year at Texas A&M in 1954 when he moved his football camp to Junction, Texas and what happened there. 8/10
(21) Custers Last Stand. from the History International Channel. I just stumbled upon this while flipping through the channels. Documentary involving the events surrounding the famous Battle of the Little Big Horn. 8.5/10

5/31 Bonus Day
01. Warhead (1977)* (Mill Creek War Classics 50 Movie Pack)
Members of the Palestinian Liberation Army clash with an Israeli army patrol over a lost experimental nuclear device. The American colonel sent to disarm it is caught in the middle. Some good desert battles involving jeeps, armored cars and trucks. Plot is moved along mainly by bad decisions on both sides. 6/10
02. To Hell and Back (1955)
The story of the military career of the WW2 hero with Audie Murphy playing himself. Sentimental and episodic but very entertaining. Well done battle scenes are placed in the context of the Allies' campaigns in Italy and southern France. Good cast. 8/10
03. Corvette K-225 (1943)
Patriotic story of a Canadian escort vessel from construction through the end of her first convoy mission in the North Atlantic. Great cast has Randolph Scott as the seasoned captain and many western and serial sidekicks as crew members. Concludes with a very exciting battle between the ship and two enemy submarines. 7/10

6/01
04. The Steel Helmet (1951) (Eclipse Series 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller)
Intense and gritty salute to the American foot soldier set in the Korean war. Gene Evans is excellent as the cynical, war weary lead. The low budget is generally not an issue except in the final attack where it seems that each side is fighting in a different battle. 7/10
05. Destination Gobi (1953)
Story of US naval staff of a weather station in the Gobi desert getting help from Mongols while being pursued by Japanese near the end of WW2. OK action/adventure movie supposedly based on a true incident. I remember liking this more when I was a kid. 5/10

6/02
06. They Were Expendable (1945) (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Story of a PT boat squadron from just before Pearl Harbor to the fall of the Philippines. Not a lot of battle scenes, the focus is more on the people, fortunately without most of the Hollywood GI stereotypes. Well acted, long but never uninteresting. 7/10

6/04
07. The Long Voyage Home (1940)* (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Story about the crew of a tramp steamer crossing the Atlantic with ammunition for England during the early part of WW2. Not really a war movie in the usual sense but a drama set in war time. Nicely acted, almost lyrical in spots. 8/10

6/05
08. Pork Chop Hill (1959)
Intense, well made film highlights both the heroism and stupidity of war. Detailed account of a battle to take and then hold an insignificant hill near the end of the Korean War. Excellent performances and a solid script. 10/10
09. Battleground (1949)
Good movie about the 101st Airborne Division's defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. Fine cast with James Whitmore and Marshall Thompson as standouts. The snow/fog scenes were very well done as were all the battles. Perhaps a bit corny at times. 8/10

6/06
10. D-Day the Sixth of June (1956)*
For a movie with this name there is little time spent on D-Day. What is there concerns a commando raid which took place a couple of hours before the main landings. Most of the film tells the back story of how two officers on the raid fell in love with the same woman. Although not the best way to commemorate the day its not at all a bad movie. The cast is good and the action scenes were well done. 6/10
11. Son of Fury: The Story of Benjamin Blake (1942)* (Tyrone Power Collection)
Set in the 19th century the story of a bastard son of a wealthy family who goes to the South Pacific to make his fortune so he can prove himself the legitimate heir. All around good cast and entertaining but nothing special. A few plot points are a bit silly. Gene Tierney was darned cute though. 5/10

6/07
12. Wooden Crosses (1932)* (Eclipse Series 4: Raymond Bernard)
Grim, powerful account of a French infantry squadron in WW1. Good acting, interesting camera work and well done, realistic, brutal large scale battles. The end is particularly moving. Will be worth watching again. 8/10

6/08
13. Destry Rides Again (1939) (James Stewart The Western Collection)
Fun comedy western with James Stewart as a mild mannered deputy who brings law and order to a frontier town using wits instead of gun play - for the most part. Good cast although I still think Dietrich was an odd choice. The classic Stewart charm shines in this classic Hollywood production. Very entertaining. 7/10

6/09
14. Prelude to War (1942)*
First of the Frank Capra directed Why We Fight series examines the differences between free democracies and totalitarian states. Also covers Italy's conquest of Ethiopia and Japan's attacks on Manchuria and then the rest of China. Interesting footage but biased presentation. 5/10

6/10
15. Stagecoach (1939) (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Haven't seen this for quite a few years and I liked it better than I remembered. A good basic idea, lots of well done action and all the main characters have some depth. 8/10

6/11
16. I Shot Jesse James (1949)* (Eclipse Series 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller)
Interesting picture about what happened to the man who shot Jesse after the deed. There are some nice noirish touches like the black backgrounds in the medium shots during the final showdown but not everything works. Events sometimes just seem to come out of nowhere just to keep things moving. 6/10

6/12
17. Winchester '73 (1950)* (James Stewart The Western Collection)
Tense, exciting story of revenge told by following one special rifle as it changes hands. James Stewart is excellent as the driven seeker who sometimes literally shakes with rage. The rest of the cast is just as good as is the cinematography and direction. The final shootout is especially outstanding with only the sound of the wind as background. 9/10
18. Sink the Bismark (1960)
Not quite as good as I remembered but still a fine movie. I like the strategy sessions in the war room. Good acting and nice miniature work (which I had not recalled) supervised by one of the Lydecker brothers who also worked in Republic serials and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Miniatures well integrated with actual battle footage. 7/10

6/13
19. The Furies (1950)*
Powerful story of conflict between a cattle baron and his daughter who have an uncomfortably close relationship. Well acted but issues are resolved too easily. Still quite absorbing. 7.5/10
20. Prince of Foxes (1949)* (Tyrone Power Collection)
Tyrone Power plays a captain of Cesare Borgia who turns on him and helps defend a small kingdom. Filmed in Italy using many historic buildings, this is quite a lush production. Orson Wells is great as Borgia dripping menace with every line. Not a lot of action. 6/10

6/14
21. Fort Apache (1948) (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Big, classic story of by the book colonel who takes command of a rag tag frontier fort. His quest for glory results in disaster but creates a legend. Strong cast, magnificent settings. I can't always connect with some of Ford's characters but parts of this movie do linger in memory. 7.5/10

6/15
22. Bat Masterson:No title/ Stories of the Century:"Little Britches"/ Stories of the Century:"Nate Champion"/ The Adventures of Kit Carson:"Border Corsairs" all *
Tales of the Century was the winner here. The leads were often wooden but the rest of the cast was fine and there were lots of good action sequences.

6/18
23. The Baron of Arizona (1950)* (Eclipse Series 5: The First Films of Samuel Fuller)
A con man tries to swindle the US government out of the territory of Arizona. All the elements work well. Price is perfect and the Baron and the other actors play their roles well. The story is interesting and different. Nice cinematography and direction. 8/10
24. For a Few Dollars More (1965)* (The Sergio Leone Anthology)
Fun, but a bit too long for its own good. Eastwood/Van Cleef relationship is the best part. The outlaws are quirky and the action is satisfying but seems a little too similar to A Fistful of Dollars. 7/10

6/19
25. Bend of the River (1952)* (James Stewart The Western Collection)
Not in OAR - disappointing. Still, an excellent western. It starts out as a typical wagon train movie but turns into a darker story of betrayal, revenge and redemption. 8/10
26. Captain From Castile (1947)* (Tyrone Power Collection)
Typical Hollywood historical account or Cortez's march through Mexico. The story focuses on a nobleman fleeing from the Inquisition who becomes a captain for Cortez. Few surprises but quite well done and entertaining. Despite the length we never get to see the end of the expedition. 7/10

6/21
27. 3 Godfathers (1949)* (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Three outlaws try to save an newborn from the harsh rigors of the desert. Better than I thought it would be. Predictably sentimental ending but grimmer in spots than I expected. Great use of desert scenery. 6/10

6/22
28. The Rare Breed (1966)* (James Stewart The Western Collection)
Often lighthearted story of the introduction of Hereford cattle into Texas. James Stewart does his usual good job and Brain Keith has his moments but overall its nothing special. 5/10

6/23
29. Duck, You Sucker (1972)* (The Sergio Leone Anthology)
A wild ride through the Mexican Revolution. Good characters and fine action scenes. Rod Steiger is particularly good although at times his accent just doesn't work for me. 7/10

6/24
30. Night Passage (1957)* (James Stewart The Western Collection)
James Stewart plays a disgraced railroad troubleshooter out to redeem himself. Standard stuff but well done with a solid cast and plot that never drags. 6/10

6/25
31. The Wings of Eagles (1957)* (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
The story of Frank Wead, early naval air pioneer and writer. Some aspects of the Ford style just annoy me in his lesser films. This is one of those. 5/10

6/26
32. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1967) (The Sergio Leone Anthology)
Is this the best spaghetti western ever? It may be. 8/10
33. The Black Rose (1950)* (Tyrone Power Collection)
Tyrone Power leaves Norman England to find his fortune in Cathay. Colorful, sumptuous adventure is very entertaining. A silly love story slows things down a bit but its still worth watching. 7/10

6/27
34. Les Miserables (1934)* (Eclipse Series 4: Raymond Bernard)
Superb telling of the story with outstanding camera work and music. Harry Baur is excellent as Jean Valjean. Almost five hours and I couldn't stop watching. 10/10
35. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949) (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
A great movie up to a point but the end is contrived and a bit too pat which disperses some to the emotion and tension that had been building. Wayne was very good and most of the picture gave a nice feeling for life in the cavalry and the grandeur of the west. 8/10

6/28
36. The Searchers (1956)* (John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection)
Wonderfully directed. There's a back story that's only implied but is clear for the most part. Darker than the other Ford films I watched this month but silly humor still intrudes at times and the racism issue seems to be resolved too easily. Still an amazing role for John Wayne and an outstanding film. 9/10

6/29
37. The Far Country (1954)* (James Stewart The Western Collection)
Another Stewart/Mann film, this one about a gold rush town in the Yukon. A standard western plot which plays out in a pretty predictable way. Well directed, acted, and photographed though. 7/10
