I made the mistake of watching the sequel, Secret of Nimh: Timmy to the Rescue. Skip this one. Really. It's pretty bad. Cheesy, but not in a good way. They added singing. And I like singing, but...yeah, no, it's not good singing.

just came back from seeing Diary of a Teenage Girl - there's a lot of animation mixed in with the live action - very impressive!

Re: 6th Annual August Animation Challenge
I've been watching a lot, but commenting has taken a backseat.... but I found time today because I've been watching a weird 1980s Japanese-ish Alice in Wonderland TV series on Amazon. It's.... very odd. Mildly musical, too. And very clearly a recurring daydream rather than alternate reality.
Anyone ever heard of this?

I ended up starting with my second choice this morning. I was looking for my Schoolhouse Rock set, but misplaced it. So I watched part one of GI Joe: The Revenge of Cobra instead. Except for the 1987 movie, I own every episode of the series, including both seasons of the DIC version.

Re: 6th Annual August Animation Challenge
I found out that every morning Discovery Family Channel is running an hour of the original Transformers TV series, followed by an hour of Jem and the Holograms. I tuned in by chance this morning and came upon the ending of an episode in which Jem & co. go back in time--to 1969--and meet Jimi Hendrix(!), who kisses Jem on the cheek. I wish I'd found these sooner. I don't think I have time this week to watch complete episodes of any of them for the challenge.

Well, that was very interesting. I just finished the first episode. I have to say Alice was fairly annoying. The concept is different and I kind of want to see more, but I don't know that I can stand to listen to her voice anymore...maybe if I have more time before the month ends, I'll watch another. I do have to say that it took a bit too long for me for her to reach Wonderland-and then she's only there for 2 minutes before waking back up at home. I'd much rather have had Alice be there for more of the show. But I suppose this one set up the rest of the series/season.
The oddest thing for me is the "next episode" teaser which - and this may be a "Japanese thing", based on comments I've read about some film trailers - basically explain every detail of the next weeks' plot and then invite you to watch and see it! All in Very 1980s English RP.
Then the theme again, with glazed-eyes "wooo"ing at the end... (How did you like the credits music?!)

Finally caught up with Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and enjoyed being back in that universe, though the film wasn't as good as the original. Makes me want to reread the book.
Watched the recent Ghibli film The Tale of Princess Kaguya and didn't love it. I liked the animation style, though.

Watching Superman cartoons on Snag Films on Roku brings back memories. I first saw them as part of Toonami on Cartoon Network. I just finished another episode to start the day with about a bullet car.

Past few days I have been working on the checklist. For Japan Academy Awards' Excellent Animations I watched From Up on Poppy Hill and The Wind Rises. I enjoyed From Up on Poppy Hill more -- Miyazaki does strong female characters well and The Wind Rises seemed to lack that part. The fact vs fiction differences in The Wind Rises made it seem more fiction than fact to me so it was hard to get too terribly upset by it.

I watched a few more episodes of the Flintstones with my granddaughters. They both *love* the show!
I'm now wondering if they'd enjoy the pre-Pebbles episodes as much. I'm hoping so as I don't have S4-6.
I *almost* watched Heavy Metal yesterday. It's not a favorite but I'd picked up a copy anyway "just because" and thought I'd watch it this month since I didn't get it in during the SF/Fantasy Challenge. I made the mistake of looking it up and saw it also has a horror genre tag and decided to hold it until October - maybe. I think I have more new horror titles than I can comfortably watch in October and should just watch it now...

I just watched a good movie on Netflix, about the life of various dinosaurs, called Dinotasia. It was even narrated by Wernor Herzog.

Saw Justice League: Doom yesterday, of the DC animated movies I've seen, I'd rate it just below Batman: Under the Red Hood.

It is very interesting - never knew there was a continuing series rather than straight mini- adaptation. The episodes do seem to ease into a fairly standard formula: 5 minutes at home (where the seeds of the 'daydream' are sown) and then almost 15m in Wonderland with a brief wrap up at home to remind you it was a dream..
The oddest thing for me is the "next episode" teaser which - and this may be a "Japanese thing", based on comments I've read about some film trailers - basically explain every detail of the next weeks' plot and then invite you to watch and see it! All in Very 1980s English RP.

I've been working my way through one of my unwatched Darkwing Duck box sets and came across an episode I didn't remember: "Twin Beaks". It was a odd mashup of Twin Peaks, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the comic strip The Far Side. I was pretty impressed with how specific the references got. The mimicked the iconic theme, added a eyepatch to a character, and even had another character wrapped in plastic.

I can't sleep, because I don't feel well at all, and on top of that, I'm in a lot of pain, so I thought, why not put my sleeplessness to good use, and watch animation. I just finished the 'Japoteurs' episode of Superman, on Snag Films on Roku.

Re: 6th Annual August Animation Challenge
Ok, watched the 2nd episode and while I was glad to see that she "left" the normal world much quicker this time, Alice still only spent about 2 minutes actually in Wonderland. I did pay more attention to the theme and luckily it still hasn't stuck with me. The "woo"ing is a bit over the top though! One thing I did like was trying to get the key-she finally realized she only had to knock into the table rather than eating/drinking strange objects!

I plan to mix up animation with documentaries today, as I've been on an education kick lately, but will likely get a lot of TV in today. Plan to spend most of my day in bed today, as parents will be gone, and I'm still in terrible pain. Though I don't feel quite as sick as last night. I do have the chills though.
Ash, regarding your post about Discovery Family, before Transformers, there also an hour of GI Joe.

I think they're referring to Fushigi no Kuni no Alice (1983).

I have a question. In the Criterion Challenge thread, under animated content that was eligible for duel credit, someone mentioned Godzilla. Does that mean kaiju counts in this challenge?

Re: 6th Annual August Animation Challenge
Godzilla's not animated. Maybe the 2014 U.S. remake qualifies because of its CGI, but not good ol' fashioned Eiji Tsuburaya man-in-rubber-suit kaiju.
