6th Annual August Animation Challenge

6th Annual August Animation Challenge!

List thread here when live.

The Details

Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time.

Challenge ends September 1st at dawn.

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine.

This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here.

Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count.

Lists

Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats.

How to win

Names will be randomly selected from http://www.random.org/lists/ The top people, one prize per person, get something. Unfortunately, prizes can only go to people in the States.

I did a blind buy of Cowboy Bebop (the entire series) last week from Amazon so will watch it this month to see if I like it or not.

I saved watching my set for this challenge as well and I'm really looking forward to it.

Question for those in the know:  I have read that this series has a great English dub. Would you recommend that I watch with the English dub first or Japanese with subtitles?

It qualifies for the Sci-Fi Challenge also. In fact, I started this month with Cowboy Bebop #1, for old times' sake. I love that series. Just be aware that despite the frequent comic tone (think Lupin the 3rd meets Neuromancer), there are some very serious episodes. The wide-ranging music score by Yoko Kanno is pretty amazing. A girl I went to high school with sings on the soundtrack. And each episode title references some genre of music.

Cowboy Bebop is one of the few series where watching with the English dub is preferred and recommended (Big O is another one).

I've got an hankerin' to burn through Flame of Recca; I've read through the arc covered by the anime and it'll be interesting to see what (if any) changes they've made to the story. I've still got 10 or so volumes to go for the manga.

Another item on my 'to be watched list' is Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart (2013)

Yes, I know. I'm so backed up with non-animated SF series I'm purposely waiting for the Animation Challenge for this one. Part of me wants to start it to find out (I've heard if you like Firefly you'll like Cowboy Bebop - Firefly is a SF TV Top 10 Favorite) but that backlog won't let me. :)

Thanks! Being animation I pretty much figured there's no issue with lip sync with a English dub but had wondered the same thing. English track it is. :)

To be honest, I've never heard the English dub of COWBOY BEBOP, so I don't know how good it is. The Japanese voice actors are superb, and if you listen to the English dub you miss out on hearing the dulcet tones of Megumi Hayashibara in the role of Faye Valentine. She's one of my favorite singers in the world, as well as being one of my favorite voice actresses.

I'm not much of a dub fan, myself. 99% of the stuff I watch will be with Japanese audio. Bebop is one of the very, very few dub exceptions I make.

My wife loves One Piece but I don't think I'll be ready to start that for next month. One long running series at a time.

I think I'm going to watch movies that do stop motion animation, robotics, and other non-cartoon type animation.

I'm a little chagrined to say that I typically watch anime series dubbed if one is available and not terrible. Usually, the reviews at Anime News Network reliably assess the dubs and subs. With some favorite anime series, such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Wolf's Rain, the English voice actors are too connected to the characters for me to watch subbed. Honestly, it's easier to watch a good dub since I often have dinner while watching television.

I've been waffling about participating in this challenge. However, this could be a good time to work through a couple anime series and Saturday morning cartoons. I really want to delve into Attack on Titan and Death Note.

Check out the Amazon exclusive collections. They put a few of the collection sets together in a box set and it can sometimes end up being slightly cheaper than buying individually.

Sounds like everybody already has quite a line up of options! I bought recently the Winsor McCay: The Master Edition collection that I'm eager to watch. Otherwise, it's going to be whatever I haven't watched yet. Despicable Me 2, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, to start with.

I have to admit to the same. While some films the dubbing is horrible and I prefer the sub titles to it, I tend to be doing something else while watching. Bad habit, but I blame society for my need to multitask. O:)

Watched Boxtrolls not too long ago and it was alright. I liked the animation aspects of it much more than the actual story, though.

Just dropped into the thread to see why there was so much pre-discussion, and I find it's all about Cowboy Bebop! I've seen a few episodes, but like many finally bit on the full BD set recently so I might watch that along with everyone else. :lol:
