Mine's not so much TV but SF in general. If I see a SF title I don't own it automatically goes in the "I want that" list. If it's a 50s/60s title it goes at the top. I'm kicking myself for not purchasing a copy of the Video Dimensions release of Planeta Bur before it became unavailable. I almost pulled the trigger last week and decided to wait a few more days when *BOOM* it's no longer available to order!

Like you I could do the entire month with nothing but TV series and still have some left over. I, too, have The Prisoner still unopened, S4 of Enterprise, as well as the original BSG, Lexx S3/S4, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman S3/S4, Dollhouse S2, The New Outer Limits S1, Sliders S5, Space: Above and Beyond, Caprica, Earth, Final Conflict S1, Merlin S1, Legend of the Seeker S1, Mister Ed S2, The X-Files S1/S2/S3, Quantum Leap S1/S2, Charmed entire series, Xena S2/S3, and a few others. Wow... Until I listed those I really didn't think about how much unwatched SF/Fantasy TV content I really have sitting around!

My wife refuses to watch anything that sounds like SF. The only exception we watched together was Quantum Leap. I kept telling her it was SF at heart but she didn't care as the stories were more drama/soap/mystery type stuff that she likes. She also watched Charmed which totally threw me for a loop when I "caught" her watching it one day. I keep telling her that lots of SF (especially TV) is pretty much like lots of what she watches but it just takes place on another planet or another time. She doesn't buy it so when I watch SF/Fantasy, I watch alone (like Thorogood):

I drink watch alone, yeah
With nobody else

You know when I drink watch alone
I prefer to be by myself

That one's on my "wish list" for eventual purchase (when the price is right). I'll probably ignore your advice as I'm pretty much a SF/Fantasy whore and will purchase and watch just about anything in those genres no matter how bad a picture reviews paint. "Bad" reviews typically mean I'll just wait for a real low price - which usually occurs on those truly "bad" films.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I got the 1st season of the Twilight Zone for my b-day in Oct and have been patiently waiting for July to dive into it. Also picked up season 2 and 3 recently and this will be the first time watching the show (minus an episode here and there through the years) since I was a little kid in the 80s.

I like sci-fi movies but I'm a little better about resisting them. Finally saw Looper recently (for no Challenge credit ) and this month might try to work in that other recent Bruce Willis one...Surrogates? I have a lot of classics to catch up on besides. Finally saw Forbidden Planet during this challenge last year or the year before!

Stop, stop! You're just reminding me that I also have Merlin, Camelot, Angel, new and old Outer Limits, Caprica, Above and Beyond, etc. also on my shelves!

I was able to "sell" her on BSG as a "drama in a sci-fi setting." She also watched Firefly so that helped on the Dollhouse sell. But that's the thing with girls--some of them are huge sci-fi nuts and some just roll their eyes.

That's one of my all time favorites! I can't begin to describe how thrilled I was when it received the remaster treatment! Then there was the bonus film The Invisible Boy, which had also been restored and remastered. I'd heard about it years ago and was finally able to view a copy. It's not great but *is* a good deal of fun!

Mine's never been sold and is of the "roll their eyes" variety but I've grown to live with it.

We have a few of those female SF nuts participating...

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Since people are suggesting sci-fi titles, I'm going to throw one in. It's called Crusade: A March Through Time. Based on a book called Crusade in Jeans, the movie does a pretty good job of following the book. Basically, a boy who's mother works at a lab accidentally gets sent back in time and mixed up with the Children's Crusade. I loved the book as a kid, and when I was trying to hunt down a copy years later, discovered they had made it a movie. It took a long time before I watched it, figuring they'd change all that I loved about the book, but it actually isn't too bad. I enjoyed it and thought it was pretty well done for the type of movie it was.

I have tons of sci-fi/fantasy titles that are unwatched. It's harder to chose what to watch than what not to watch for this challenge. Last year's was my first one and I was able to get through quite a bit and am looking forward to this years for the same reason. I still think I'm going to watch ST: TOS, and (maybe ST:Animated Series,) though.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Got my copy of the Alien Predator Total Destruction Collection and the 1st one of the best of the original series episodes of Star Trek, the one with my favorite episode Balance of Terror yesterday. So, I watched part of Alien, and I watched Balance of Terror last night, as I won't mind watching it again. Internet has been down the past couple of days, so didn't see the sense of doing things for the challenge, as I couldn't list them anyways, so just been watching some sci fi, so watched some Knight Rider yesterday as well. Knight of the Phoenix and Deadly Maneuvers.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Just to chime in, I really liked Surrogates. I feel like it was the victim of bad marketing because 1) no one seemed to go see it when it came out and 2) when I finally did see it, it didn't bear much resemblance to the action film they advertised. I was pleasantly surprised by that one.

In addition to the new movies opening in July, there are some other big screen SF/Fantasy showings on my radar I thought I'd share. Most of them are specific just to Louisville, but I know I'm not the only Louisvillian on the forum (though I have no idea whether I'm alone in this thread).

Select Cinemark theaters will screen Back to the Future as part of their Cinemark Classic Series 7/14 (2:00) and 7/17 (2:00 and 7:00).

If anyone lives in or around Louisville (or will for whatever reason be passing through), Baxter Avenue Theatres will play Aliens 7/13 and The Rocketeer 7/27. Both are midnight showings. I'm planning to go to The Rocketeer as I've still never seen that despite wanting to since it first played theaters 22 years ago.

Also around town, Iroquois Amphitheater is screening The Muppets Take Manhattan on Monday (7/1), The Lorax (7/8) and The Lion King (7/22). They're all free screenings. Not the most obvious SF/Fantasy fare, but I figured I'd make mention of them. I'll skip The Lorax, but I'm hopeful to make it to the other two.

Lastly, Star Trek: The Next Generation Season Four hits Blu-ray 7/30, and they're also releasing "Redemption" cut together as a single feature (as they did with "The Best of Both Worlds") that same day. Still no news about a theatrical screening of "Redemption", but it's certainly a possibility. Could be a neat little thing to catch near the end of the month.

I assumed (I know, I know) that I could start at sunset. Is this not correct?

Sorry, I meant Sunday night but someone mentioned a time that indicated that dusk was like 30 minutes after sunset.

Ah. Right. Well, we're all on the honor system here anyway so we'll just have to trust that it really is dark when you start.

I actually have no problem with the challenge starting at sunset instead of dusk proper.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I was able to count my weekly Saturday viewing of Pokemon on Cartoon Network for the TV on DVD and Action/Adventure Challenges, but not for the current Historical Challenge. Starting next week, I'll be able to count every Pokemon showing all summer for both the July (Sci-Fi/Fantasy) and August (Animation) Challenges. The real Ash Ketchum will be so proud of me. Pika, Pika!

Yeah, I recall looking it up out of curiosity as I watch the occasional episode of Pokémon myself and saw IMDB listed it as Fantasy.

Yes. Sunset preceeds dusk by a half hour or so. The half hour between sunset and dusk is called twilight. Dusk occurs at the point of time when it's not possible to read without supplimental illumination which is when the sun is about 6 degrees below the horizon. Dusk lasts about a half hour, followed by nautical dusk for a half hour after which it's "night" and the sun no longer interferes with astronomical observation.

But as shadokitty has no problem starting at sunset that gives us another half hour!

If the weather cooperates, I'm planning to kick off the challenge Sunday night at the Drive-in with a Monsters University/Man of Steel double feature. Really looking forward to it.

New or old Prisoner? The (proper) Prisoner is fantastic, but the new version was... odd. And not particularly good odd. Just unnecessary. It's near-contemporary Persons Unknown, on the other hand, was what a revived Prisoner should have been. And all the better for not trying to be (at the same time) a slavish remake and a "modern" update.

And naturally the new Prisoner is on disc, but Persons Unknown is not.
