6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Since Mister Peepers does not have time to run this challenge this year, I have decided to step up, as I did not want to see this Challenge disappear. I know he usually posted the discussion thread early in the month to allow for the most discussion, and I decided to do the same.

Dates: Dusk June 30-Dawn August 1st

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews. Documentaries include UFO and alien abduction type shows.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Use any counting method you prefer, as prize determination does not depend on number of items watched.

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

How to win a prize

There's 1 ways to get an entry:
Participate by watching at least 1 item

Audio:

Sci-fi/Fantasy Radio

I'm treating audio harshly since this is primarily a movie/tv challenge. That being said, one episode, 4 hours with commercials, of Coast to Coast counts as one entry. It's the same format for TV, only doubled. The topic of the show has to be sci-fi/fantasy related, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem with Coast to Coast.

If you're listening to something without commercials, or can skip them, you're looking at 3 hours of audio for one entry.

1/4 entry = 45 minutes without commercials and 60 with commercials.

1/2 entry = 90 minutes without commercials and 120 with commercials.

3/4 entry = 135 minutes without commercials and 180 with commercials.

1 entry = 180 minutes without commercials and 240 with commercials.

Checklist:

Spoiler:
*Watching enough shorts or TV to count as one entry, you can use that one entry as a check on the checklist, as long as each of them count for whatever you're checking. You can mix and match what you've seen to make a check, they all don't have to be grouped together as a single entry on your watch list.

If anyone has ideas for the checklist, post them here, and I will edit the checklist. As of now, it is last year's checklist.

Thank you shadokitty for doing this. I would have hated for this wonderful challenge to have gone by the wayside.

As to the checklist, maybe we could change up the movies with actors in it. That way we aren't watching the same stuff as last year.

I was glad to step up and run this challenge. I was thinking the same thing for the checklist myself. If you have any ideas, feel free to post them. I know the checklist is a WiP as I plan to think of new actors as well.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Can you clarify the category "Watch a film starring:"? Each line contains multiple names. Does that mean watch a film with any one of those actors, or are we to try and watch something from each of them?

That means watch a movie with any of those actors, not all of them.

Also, I am keeping the rule in place that allows anything from SyFy to be eligible, as well as any movies in a sci fi dvd set, ie the MC Sci Fi sets.

Do they still run wrestling? If they do I'd make that "anything but wrestling from SyFy". They currently may have other non-qualifying programs but I gave up on them a year or so before they changed their name and don't know.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Not sure if they still have wrestling but they do have infomercials. Based on all the "facts" they claim though, they still might count as sci-fi and fantasy ;)

shadokitty 06-02-13 02:44 PM

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

^ Fair enough, all but wrestling and infomercials on SyFy. Anything else counts however, as otherwise, what is the point of allowing the channel in the first place?

shellebelle 06-02-13 04:21 PM

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I would say change up the directors also.

shadokitty 06-02-13 04:55 PM

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I get off work early tomorrow, so may spend some time researching some actors and directors for the checklist.

Dusk on June 30th? Seems to be what all the other challenges are doing.

Not sure I will participate this time (Let's say that if the May MYO Challenge was a test, I flunked!) but Hamiltons is glad to sponsor some prizes.

Thanks to shadokitty for covering hosting!

Regarding the checklist:
"Watch a film and its remake" are there a lot of science fiction film remakes?
"Watch a film based on a video game" - I'm not a fan of this one, video game movies aren't very common and are usually painful.
"Watch a silent film" - the decades checklist covers the history already.

Some suggestons:
"Watch a movie featuring laser blasters"
"Watch a film made on a low budget [pending more specific definition]"
"Watch a documentary feature"

Thank you GoldenWheels. I've never hosted before, so how do we pick prizes?

Those are good ideas. I'll probably start editing the checklist today sometime.

Still working on coming up with actors and directors, but have updated the checklist with the suggestions posted earlier regarding replacing types of films with other types. Still a work in progress and will likely be most of the month.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951); Remake - The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Last Man on Earth (1964); Remakes - The Omega Man (1971), I Am Legend (2007)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956); Remakes - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Body Snatchers (1993), The Invasion (2007)

Planet of the Apes; Remake - Planet of the Apes (2001)
Godzilla (1954); Remake - Godzilla (1998)
Rollerball (1975); Remake - Rollerball (2002)

A few done for HBO/Cinemax:
Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958); Remake - Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman (1993)
These have the same titles but the plots can be very different:

I try to be pretty easy, normally I give a dollar value, 50$ normally but I am flexible if you go over a bit, and set you loose on the website (hamiltonbook.com) to pick'em out. This is normally enough for 3-5 groups of decent prizes.

I also usually check my desk pile to see if I have anything on hand I can chip in we might not have in stock yet. Right now I found:

Navy vs. the Night Monsters (Cheezy)
Octaman (Cheezy)
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season 2, Vols 1 & 2 (Shout!)
Johnny Sokko and the Flying Robot (Shout!)
Ultraseven Complete Series (Shout!)

You by no means have to use these titles though. But newer stuff tends to be on my desk.

No more than 5 prize groups please since I send them out priority mail!

When you choose the winners, however you do it, please collect the addresses and forward them on to me....I try to send things out ASAP.

Oh, and please be up front for the challenge that I can ship prizes to the US only. I feel very badly that I did not mention this to Caligula for the Drive In/Exploitation challenge, we had a winner from Singapore and I had to disappoint the guy.

I kind of liked that one because they tricked us with how it would end.
Spoiler:
The kid sneezed or coughed or something at the beginning, so you think they're going to work it into the aliens dying from the common cold but nope, they die from something else I can't remember.

What about including reboots as well as remakes? Then you get a few more things, like Star Trek.
