On a side note is the UK BD coming August 3rd region free or locked? I hear it has commentary (hopefully subtitled correctly!). Does anyone know?

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues
I just watched the first release over the weekend and I thought the subtitles were good. I don't speak Swedish and I didn't see it theatrically so I can't judge if the subtitles were wrong or different but they seemed good to me. I have seen Asian movies with subtitles that really sucked and I sometimes watch German movies with English subtitles with my wife (I speak German and she doesn't) and many times the subtitles don't match the spoken word at all. I guess the difference here is that I only saw this version and I thought it was good.

i for one liked the movie with these subtitles as i didn't know any better, but if i was missing a lot of subtext and other meanings so to speak then i wouldn't be able to settle and seek out a correct version soon. this would only greatly enhance an otherwise phenomenal film.

Mmmmhhh, now the question I have is, how do we know that the theatrical subtitles are the correct ones? We would really need somebody who speaks Swedish to tell us which subtitles are closer to the spoken word. As I said before I know the problem from German movies that got English subtitles.
Dirk
PS Awesome movie and I would pick up the new version, if indeed the subtitles are a better match to the spoken word.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues
Would have figured by now, given the number of times this question has been asked, that someone would have definitively answered it. Or even taken a stab at it.
Since no one else seems to have, here's what little I can provide. I picked up the corrected disk (as others have mentioned, at Target of all places - Best Buy seems to be contently sitting on old stock, as is Frys) last week and watched it. I own, but have *not* watched the original "creative interpretation" subtitle version, so I cannot make direct comparisons there. Nor have I seen the original in the theater, the above viewing was my first and only experience with the film.
A couple websites, most notably in my memory iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html, have already done comparisons between the original theatrical presentation and the first DVD run.
From the above "original theatrical" examples and what I *remember* from viewing the new DVD, I can state that the new corrected subtitles match. They definitely are *very* different from the dumbed down versions. But I can only state based on memory, and only against the examples shown on the website. No complaints accepted if a word or two is out of place, but what I saw on the website as original theatrical subtitles jogged exactly with memory from the DVD. And I can't say anything about any dialog not listed on the website. But I do know the general flow of the subtitles remained consistent with this more "wordy" style - if they snuck in sequences of the dumbed down subtitles, it sure snuck in under my radar.

That still doesn't answer the question if the subtitles are really closer to the spoken word. It only shows that the theatrical ones are different and people say that they are better but how do we know that they are what the director intended?
Dirk
EDIT: I just looked at a few comparisons and I will pick up the Blu-ray if they release one with the theatrical subtitles as they seem to really change the tone of the movie.

found the DVD version today at Target in Owings Mills/reisterstown, but i took the last "fixed" copy, as there was one other that was the old version. It actually has 4 subtitle tracks (the original dvd version, the theatrical, the narative, and the spanish track) Looking forward to watching this

You know how it is. The stores have the old copies in stock and won't order new ones until the old ones are sold. Consumers won't buy until the new, fixed copies are available. Thus, the situation remains deadlocked forever.
I remember going through this with Anchor Bay's A Better Tomorrow DVDs. The initial release had the dub's altered score even on the Cantonese track. Anchor Bay eventually fixed that. There was a specific phrase on the packaging ("Cantonese 2.0", IIRC) that indicated a fixed version. It took forever before I started seeing the fixed versions in stores.

The more I think of it the more I'll hold off. It's too high price wise considering that it's special features are rather weak. So until I find it cheap...I'll hold for now. Never noticed that it's still at full retail value.

The moment I see a fixed Blu-ray, it will be mine.

titles like these don't tend to drop at retail outlets.
