'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues
Check this
Looks like a major screw up. This may help some of you that were getting ready to make the purchase. I was holding out for a price drop (now I'm glad I did), but now I think I'll be looking for an import.
**I searched for a thread started about the dvd, but nothing came up.

Yikes
Haven't watched the Blu-Ray I bought on release yet. Maybe I will to see how bad it really is.

I don't even know this movie, but I looked at the link you provided and it's just ridiculous to screw up the subtitles like that. I watch lots of subtitled films and I know what a mess an incompetent translator can make of them. But, in this case they had a good translation and they were too cheap to pay for them again or whatever the case was. I feel sorry for people who love this film.

Wow, those are some major subtitle issues. Damn.
I was about to head out today at lunch and pick up the BD, but I think I'll wait to see if a fixed version comes along.
Thanks for the post, OP!

I just want to say that I wouldn't let this subtitle issue stop you from seeing this excellent film, if you love horror movies. I'm a little pissed off about this, but not enough to not watch the film again this way. I bought the DVD on release day as a blind buy because I'd heard such great things about this film and I was not disappointed in the least. This is one of the best vampire films I've ever seen and it's certainly one of the best horror films of the last 10 years. Rent it or seek out a different DVD from another region if you must, but do yourself a favor and check out this movie.

That does look bad, but I watched it for the first time on DVD a few days ago and loved it, despite the subtitles. If you hadn't told me I wouldn't know. Still it's no excuse.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues
I just picked this up at Walmart a couple of days ago and watched it on Sunday. I did watch it with English dubs and no sub-titles. From what I remember, the English dubs are a match for the original sub-titles. I specifially remember several of the screen shots that are pointed out and hearing the dialog as it is displayed with the original sub-titles.
I thought it was a good movie but I dont see the exceptional movie it is made out to be.

The screw-up in this instance is the idiot who had the idea that Americans wouldn't "get" it unless things were over-simplified. Perhaps if Magnolia gets enough emails saying this makes it a "No Buy" they'll come out with with the original -- on an SE of course.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues
I thought the film was great but I wouldnt pay more than $3 for it because of the serious lack of special features. Also points off for automatically (when starting the film) defaulting to the english dubbed version of the film instead of the subtitled version. And now with the subtitle problem it's just another instance of screwing up the dvd.

Is that only on the SD version? I have the BR coming from Amazon today so I'll check, but DVD Verdict lists it as having 3 separate English subtitle tracks, so maybe they picked the wrong one?
Subtitles:
• English
• English (Narrative)
• English (SDH)
• Spanish

Yep, the film is amazing even with the subtitle differences. And forget about the atrocious English dub, while it may use the screener dialog any positives are immediately nullified by the horrific voiceovers, particularly for Eli (who was also dubbed in the Swedish track, but the Swedish producers picked the perfect voice for her there).
Also there are differences in the sound design between the two tracks as well:

The DVD has both English and English (Narrative) subtitle tracks.
I have no idea what the English (Narrative) does as no subtitles have come up when turned on, but the English subs are flawed on the DVD.
Magnolia has been pretty solid when releasing DVDs in the past; hopefully they can fix this issue.

I have the BD as well. The English track is the standard subtitles. English (Narrative) is to be used with the English dub, where only things like the Swedish signs, newspapers, etc. are subtitled. The English (SDH) track is for deaf/hard of hearing people where sounds are also printed out on the screen in addition to the spoken words (e.g. "(train passes overhead") or "(someone knocks on door)"
