But if the subtitles are screwed up, how is it better? The only point I was making is that the dub seems to be accurate or at least more accurate to what the subtitles were on the prescreening release. And although they could have done a lot better with picking people to dub this movie, I don't see how watching it sans dub and with subs would make it that much better a movie. I didn't hate it indeed I quite liked it but maybe I am missing something in that people are saying it is one of the best vampire movies ever. I just don't see that.

And I'll throw this out now. I am not a horror movie lover. I dislike most of the movies they make now-a-days and call horror movies but I do like some vampire movies and I don't know that I would list this as one of the best, just better than average. But that is my opinon. I would really like to know why so many think it is so good.

While one of the lead characters is in fact a vampire, I wouldn't consider it a vampire or a horror film. It's more of a drama with elements of horror built into it. The film is ultimately about childhood innocence and relationships from the point-of-view of an actual child. The film may move slow to most; but it's horror relies on atmosphere over cheap scares and gore and the film's payoff is rewarded to those who became developed and engrossed with the two leads. It's very ambiguous and a lot is left to the viewer's imagination. Not only does it have the balls to portray a child's viewpoint in an R-rated film (where an American remake most likely won't), it also has the balls not to spell out everything for the viewer. It's a very smart film that knows how to respect it's audience and it's the reason why a lot of people think it was one of the best films of last year.

I won't get into the quality of the film itself, except to say that I loved it despite some flaws...

My point would be that neither option is ideal in this case, but watching the dub of a foreign film is ALWAYS the wrong way to go. (At least, that's my motto. There are probably exceptions.) Watching this film (or any foreign-language film) in its original language preserves so much--original voice acting, inflection, and even cultural/regional nuances. Dubs usually destroy all that.

Even though these subtitles are subpar, they're still superior to the dub. And in this case, the voice acting in the dub is embarrassing and cartoony, by all accounts.

Big time! I mentioned this in the review thread, but when I started watching it on Blu I thought the first lines were supposed to be English since they seem to be a homage to Deliverance (at least in the dub). When we got into the school and I heard the voices, it clicked that something was very wrong.

Now I mostly like this film. But now that I have read the FAQ on IMDB which deals with some of the original book and questions of the difference, do you think the filmmakers were perhaps unsure how to tackle some of the heavier elements so they went with vague and ambiguous? Not saying it doesn't work doing so.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

On another website I read that the Canadian release had different subs. At first, it sounded like this was out, when someone else responded that they bought it, but it had the wrong subs, looked identical to the American release and had no French translations printed on it. I think they probably just got an American copy, and there's still a possibility that a Canadian release is unaffected (it's apparently distributed by someone other than magnolia). Can anyone confirm?

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

Watched my BD copy last night after reading this.

Though most of movie is fine (IMO), many of the scenes especially with
Spoiler:
Oskar teaching Morse Code to Eli and the scene where Eli climbs into bed with Oskar after biting Virginia
seem very confusing, random and lost in translation.

The funniest issue with the subs is the scene where Hakan is
Spoiler:
boy's locker room at the pool.
Swedish Audio clearly states him saying "Eli", and the translation comes out "I'm Trapped". Too funny

The film is still fantastic and was my favorite film of 2008, but it's still disappointing Magnolia screw up a release like this. Again like everyone has mentioned, hopefully they fix this quick.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

why would they change the subs on the DVD release and not the release that was played in US theaters, that seems like it would cost money?

For those on the fence about buying it, I enjoyed it a lot and the subtitles did not effect my viewing experience at all.

Maybe it involved the need to pay the theatrical translator again? The cheaper route was probably to get a new, quick, cheap-ass translation.

Someone posted on IMDB that the Canadian distributor (Mongrel Media) responded to his sent email that the subtitles are the same as the U.S. disc. Looked at his post history and it seems to be sincere.

From The Digital Bits

In other news today, you might recall that we recently reviewed Magnet's Let the Right One In on Blu-ray Disc. Well, it's just come to our attention that the DVD and Blu-ray versions have English subtitles that differ substantially from those of the theatrical art house presentation, in that much of the subtle nuance has been lost and many original lines of dialogue are untranslated entirely. Unfortunately, having only seen the film once in theatres, I wasn't familiar enough with the translation to spot the differences. But Icons of Fright has posted some examples of just how different the subtitles are. We contacted Magnet directly on this issue this afternoon, and they were quick to respond as follows:

"We've been made aware that there are several fans that don't like the version of the subtitles on the DVD/BR. We had an alternate translation that we went with. Obviously a lot of fans thought we should have stuck with the original theatrical version. We are listening to the fans feedback, and going forward we will be manufacturing the discs with the subtitles from the theatrical version."

We asked Magnet some follow-up questions, specifically how people will be able to identify the new discs, when they'll be available in stores and if there will be an exchange program for those who have the existing version. Here's what they said:

"There are no exchanges. We are going to make an alternate version available however. For those that wish to purchase a version with the theatrical subtitles, it will be called out in the tech specs box at the back/bottom of the package where it will list SUBTITLES: ENGLISH (Theatrical), SPANISH."

The no exchange thing is going to upset many that have already purchased the disc, and understandably so. We're at least encouraged to see that the title is being corrected. We'll let you know when the discs are available, and rest assured we're letting Magnet know that an exchange program might be a wise idea...

LOL, yeah, beat me to it!

Anyway, they must've been flooded with complaints. If they don't exchange, I may not buy the discs again, as I was able to fully enjoy it even without direct translation. Then again, this movie was so good I probably will

Ugh. They'd better exchange my disc. Why the hell wouldn't they? If you're willing to admit you made a mistake, then you should go all the way on fixing it.

Re: 'Let The Right One In' US dvd subtitle issues

That's some good news (for some)...I've really been wanting to show this film to some friends, but I don't want their first experience with it to be any different than mine.

For those of you that already bought it I'd keep sending those emails. They responded to the original complaint pretty quick, maybe with more complaints they'll cave on the replacements.
