Re: Rate My DVD Collection

My collection is getting out of hand, thanks to this forum and Big Lots. I try not to buy anything I have no interest in, but sometimes the bug gets the best of me.

Hey, I know how you feel. I just finished (hopefully) a DVD shopping binge that cost me over $800. I have my eye on some Stanley Kuberick films so only time will tell if I can hold off the urge for long.

Do you take everything in life so seriously?

But with respect to your observation - yes, that is why I would prefer to offer suggestions than completely bash or lift up high one's personal collection. What does anyone really get out of that?

Quite frankly I could give two chocolate bananas what anyone thinks of my collection. I simply leave it linked in the event that someone else with similar tastes might find something of interest, period, the end. But I'm always open to valid recommendations of course ....

^ what he said. and ill add, i read this thread for the "positive" opportunities to come across something new to me. i generally ignore the "negative" bashing or subjectives that necessarily come along with the territory.

Nope, DVD's and movies are merely a hobby. One of many.

Re: Rate My DVD Collection

Not a very deep collection and by that I mean it isn't huge in size which doesn't allow for a great depth of number of different types of film. You obviously really respond to war films and tv and must quite like sci-fi. A decent amount of stuff I wouldn't want, but you do have a good amount of excellent classic films. A good collection for your tastes with plenty of good stuff in there.

If someone feels so inclined to look at my collection, then have at it.

Excellent collection, jrsl76. I'm particularly impressed by its breadth. In a single collection, I rarely encounter such a degree of quality across a wide range of genres from Hong Kong action to European sleaze/horror to highbrow art films.

I have too few posts to include a true link, but my collection can be viewed at:

Nice collection. Lots of Criterions and a nice mix of different genres.

Your collection reminds me of all the DVDs that are in the used dvd section of a DVD store of Blockbuster Video. As long as you are happy with it, nice collection!

You own a lot of movies I wouldn't even go near... but I'm guessing that's because you have kids (am I right?). And, as always, to each their own. You have a pretty large collection so as long as you are happy with it I'd rate it highly. It is missing lots of essentials but most collections are (I know mine is missing some of the greatest films ever made - and that I love - but just haven't gotten). I don't watch a lot of the shows you have so I won't really comment there. I don't like wrestling, but again, to each their own. Good job overall.

Oh, and I'm grateful I looked at your collection. I had no idea Gumby: The Movie was on DVD. That was a childhood favorite of mine so I'm going to have to get that at some point.

Anyone want to give mine a new look? I've added a lot of titles to my collection since the last time I asked for an opinion. The link is in my signature.

Nice collection. You own very few movies that I wouldn't want to own, and have room to grow. What you do have is indeed good. A lot of essentials are mixed in, IMHO.

Not horrible, owning Ghost Rider & anything Michael Moore or Hugh Grant hurts my soul, & you have some real puzzles in there (Rocketman?). But you have some decent stuff. You don't seem to be a genre fan or Criterion fan at all, I think there is a lot of Criterion films you would really dig. Also weird that you have "Ong-Bak" but pretty much no other martial arts movies. Based on your collection you should check out the Paramount Centennial Collection line, & since you don't seem to be averse to classics or older films maybe try some Warner Bros noir films.

Uh... what? Did you click the same link as me? He owns 60 criterions - I'd call him a fan.

I won't comment on your Michael Moore comment. Oh wait, I just did...

What an asshat I am. I only clicked on his "owned" link, which didn't have any Criterions in it. I didn't notice that he had them listed in a seperate link. Just ignore that part of my post Cranberry guy.

RagingBull80, I noticed you own Badlands but not Malick's other 70's masterpiece, Days of Heaven. The Criterion disc looks fantastic and is definitely worth buying. Also, as a fan of Jarmusch you should check out Night on Earth. You own The Conversation, why not look into Blow Out and Parallax View, two other excellent 70's-era paranoia/political thrillers. 3 Days of the Condor is in a similar vein, but much slicker than the other two I mention. You've got a solid collection there! I'm always looking for suggestions, if anyone has any. My collection is in my sig.
