I don't think my collection is that great either...Everyone shares the majority of the same dvds - it's the different ones that count. I would give my collection a "C". Very few of us in here have great quality DVD collection. Anyone can have a quantity collection which isn't special. Quality and uniqueness is rare. Check out PRO-BASS, GIGGLES, and GILES DVD collections for the prototype dvd collections.
highly reviewed films don't make a good dvd collection? Very strange view to have. Why do you keep on using the word quantity, I only own 473...that number seems to be tiny compared to serious collectors. I'm all about quality, I just prefer to stick with American made (I do have a handful of foreign films though).

Anyways, it feels a bit elitist to say only the best collections have foreign, underground, artsy stuff. Just my opinion.

That's why there are different types of graders in here! Here, I'll make some more grades for you if it makes you happy:

Mainstream American cinema post-1980s: A
Mainstream American cinema pre-1980s: D
Independent, Obscure, and/or Foreign cinema: D-
Quantity: B+
TV series: C

For some of us, we like to see movies that are... outside of the box, so to speak. Yes, we do share some of the same movies but many of my movies are titles you probably may not have heard of... and not your cup 'o tea.

And that's okay

thanks i guess...my collection used to be a lot bigger, i sold around half of it a year or so ago, including most of the obscure title criterions and what not. eventually it just got to the point where i decided to just keep movies i would watch over and over again. plus being a college student, the the girl i bring home after a saturday night party would definitely be much more interested in old school than fellini's 8 1/2. i tend to get laid more that way...

I own quite a bit that's not on there due to DVD Aficionado not having the proper releases listed. My Australian Lexx box sets are some of those not listed.
I was going to give you a high grade until I saw your Wrestling DVD collection.

"B-" mainly for a great horror movie collection theme.

lost the original terminator, thought the 3rd was garbage. first 2 star wars prequels sucked. alien 3 and resurrection are nearly unwatchable, and i hate will smith. not really an 80's horror fan and all the saw sequels blew. thanks for the suggestions though. my collection is built around what ill actually WATCH, not just having it to gather dust on the shelf.

My "pre 80s" American cinema: Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry movies...it may not be alot, but those are worthy of a D? You've lost all credibility Toddly

You have one pre-1975 movie... And it's Dirty Harry...

It's not that Dirty Harry is a bad movie, but when that's all you have in the period circa 1890 to 1975, then I wouldn't call it a good collection. For your personal tastes and those of many others, your collection is probably very good, and that's perfectly fine. We all have different tastes and you shouldn't take our criticisms so personally.

But when I judge a collection, I look for variety and breadth. Looking at yours is like going to a library that only has books written after 1950.

Lee Hero,

You can scan and submit your Lexx box sets to be added to their database. We share a lot of the same horror titles and I see a few I might have to get!

Re: Rate My DVD Collection

Heres mine if someone wants to butcher it (born in 85 and I'm mostly a 90s-current release, horror and comedy kinda of person), let me know what you guys think. I've updated it up to the letter "R" a few days ago and probably have like 5 to take off and 30 to add. Thanks,

Thanks for the compliment! And those Woody Allen films are among what I consider the "gems" of my collection. I definitely understand the lack of classic films. That has a lot to do with me finding cheaper prices on newer films and my hopes to hold out on a lot of the true classics for their eventual Blu-ray releases. Still, I recognize that I am missing tons of classic films that I have seen and loved and that are worth owning -- as well as countless films I should probably see but just haven't found a chance to yet. I really should get a Netflix account sometime. It just seems like too much with the amount of things I have to watch right now anyway. I've purchased so many movies and that's where too much of my money is heading to right now anyway. Maybe I will start cycling CH accounts to pick up some favorites of mine that are classic films not likely to hit Blu-ray in the near future.

I'm glad my post 80's collection is good though. That makes a certain level of sense to me since I'm 19. But as an aspiring film-maker that loves watching TCM and really appreciates the art and history of film, I know my collection needs improvement. Of course we all probably feel that way. There is always room for improvement.

Whether or not you were looking for a brief critique, Lick, I took a look through your collection and, damn, that's impressive! I love how much variety you've got there, and the schlock/exploitation/giallo stuff alone would keep me occupied for months on end.

I posted a link to mine in this thread quite some time ago, but it's changed a lot since then and I've started using DVDAf again since then, so here it is if anyone cares to have a look:

If you're into the Japanese stuff, check out Assassination. As always, I'm looking for further additions to my own collection, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy to see a good number of horror/sci-fi stuff. You need to set up folders to make it easier to view, though

Yikes, you need to set up less folders. You know your "folders" tab mirrors the "genre" tab. Maybe set up 10 or so less-specific folders would make it easier to view.

Lots of good stuff there, though

Nice collection of Criterions and classic Blu-rays. Plus, anyone who has Homicide: The Complete series is alright in my book.
