Anyhow, there is apparently no final word yet as to whether SUPERMAN IV will get an extended treatment (reportedly, the previously excised footage has been destroyed by Warner after the film's initial release, but how likely is that?) but here's hoping...

Wouldn't it be sweet if this set were done like either the Matrix or, better yet, the Lost S1 packaging?

I remember someone on HTF talking about how a place in London has a bunch of Superman 4 stuff. I believe it was the lost footage.

That would be interesting if the footage did turn up. Legend has it that the excised scenes would have been used for a SUPERMAN V by Cannon Films. So it's very possible that a sequel to SUPERMAN IV could end up being worse than what preceded it.

I find it hard to believe, however, that scenes cut out from the preview of SUPERMAN IV could be incorporated into another film. Then again, this is Cannon we are (or were) talking about...

Today's (February 7, 2006) AINT IT COOL website has some more information about the so-called "Donner cut" of SUPERMAN II.

The bottom line is, what we'll probably get is an assembly of his footage compiled to re-create, with limitations, his original vision of the sequel. As reported earlier, Donner is not directly involved, leaving the work to his assistant Michael Thau.

So at the very least, we get to see some of the missing/lost/excised footage originally shot by Donner. That, to me, is good enough to spend god-knows-what the retail price will be for this long-awaited release.

Hopefully some of those awful sounding Hackman dubs will be redone by Hackman for the "Donner Cut"

so is it true that the 14-disc set will come out next summer NOT in November? well that's what davisdvd posted...

If it IS a summer release--which DavisDVD clearly indicates--that kills the rumor that Superman Returns will be part of the set. All 14 discs will be dedicated to the four Superman films and Supergirl. Why do they need 14 discs for five films...?

Anchor Bay doesn't have the rights any longer. WB bought up all the rights to the various Superman films, including Supergirl.

Sold my Superman boxset. Now to decide what to do regarding my LE Supergirl. I wish I knew what was upcoming to know if I should sell it :/

If Superman Returns isn't a part of the box set, I'm seriously scratching my head as to what's going to be on the damned thing.

Maybe they'll add the Fleischer Superman cartoons to the set. Sort of round out that 14 discs.

I've been wondering the same thing. Even at a generous 2 discs per film, you still have 4 extra discs...

"Late in 2006 (tentatively in November, timed to coincide with the DVD
release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns), look for a 14-disc
Superman: Ultimate Collector's Edition box set. This will feature new
deluxe editions of all four of the original feature films, including a
Superman II: Special Edition with something called The Donner Cut.
This is being assembled by editor Michael Thaw based on the film's
original shooting script and Donnor's original notes. At least 50% of
the film will be footage you've never seen, more than 70% of it
directed by Donner. You'll also get Richard Lester's final theatrical
cut of the film. The Donner Cut will only be available on DVD in the
Ultimate Collector's Edition box set, although it will also be
released in HD-DVD (and likely Blu-ray Disc if that format is
available)."

"We were actually shown a clip of the new Donner Cut at the event - the
original opening to Superman II, in which Lois Lane notices a picture
of Superman in a copy of The Daily Planet... and then she looks at
Clark Kent standing nearby... and she begins drawing glasses, a suit
and hat on the picture of Superman. She figures it out. Then she tells
Clark she knows who she really is... and jumps out Perry White's
office window to prove she's right. Clark runs at super-speed
downstairs, and blows up at the falling Lois to slow her fall. She
lands safely in a fruit stand, by which time Clark has already run
back upstairs to preserve his identity. Someone asks him where Lois
is, and he replies, "Uh... she just stepped out for a minute."

"An interesting thing to note however, is that it seems Richard Donner
himself hasn't yet been involved (and is not involved in cutting the
new version of the film). During the event, I chatted with AICN's Drew
McWeeny (well known as "Moriarty" over there) who told me that he's
been interviewing Donner recently (watch for that to be posted on AICN
soon). The director has reportedly told Drew that he's not really
interested in revisiting the film. When asked during the event what
Donner's involvement was (whether or not he'd do commentary, etc),
Warner execs said, "That's still to be decided." Our guess is that the
studio is still negotiating with Donner to participate, and that it's
merely a matter of a dollar figure that everyone is happy with."

3 Discs for Supergirl? I highly doubt it. In fact I seriously doubt there could be 3 discs for Superman III either. They're not 3-hour movies. I could maybe see 3 discs for Sup I and II, but I really don't see Part III and Supergirl as 3-Disc Collector's Editions ala The Wizard of Oz, Ben-Hur and Gone with the Wind. That seems a little far-fetched to me.

Thats sounds awesome. And why not a 3 disc for Supergirl? The previous LE was already 2 disc, with the separate cuts on each disc. Port over some special features, and bam, 3 disc.

Wait--so all films have special features but Superman IV? That seems a bit odd. Supergirl isn't even part of the series proper. Is it? Never known much about it, but have always seen it as a spin-off with just enough of a connection to the Superman franchise to capitalize on its success. Seen only parts of it--not enough to form a solid opinion. Just always looked like a low-budget '80s fantasy flick--least in my memory. Surprised it's getting more attention than one of the franchise films.

What? no love for IV? huh.

it would be nice to get a no-holds-barred documentary about all 4. I'm sure Margot Kidder would have some good stories
