Any news on SUPERMAN sequels special editions?

Some encouraging info can be found here (a great site, to which I formerly donated a few articles and pictures):

(Sorry, I could not re-type the article or paste the picture blurb, but it apparently comes from DVD MONTHLY magazine.)

Let's see how good my typing is:

MAN OF STEEL FLIES AGAIN
Warner head talkes new Special Editions for Superman sequels

One year after Disc World first broke the story, the group of diehard Superman fans who lobbied Warner Home Video to release Superman II as a speacial edition DVD may just be about to get their wish. With Brian Singer's Superman Returns expected in June 2006, Warner Home Video has confirmed plans to release special edition discs of each of the three Superman movie sequels (the original Superman The Movie received substancial special edition treatment on its debut in 2001).
"They'll either come out around the theatrical release date of Superman Returns," confirmes Neil McEwan, the managing directory for Warner Home Video in the UK, "Or worse case around the DVD release in the United States. It's just the perfect timing. We'd be silly to wait until 2007 or 2008... when we can capitalise on the general interest in Superman that would be overwhelming because of the new movie."
The announcement, due later this year, will confirm whether scenes starring Marlon Brando and Christopher Reeve, that had long been considered lost, will be a part of hte new retail package.

Wow. I hope that's true. I highly doubt a re-cut would happen either, but I hope they include some of the stuff that Donner filmed but wasn't put in after he was fired as special features.

I think I might be in the minority, but I didn't like any of the sequels (even # 2)

Hopefully, they'll change the artwork for these new editions and maybe give part 1 the Two-Disc SE treatment. That would be a dream come true.

I agree. Though I would be interested to see a re-cut version of part 2.

I, also, would love to see a Donner cut of II, though I don't expect it at all.

What I do hope and pray for is the Marlon Brando scenes somewhere in the supplementary materials. It would be a tribute to the memory of both actors that their shared scene would finally be revealed to the puiblic.

Also, the scene where Lois jumps out of window to get Superman to reveal his identity would be totally cool.

I'm fairly that the excised footage from Superman IV no longer exists (it was literally destroyed). However, I'd love to see the extended footage for both the first and second sequels.

Not going to happen, although I would love for it to.

I am pumped about this news regardless :D

I didn't know that. :( Mind you, I hate this movie, but I keep this glimmer of hope that it was not such an abomination before it was edited down to 90 minutes.

This is going off-topic, but...

Does anyone know if the theatrical version of Superman (without the added footage and altered sound effects) was released in any region? I know that just about everyone got the new cut, but I was thinking that the original may have slipped out in Scandanavia or something...

Mulan darling.

I'd probably pick up 2 again, but 3 and 4 I'll be happy to skip.

Xander 09-20-05 12:10 PM

Cool! I'd love to have an SE of 2. And I would probably buy one of 3 as well, just cause it has a few good moments in there. I probably wouldn't buy 4, unless they restored the cut footage. And maybe not even then. :)

rennervision 09-20-05 02:23 PM

In Superman III, deep beneath the surface there is a good movie trying to get out. But the evil Superman story arc is too short. A potential romantic triangle with Lana and Lois is presented in the dullest possible way. And the villains are extremely weak. (A third reappearance of Lex Luthor would have been much more welcome.) To add insult to injury, none of the characters are handled with the respect Richard Donner had for them, as everything is now overly campy. Of course, the Salkinds are to blame for every single thing that was wrong with this one.

I would only double dip on part II. I've never bought part IV. (And without the lost footage, I never will.)

nightmaster 09-20-05 05:01 PM

I just watched II yesterday and thought it looked pretty good considering it wasn't remastered when it was released- not perfect but watchable. I'd DEFINITELY double dip for an SE and would be shocked if they don't time a remastered set with the Superman Returns DVD release.

Kimiakane 09-22-05 03:58 PM

The sad thing about IV is that over 40 minutes was removed which would have made one of the worst editied movies of all time...make a lot more sense. I have heard searches have been made but apparently no one involved with the film has any knowledge of what became of the lost footage. The script and some stills are all that remain. What a wonderful tribute it would be to the memory of Christopher Reeve if this movie could have been restored to it's original running time. :(

digitalfreaknyc 09-22-05 04:01 PM

According to HTF, the footage is in England.
