Not really. If they're using his original script and notes, it's as close as we're ever going to get.

They called Blade Runner "The Director's Cut" even though it wasn't.

Where did you hear it's only as an HD_DVD? I've just heard the Donner cut will be exclusive to the box set.

What I want to know is about that big plastic S wrap he throws in Superman II. It's a scene Family Guy poked fun at effectively and one that has bugged me for years.

What I've read is that the Superman II Donner version will be available in standard & HD dvd. Problem is that the Donner version won't be available separately so you have to buy the 14-disc set in order to get it.

DAMED, my bad, I just looked back at the quote and they were saying that it's also going to be on HD-DVD, as well as regular DVD...

DIGITALFREAKNYC, the Blade Runner on dvd did involve Ridley Scott though, although he was disappointed in it, partly because they rushed him and he was working on Thelma and Louise...he's happier with the current DVD version compared to a version a year before it, which was unauthorized by him...but we all know that Ridley Scott created his true Director's Cut and a remastered version recently and better be on the DVD shelves by 2007...

Depends on if they include both the International Cut and the Director's Cut. They could be releasing the Theatrical Cut and keeping all the additional scenes on a Bonus Disc.

Dunno. Up to you.

I think we're all aware of that. I wasn't comparing Supes II to Empire, i said it is like the Empire Strikes Back of the Supes quadrilogy in that it is widely regarded the best of its series, and quite possibly the 'darkest'.

Since I already have the original set, I might as well wait for the HD-DVD (or BR if at all) version when it and the player become more affordable.

So we have to own Part 3 and 4 in order to own the director's cut of Part 2?

I like part 2, but the original is the best, imo.

Agreed. Superman: The Movie is pretty damn close to perfection. I watched 2 when I first got the boxed set and it definitely didn't hold up as well as the original. None of them did. And I've never heard that the 2nd one was better than + darker than the first. If anything, the added "comedy" killed it.

Personally, I'm dying to see what could/should have been.

Adding back in the scene I referenced earlier should add a little bit of darkness to the movie. The one involving the kid on the horse.

damn. The thing is the LE goes for a good amount of $ on ebay. I'm afraid a better version comes out and this set is worthless and I'm stuck with an outdated version.

For Superman 3, I hear they are going to digitally replace Christopher Reeve's head with Gene Wilder.

For Superman 4, they will add more background and depth to Solar Man. That's why the original sucked, because Solar Man was 2-dimensional. With his background story, this movie will surpass the first Superman 1 movie.

I used to prefer the second one, but I've grown to appreciate the original more over time(especially after seeing the DC on the big screen 5 years ago). My only real gripe with the original is the ending that still to this day makes no sense. As dumb as the magic kiss was at the end of II, at least it could be explained.

BTW, I think another reason Part I has looked better over the years is because the DVD literally looks better when compared to Part II. WB didn't show any respect for the sequel for the first DVD release.

Isn't it "Nuclear Man"?

I am not the biggest fan of these films, but I love them so I will stick with my Superman dvd box set, regardless. I am happy with it.

Seems like you're the only one here that feels that way.

..and everyone else.

I wasn't comparing Supes II to Empire. Maybe you should read closer next time, no?

I did. No one else has agreed with you here. Supes 2 is not the best nor the darkest of all of them.

For what it's worth, I agree with FRwL. Superman II is the best, IMO. And I can certainly see it being the darkest as well. Not that any of them are all that dark though... I've never seen the Star Wars films though, so personally, I'd call it the "Batman Returns" of the Superman quadrilogy.

Here's an interview with donner and he talks about it:

Well, to repeat a sentiment stated very early in this thread, at the very least I think film fans will be grateful to see ANY of the excised or unused footage shot by Donner, even though it won't be packaged in his own "Donner cut."

The truth is, since he never finished his version of SUPERMAN II, there is no way to get a complete edit of what he originally wanted the film to be. Just being able to see what's been locked away in the WB vaults should suffice enough. Hell, they don't even have to edit the footage cohere into a story, let's just see what was shot!
