BTW: If you find a GS that is Buy 2 Get 2, then you can get dvds there {even some you don't want} and then exchange them for better/other titles at other stores running the G2 G1...

Wow! Please tell me you didn't get the new versions of Yojimbo and Sanjuro. That's just not even fair!

YMMV .

I went through a ton of unnecessary crap trying to do that and was wholly unsuccessful, and for the first time in my life felt the need to call the district manager over my treatment.

After buying 3 box sets with the B2G1 deal, I noticed one of the discs in a set was severely scratched. I was able to return that box set for its full price - essentially that made the deal B1G1 free. Luckily that set wasn't the one that was free. I wonder what would happen if it was the free set that was defective.

i always wondered why gamestop accepts returns of the movies.
U can just watch it, then return it for full price.
i dont think retail stores let u return after a movie is opened.

It's against the law to return an opened DVD for anything other than the same title.
However, the DVDs at a GS are second hand, thus the laws do not apply because none of the money is going to the studios anyway.

FangsFirst.
Ahhh i see now. thanks for the insight.

with that said, it makes it easier to take a chance on a movie or 2.
I went with Snakes on A Plane, Brokeback (I wish I knew how to quit you!) Mountain. Basically glorified rentals.

Keep in mind though, they only allow an exchange once per receipt, and full refunds are within 7 days.
(as it has been explained to me, at least)

That is complete bs. Their actual policy states that you can return a DVD for the another copy of the same one. If there aren't any more copies, then they will give you store credit. Still, there are some states (and territories) where by law, the store has to give you a full refund if your return an item in an specified amount of time. Here in Puerto Rico, the customer has 30 days to return a defective item for a full refund. If the store denies you of a full refund, they are liable for a government fine.

They wouldn't apply the sale to HD DVD's, making it effectively worthless for me.

Or Blu Ray for that matter. A manager explained to me that since January, the HD and Bly Ray discs have their own UPCs in their system.

Well, like I said, that's how they explained it to me.
I've got a few of my exchange/return receipts from them (in truth, I do NOT abuse it, there was one instance in which I was trading from store to store during a REGULAR b2g1, and then from my star trek fiasco, etc) and they say "did not want" underneath the DVDs returned or exchanged...which would suggest the registers are fully prepared.

But, as I say, that's just what I was told. Could be based on NC law, as you suggest.

Stopped by the downtown Portland EB Games, figuring there wouldn't be much left. No good box sets, but....

Walked out with:

Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith (WS - 2 disc)
Lady in the Water (WS - Lenticular Cover)
As Good As It Gets (WS)

... for $17.xx total after B2G1F and Edge card discount.

Also... the manager told me that they're getting in lots of dvds "from the home office" (whatever that means), so I guess I'll have to start making the rounds again to see if there's anything new at my other store.

That usually means that they're cycling in shit that either isn't selling at other stores, or shit that store "A" has 20 copies of but your local store only has 5.

After a recent trip to a few GS/EB stores, it looks like the days of great deals to be had in the stores are over. Where there used to be tons of DVDs, and many great deals, it's not down to a very tiny little area, and I hear that many stores will no longer accept DVDs at all. I really, really hate to hear this. Over the past few years I've been able to get some great deals in GS/EB stores.

Not many, but a few. All 6 stores in my area still have DVD's and still take them in for store credit, but I have seen a few stores in other areas that no longer carry DVDs and thus no longer accept DVD trades and instead send the person to another store.

It seems that they are repricing all DVDs that they took in but didn't have a specific SKU in their system for. So anything that has Used DVD R, NC-17, Unrated DVD printed on the yellow sticker has been marked down from $5.99 to $1.99, and the buy 2 get 1 still applies. I picked up The Atomic Cafe, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation and a Dixie Chicks concert DVD for less that $4 after 10% card discount...

Visited 4 more stores today, all of which had repriced the generic Used DVD SKU with new $1.99 price stickers. Still B2G! applies, and 10% card discount makes this a killer deal. I'm constantly surprised by titles I find on their shelves that their system doesn't have a specific UPC for a price sticker...

Are all DVD's 1.99 now? Or just certain ones they didn't have a SKU for?

Any DVD that just had the generic "Used DVD Rated R, NC-17 Unrated DVD" as the disc's title on the price sticker and was priced @ $5.99 is now $1.99.
