Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

It should be mentioned Ollie's this weekend through Sunday has 15% off everything you buy as their semi-annual customer sale.

Stock is so hit or miss from what I've heard and seen firsthand. One store got in a fairly full shipment of these books about 3 weeks back, they were completely wiped out one week later. Though I hear it might be a tad better in more remote and rural locations.

I hit a brand new store that just opened in a rural area. Some great DC, barely any Marvel

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

I happened by my local Ollie's on the last day of their 15% off everything sale and happened upon the Watchmen Collector's Edition release for 24 bucks (!) after the sale was added. It was still shrink-wrapped and in good shape. Even though I have never been a big Watchmen fan, I had to pick it up for that price. I will reread it for the umpteenth time and then decide to keep it or not.

I had the Absolute and sold it years ago. I think I may have gotten that from Ollie's for a steal price as well.

I just noticed several in that above picture, so I guess no surprise for people. I was jsut stunned they had anything decent at mine which has been pretty bare on good shit lately.

Keep your eyes peeled. There's a lot of stuff out and it really does arrive at the ollies at different times, even Ollie's that are relatively close proximity to each other. I held out and was rewarded and didn't have to go to an Ollie's farther away.

Some of the problem seems to be sporadic distribution issues by Ollies. I picked up that same Watchmen box set over two months ago at Ollies, long before reports of it had hit circulation.

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

No luck on the Absolute Justice League at Seekonk, MA, but I did see a few things that have been mentioned a some that have not.
High Moon: Bullet Holes and Bite Marks in sort of a slip case, $6.99?
Still had a Doctor Strange V3 Omnibus (2, 1 in shrinkwrap, 1 opened)
Batman/Superman World's Deadliest $6.99 HC
Black Panther Complete Collection V2 (Priest) SC $8.99
The New 52 10th anniversary edition HC I'm guessing $8.99
Superman Man of Steel V3 Byrne HC $12.99
Flash 75 years of the Flash $8.99
Justice League Aquaman Drowned HC $8.99?

I left with Black Panther and the Byrne Superman, also saw a Captain Carter Marvel Legends Shield for $59.99, but managed to resist.

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

Came across a couple new items at Ollies - a Morbius Epic collection and a pretty thick trade for Sam Wilson's Captain America (modern). Both priced at $9.99.

They also had a cheesy Marvel Advent Calendar.

Not Byrne's best work from what I understand.

Based on this, https://collectededitions.blogspot.c...ohn-byrne.html, I'd say that's true. However, I'm reading the Fourth World Absolutes and this would seem to go with it, plus they say good things about Byrne's Tales of the New Gods. Okay, and it's only $20...and it's Ollies.

I will give Byrne a try on anything. He was my favorite as a kid.

I was really disappointed in his take on Wonder Woman. I ended up getting rid of those pretty quick.

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

Likewise on Byrne, purely for the artwork (and occasionally for the writing). I got that Fourth World book for $30 at Hamilton Book recently, which seemed reasonable (and the Ollie’s in Michigan that I visit rarely has much in their comics section). I saw the Wonder Woman hardcovers in a store here and couldn’t really bite. Those two and even this Fourth World edition are from that period where he was inking his own work in a way that made it look like he wasn’t even drawing in pencils first, but just drawing in ink and sending everything straight to the colorists. The lack of detail is noticeable compared to his X-Men / FF / Alpha Flight / etc days when he was paired with sympatico inkers. Still, for a low enough price, I’ll give even his lesser stuff a try.

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

I think he was ahead of his time with the use of computers and was able to maximize his output, even if it was for mocking up pages and for want of a better expression creating a usable swipe file (or maybe that's a self swipe file). I am not making any judgements on this because I loved his work, but that might account for the lack of detail you mention. Also, I have no authority on this subject, just some anecdotes that he was good with computers, (which is *nothing* like what it is today, when pen sometimes never touches paper).

All of that aside, if I see it at Ollies, I will buy it. Oh orange stickers, how you taunt me.

That does make sense, and probably explains his later work more than I realize. Maybe it’s not so much the lack of detail for me as the lack of refinement that was a hallmark of his earlier work, especially with the right inkers supporting him. The linework in these later books of his (most of which were published after I’d given up on comics in the early 90’s) just seems a bit more rushed, albeit confidently so, with foregrounds and background seemingly drawn with one pen. Even at that, though, his panel compositions and epic splash pages still shine through. A lot of his post-80’s work just seems like he was kinda coasting and cranking it out at that point. Still, $30 (or $20 for those who find it at Ollie’s) is fair enough for 750+ pages of Byrne with a little Simonson mixed in. I know nothing about the New Gods and all that stuff, nor will I buy other books to fill in gaps, so this volume is literally about perusing the artwork for me, and the quick skim I gave it suggests there will still be plenty to enjoy (including what does indeed appear to be a lot of computer-rendered stuff).
