Not a blu-ray and we were lucky to get this BBC TV miniseries of Pride and Prejudice even on a dvd, but the Elizabeth Garvie (Elizabeth) version is the truest adaptation to the book and it is now available free on Amazon Prime instant video. Judge for yourself, but I know the book very well and this is the closest by far and well done by non-name actors.

I'll have to do that, since I do have Amazon Prime.

P&P is my most-read book (and I can quote lines from it) and I've seen and enjoyed other miniseries versions of the story. The reason I prefer the 1995 version is not because it hews closely to JA's wonderful dialog — it does not — but, rather, because of the production values, screenwriting, and acting (especially Mrs. Bennet: Alison Steadman nails the character, but all the roles are superbly acted including Darcy and Elizabeth). The cinematography is gorgeous, as are the locations and sets.

Screenwriting is different from novel writing and a good screenplay has to capture the spirit of the original while still making a good movie/series. The people responsible for the 200th anniversary version of the story did a masterful job. By way of example, Austen never wrote a scene with male dialog unless ladies were present. She wrote only what she knew and that didn't include what men say to one another when they are by themselves. To make the P&P (1995) screenplay work better there were some male character only dialog scenes added. My favorite line from P&P (1995) isn't even in the book, but captures the essence of the scene and characters perfectly.

Because the P&P (1995) version of the story ends with the wedding, after I watch it I always pull out my copy of the book and read the final chapter (Ch 61: "Happy for all her maternal feelings was the day on which Mrs. Bennet got rid of her two most deserving daughters.") to savor Austen's very humorous description of what happened after that.

Another example of screenwriting being a different beast from novels is in the Harry Potter series. My favorite book in the series is Goblet of Fire but it is, by far, my least favorite of the movies because it was abridged out of all recognition. By contrast, my least favorite of the books, Order of the Phoenix, became my favorite of the movies because the very long book was helped by the condensing to movie length and the screen version was outstanding.

So, when I say I think P&P (1995) is the best screen adaptation of a novel ever, I don't mean that it is the most faithful to the original text but that it does the best job of translating the spirit of the story to the screen. IMHO, of course, I'm sure others have their own favorite novel adaptations.

One of the nice things about the BD version of the series is that it is VASTLY better than the many DVD versions. The BD was made from a master newly made from the original negative, unlike the DVDs. The colors on the BD are lovely, in contrast to the very washed-out colors of the DVDs. There is a special feature on the BD set that shows screen wipes of the difference between the DVDs and BDs and it is stunning. After seeing the BDs you'll never want to watch the DVDs again. It is worth mentioning that the series was shot in 16 mm widescreen, so it adapts well to 16:9 screens. Some of the DVDs are cropped for 4:3 screens.

Looks like that's the price at Best Buy right now. Amazon currently has it for $27.99. But I'm guessing Amazon will soon pricematch.

If that's for the 2 titles above, they have pricematched. You'll have to click on the other available new options to see the discounted option to purchase.

Damn, The Grand Budapest Hotel is down to $5.99 already? Pretty damn cheap compared to the $20 I paid when it came out and it hasn't even been out a year. I may pick up The Internship for $4.99. Not a great film but sort of a guilty pleasure and I found it sort of fun.

Not sure, but maybe Amazon is competing with Best Buy's recent sale of $4.99 Fox titles.

I'll wait until the Criterion version of Grand Budapest hits. I may as well put that $5.99 towards instead of getting it now.

I would guess it's more about Fox attempting to pare down their existing Blu-ray inventory. Fox will continue to move further and further away from Blu-ray.

They've had those MGM covers at Best Buy for a while, I believe it's just a single sheet of paper over the normal cover under the shrink wrap.
