Pad: Three options:
You can get any Playstation-compatible pad and a PSX-to-USB converter (positive: many PSX pads out there, lots of options; negative: many reports of "lag" with the pad, which in a game like DDR is critical!)
Or, you can get the Pump It Up pad (positive: works well with no lag; negatives: kind of expensive, and wrong size - way too big!)
Or, you can get the pad that comes with the upcoming PC version of Dance Dance Revolution (positive: should be ideal; negative: no clue when it's coming out or what it'll cost!)
I went with the Pump It Up pad and have been pretty happy, but it's a lot harder than playing with a PSX pad.
Emulator: Try ddrei.com for some info. There are several emulators out there; the one I really like is called Dance With Intensity.

I picked up two pads & DDR Konamix for home, but I think I still like Pump It Up better.
Merged all the DDR threads together.

Best game pad
I'm looking into getting this game and I was wondering what people consider the best game pad to use. I've been reading about the different soft and metals ones and they range from $10 to almost $200. I don't want to spend too much but I want something thats quality. I've also read about some types of modifications people have tried like adding foam and taping the pads to a board. If anyone can help me out with their experiences I would greatly appreciate it.

I just got ddrmax2 bundle for christmas and I also bought a mad catz beat pad. Well I want to get good so I started to modify my pads. I first started to mod the konami pad that came in the bundle. I first taped it to a board and started to play only to find that because of excess plastic on the bottom and the way the pad was folded in the box there is a bump right along the bottom arrow that i can't seem to get to lay flat which is annoying because I can't slide my foot smoothly to the back arrowing causing misses. So then I decide I'll try the mad catz pad. Well after getting that one completely modifed (taped to a board and put plastic covering over it) I'm horrified to find the front arrow is sticking down. At first I thought it was the plastic floor covering but after removing that it still would be continually stuck down. So now I have to return that pad. Has anyone else had a similar problem with the mad catz pad. I want a second pad that will be functional but not cost alot and plus I heard once its modified the mad catz one is fine. Also does anyone have any ideas on how to get the creases out of the bottom. I thought maybe using a hair dryer but I don't know what that will do to the sensors?

Glad you experimented with the Konami pad for the XBOX before I did. I was going to attach it to a board as well. I am using it on a carpet which is bad I'm sure. I need to rig a good alternative without spending $200. I have read about many pad options. Is there a thread or site that lays out all the 3rd party and mod options laying out cost and performance.

Something that i did when i taped my soft pad to a board is undo the edge seam. Then pull each layer of the pad tight one at a time and tape them independently of one another on to the board. No bumps at all. Just make sure you line all of the layers up properly
