Hee hee... I played "double" for the first time today. Kinda confusing. I don't know if I trust eBayers to sell me expensive stuff like that with complicated electronics... I mean, some of the established companies' dance pads aren't that great, but at least (IMO) there's a better way to address that with a big company than with an eBay seller.

I'm thinking about getting a pad from www.buynshop.com that seems similar to the Red Octane Ignition pad, but half as expensive. We'll see. I'm also interested in getting "Pump It Up" for my PC, but I'd be doubly interested if I could just use the "Pump" pad for my PS dance games (since the pad comes w/ a USB/PS port converter), but I'm waiting on customer service to get back to me on that.

Also... that video is crazy. He's doing double with his back to the screen for most of it. And he actually looks like he's dancing! I feel like I'm marching or something on the easier songs.

DDR is great. Fairly accessable to everyone, great party game, and although most people are a little frightened the first time they play (hey, I was, although I played Pump before DDR) it doesn't take long before you start to group the arrows into patterns and not have to think "ok, there's a left coming up. Where's my left foot? Ok, there it is!" Yes, I've been there. Anyway, give it just a little bit of time and you'll be making that 9-year old look like, well, a 9-year old making a fool of himself on a Dance Dance Revolution machine. I'd elaborate more, but I've got to go .

For home pads, you can get the cheapest kind for 2/$10 off of ebay, and many people put these on hard wood and staple floor covering over them to improve the quality. I personally just used them bare for about 8 months, and they wore out.

I'm currently using two Red Octane Ignition *ripoff* pads I won with a lowball bid on ebay. I'm not guaranteeing how they hold up in the long run, but I've been very impressed so far. Just search for "ddr ignition" and you can find these pads. They have foam on the inside and supposedly perform about as well as deluxe konami pads.

As for the games, unless you use imports you have a few choices: DDR, DDR Konamix, and DDR Disney Rave. I've heard Konamix is the best one out of those, but it only contians Konami original songs. They're not bad, but some of the licensed music is better. DDR has a couple of good songs, but most people think the song selection sucks overall. I personally wouldn't recommend Disney Mix unless you have kids that would get a kick out of it; from what I've heard there aren't as many songs and it's much easier.

DDR MAX is coming to the US PS2 later this year, with 20 (!!) extra songs over the Japanese version. That should be great.

Yeah, once I figure out what pad I'm going to buy, I'll probably buy some sort of pad + game bundle w/ DDR Konamix. Get a pad cover w/ it, and then attach it to one of those floor mats for office chairs from OfficeMax/Depot/Whatever... I've heard those lessen the sliding of the pad on the floor.

Anyone have an opinion on the BNS pads?

The ripoff pads I bought are supposedly the exact same thing as the new BNS Deluxe pads; I've heard good things about the BuyNShop stuff and have been enjoying my pads so far, but again I can't speak for how they hold up in the long run.

*crosses fingers*

Alright, I picked up two imitation (I think) "Ignition" pads and the DDR Konamix game in a package deal... $99.99, including shipping. Ordered some pad covers from Red Octane, too.

Dance Dance Revolution

This game is crack-addictive.

I first noticed this game a few years ago when vinyl and I went downtown to a comedy club, got there too early, and for lack of better alternatives, decided to throw a few quarters into a pinball machine at the nearby arcade. They had some weird dancing game machine near the pinball machines; I thought the kids playing it looked stupid, but the game had a certain intrigue.

Last Fall, Cleveland got a Dave & Buster's; my friends and I tried a variant that they had (Pump It Up) and thought it was great fun. Recently, a friend got the PSX version of Dance Dance Revolution and some pads, and we tried it. Finally, a few weeks ago, I noticed that they have a PC simulator of DDR called Dance With Intensity, so I bought it and a cheap PC pad.

Wow. This thing is just a total blast. It takes a while to get used to ('specially if you're a white boy like me ) but it's just an amazing game.

Anyone else play?

Two words: home version.

When you reach a certain age, you come across a choice in life. Either you decide that your dignity and pride are too important to do something stupid, or you decide that life is too short to be hung up on yourself, and if it's fun you'll try it, even if you'll look ridiculous doing it.

I didn't mind looking stupid in front of a group of people

I even played it again at the Orlando get together (and I think I may have played it even worse than I did in Atlanta). But part of the fun is embarassing yourself in public.

Seeker and I didn't mind looking silly.

Well, I've only played it a couple times, but decided not to invest the hours necessary to memorize the different dances.

My FRIENDS, on the other hand, are sort of obsessed with the game. One guy bought two dance pads and has, like, 3 different versions of the game. They'll get together and have little dance-off competitions. It's so sad. I'll come by and just start cracking up when I see what's going on...

I rule at the game, then again I can play it anytime! I have the home version! I have only played it once at the arcade and that was when I sucked at the game!

When we had our annual memorial weekend party, that game was the most popular thing going. As a result, at least four people bought the game.

I've played the home version of DDR before. My cousin bought it and two dance pads a while ago. I sorta got used to it after a couple games, but I still suck at it. Not to mention I look like a fool. There's no way in hell I'd play this in public, though.

<-------- Will take pictures when sfsdsfdsfdsfdfsadsdfsfdfsdfsfd brings said home version with him when he visits her after the bar exam. If the quantity of money is sufficient, I'd be happy to post these pictures somewhere on the web. I accept paypal, money orders, and personal checks.
