I have to admit .. i was a big gamer when i was 13 .. and my hardware was a Sinclair (ZX) Spectrum .. i then found something more fun : girls ..

so .. when I then turned back to the computer world (in 1994) i was addicted to 3d FP shooters and Pinballs .. (RPGs take too much time to read stuff) ..

i don't really know why a bought a PSX 2 years ago .. it came with 2 games .. i played 15 mins .. and then .. i have not seen it for a very long time ..

and then i go to japan .. and i see a Game i could not believe my eyes: Dance Dance Revolution ..

you actually have to DO something to play it

so .. once i got back, i got my PSX, had it modded .. got the games .. got the mats for home .. and i think it is awsome !!!

anyone else here into it ?? what is your story ??
any other hints, tips , tricks games ??

there is a new game in Japan now called "Para para paradise" .. but i cannot see how that could ever be implemented at home .. uses motion sensors

I like DDR, but I found that Pump is much more fun. Pump is played on the computer and the pad is much nicer than the ddr pad. Also there is five contact points rather than four and the music is Korean instead of Japanese.

I have ddr both for DC and PSX. It is a party game no doubt. Big in Asia.

DDR is a damn good game. Granted it is a slow started, and no one wants to play in public, but once you're willing to get over the fear and "oh, that's stupid" factor, everyone I've ever met loves it.

Favorite Song: Stomp to My Beat on Another

DDR Rocks

I like it so much that I had a Korean 3rd Mix imported and put it in a local arcade (and I've never even purchased an arcade game) That would be the reason Cleburne, TX has a 3rd Mix machine even though it is pretty lame as far as everything else goes. People either seem to love it or hate it. The people that love it are hard core. Competitions, contests, tourney...they are all for it. So yeah, I dig DDR.

i agree all the way, all of you guys that tried ddr, have to try pump it up! the pad is so much better, that once you play on it, you won't want to even look at the cheap ddr pad. i don't know about the arcade, but if you're looking for something to play at home, get the pump pad...oh, and it's slightly more expensive here in american since it is only sold in korea. you have to get it shipped here. i think the price is around $80.

(and believe me, i looked on yahoo .. all i got was
"Pump It Up Magazine - devoted to penis enlargement pumps." go and see for yourself .. no kiddin

Pump it up is definitely pretty good, but I guess I'm used to DDR more. Pump it Up is a little buggy for the PC, however. I'm not as into the Korean songs as the techno-popish stuff of DDR. I found Bust a Groove merely ok. DDR and Pump it Up are much better. You have to play them before you can understand why.

Let me just start by saying that this is one of the best games I have played. I don't have a dance mat, but do have one of the little controller dance pads.

I have had such fun with this game.

I was wondering, for anyone that plays it. What are some hints that you can give?

I have Dance Dance Revolution Best Hits.

Right now I am playing the songs in normal mode.

I seem to do okay when there are beats that are just one direction, or a "jump" (ie left + right or up + down), and multiple directions, even changing fast.

Where I seem to get hung up at is when its a combination like up + left or up + down or down + left or down + right.
Especially if those come in the middle of other beats.

I want to try my hand at an actual arcade game, but until I can master those moves, I don't think I will get very far. Anytime a song has repeated combinations noted above like up + left, I always lose.

Any hints or tips are greatly appreceiated.

Thanks.

get the mats and practice at home if you want to master the arcade. when you get the maps, you can make mods to them to make them more sturdy.

My advice: playing with a controller is only good for practicing on getting a beat to a song down. Once you can pick up (and carry) the beat to a song, the controller becomes a worthless tool in the world of DDR.

I also recoomend staying away from songs like Butterfly. (:

DDR imports

Does anyone know of a good place to pick up the imports. I've found 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Best Hits, and Extra Mix at various places for around $60. I'm wondering if there a place anyone reccomends. I'm currently looking for the Club Mixes. Thanks in advance for the help.

Butterfly is one of the ones I do better on.

I had a horrible time on Dub a dub.

lots of rapid movements with the up+left kind of combinations thrown in between rights, lefts, downs, right+left, up+right.

Definately pick up the dance pads/mats.... they are what separates it from Bust A Groove...which is an excellent game in its own right...

Just a quick warning: Be very careful with your mats. I had mine stored next to a plastic box with somewhat sharp edges, and it tore them both up pretty badly. They're like tissue wrapped around electronics.

Still, you can pick up rip-off pads that work just as well at around $10-$20 at some places (Fry's!), so it's well worth it.

first off ... don't waste your time with a controller. I hate to sound harsh, but if you don't have pads then your not really playing the game.

once you get pads then do this:
get those hard plastic floor mats that you put on carpet so that you can use an office chair over carpet. I got mine at costco for about $15 each. then just take your pads and tape them down to the plastic using the thick, clear, packaging tape. and don't be afraid to use a lot. Once you've done that you should have a pad that doesn't move at all, and is on a nice hard surface for playing on carpet.

If your playing US version of the original ddr then you should look into getting the imports. in japan they are on ddr 4th mix, and it is a HUGE difference from the original. All you have to do to make these imports work is get your playstation modified, which is pretty easy these days.

I have been playing this game for over a year now, and it is by far one of the most fun games i have ever played. hopefully some of this info will help others have even more fun with ddr.

I just bought 2 dance pads off ebay, I hope to have them early next week.

I haven't even seen the US version.

I have been playing the import Best Hits release.
I should have 2nd mix soon.

I had to have my playstation re chipped to play these.
I bought my playstation 4 years ago and had it chipped because I found a import Gundam game.
It was an old 4 wire chip.

It worked fine until the latest Spyro release. It detected the chip and wouldn't play.
When I got the import DDR game, it also detected the chip and wouldn't play.

I have a new 8 wire stealth chip in it and all is fine again.

I love DDR.

Playing with the controllers is fun, but yes. I've been using it to get the beat down and what to expect from the game before I bought the dance pads.

I admit using pads would give you the best experience.

dance dance revolution

i went to dave and busters(kickass adult arcade thing) last week and they have the dance dance revolution machine setup. first off, i suck. i never played this kind of game with an actual pad before and its a hell of a lot harder than it looks. i thought i had rhythm but i ain got nuthin. the little 9 year old who was there whooped my ass. that thing is hard. i couldn't get cordinated. so away i went, defeated. but im no slacker, i powered up my power card and tried again. ok i still sucked but i discovered that it was a lot of fun. so are the ps/dc counterparts just as fun (with the pads and things) or was just the arcade experience that made me so giddy?

The arcade experience of DDR is much more fun than playing at home on a console with soft (or even hard) dance pads. But I think getting the home version is still more than worth the money. The home versions have a training mode where you can slow songs down and spend the time to learn the steps. There's also a lesson mode that helps to explain where to place your feet for certain sequences of steps. Once you practice at home, you can go to the arcade and have a lot more fun showing off your moves to the crowds!

yeah, I've seen people play this at D&B's and I think, "I want to try this, but only when there are not a lot of people there to laugh at me."

I got that chance last week, and I agree that the game is great! I am thinking of getting the pad and game for the PSX, just so I can improve on it.

BTW, after watching people play, I got one of the songs from the game stuck in my head. I don't know the name of it, but the singer says 'bounce with me' and 'bounce' a lot. Anyone know what song that is and who performs it? (I assume the title of the obvious song would be 'bounce')
