So it’s a bigger hard drive, has Astro Bot installed, and it’s different looking?

Am I missing the appeal?

No. Mid-gen consoles are a waste of money unless it's your first foray into that generation.

And this is why, Dan, I said it would have been better to wait until the announcement before posting a poll. I bet some "Yes" votes would have been "No" if they saw that price tag first.

Dan should do another poll and include an option for Fuck No! Not at that price.

Re: Will you be buying a PS5 Pro?

At this point, I'm not even sure if I'll be buying a PS6 when it comes out at whatever price they think people will pay.

Re: Will you be buying a PS5 Pro?

It really is a stunning price point. I don't know what they are thinking here. But yeah, it does make me worry (already) about how much the PS6 might be.

Re: Will you be buying a PS5 Pro?

I think PS6 will still be reasonable. This is very much a niche product.

Amazon is already sold out of the hard drives (they were in stock yesterday) thanks to the scalpers. I went ahead and ordered one from Target just in case.

It will be interesting to see how well it sells and is supported by devs.

It may end up being the Concord of consoles.

And yet they didn't even bundle in the right controller.

Yep. This isn't for the average person looking to buy a system it's strictly for the hardcore PlayStation enthusiast who wants the extra benefits. Sony isn't going to expect this is going to out sell the regular model. I don't watch his videos very often but the Mystic YouTube video discussing the reveal was well worth watching.

I don't expect the price to be as high as the Pro, but I wouldn't be surprised if the base PS6 is $100-$200 more than PS5 was at launch. A $599 digital-only PS6 wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I'm bracing myself for at least a $399 Switch successor too. Component prices are through the roof, and you're not really getting those die shrink savings you did in years past.

Re: Will you be buying a PS5 Pro?

Wait why don't you think the PS6 will be more than the PS5 Pro? Was that true of PS4Pro and PS5? Again it doesn't seem like component prices are dropping like they used to.

The only way I can see that happening is if this Pro price is an unmitigated disaster and they get humbled (or Xbox rises from the ashes with a cheaper price).

The waters are a little muddy because of the PS5 launching with 2 very different price points. The PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 digital edition all launched at $399. The $499 PS5 is more apples-to-apples since you're comparing consoles with optical drives to consoles with optical drives, and that was the better-selling (since it was more readily available) model at launch anyway.

I'm expecting a significant increase in price for the PS6 over the PS5, but I don't think Sony has any mass-market designs for the PS5 Pro. I think the Pro points to "PS6 will be expensive" but not necessarily "PS6 will be this expensive". But 2028 (or whatever) is far enough away that who knows what prices will look like? A $499 PS5 in 2020 is the equivalent of $600+ in 2024 dollars, at least if the first inflation calculator that comes up on Google is any indication.

Because you aren't going to get a high adoption rate at $700+. Sony knows it can't kick off a new console generation at that price point.

Re: Will you be buying a PS5 Pro?

Sony can sell the Pro at a profit since they already have a userbase from the base model. A fully new generation (with games that only work on new hardware) needs quick adoption and are usually sold for a loss at launch.
