Re: God of War (4/20/18- PS4)
Sorry to resurrect this, but I didn’t want to clutter PS5 thread anymore. I have to say, this game is so so good and worth the price of console alone.
I had no idea it had side scrolling aspects, along with huge boss battles and the fun as hell adventure aspect. Epic adventure it seems to be. From what I gather this journey is about revenge of losing wife and now protecting and raising his son? I don’t know, still early on.
But, this diverse gameplay seems familiar to other games, but also unique at the same time if that makes any sense. My only gripe is no map in hud. I always like to follow the arrow, but maybe the point is to not follow. I dunno, but I changed my tv picture setting to Vivid and it looks simply stunning. Even if it is lowly 1080p.
It’s nice you can take in the view from time to time. It’s hard to do in some games. I like games that have exploration and not just constant battles with enemies. That can get tiring some times.
Marvelous presentation and good voice acting. I don’t always notice in most games, unless famous actors are voice. But Kratos sounds like a gruff Clancy Brown. And Atreus is not bad either. Not so annoying as kid characters can be.
Just a terrific adventure game so far.

This game is terrific. A mix of genres that work so well. Great voice acting, marvelous scenery. Just an embarrassment of great game making. Everything just works. It’s pick up and play or play for hours straight. And all of that play is just good fun.
I have to admit though it is a tough game. I’m on normal or medium and even early encounters with big ones kick my ass. One guy took all of two blows to kill me over and over, but I overcame. That’s what makes this game so addicting, the challenge and the fun.

And the sequel is actually better in just about every way. Harder too.

Ugh harder? This is plenty hard. Need more health pickups. Trying to do all those rune chests to increase health. Only did 2 so far. But hard or not, just a spectacular and beautiful game. Is it wussing out to drop to easy mode? I hate to do bc becomes too easy, but has anyone done it and still felt challenged?

Do what you gotta do. We won’t judge you (besides the fact that you ruined a gorgeous controller). The new game has a difficulty between Default and Easy. I forget if GoW (2018) has that as well.

Here’s an idea: maybe don’t seek out “advice” from this forum and start doing your own research if you don’t like the opinions you are getting.

I wouldn’t say all that. I find most here truly helpful. And, I wasn’t referring to just me. This place can be judge, jury and executioner.

Towards the end of GoW, when I was going after the vakyries, I dropped it down to easy. Before that point I kept it on normal. If someone was one-shotting me, I just moved on to do something else until I was stronger or had more abilities or whatever.

how did you move onto something else? So far the game is quite linear.

Once you open fast travel you can start revisiting areas and hopping around to the various realms. So the story is linear but there's plenty of roaming to had once you get further into the game. Have you poked around the menu? There are collectables everywhere. So plenty to be hopping around areas to search for stuff.
Also, there's a realm later in the game that's basically a monster closet/boss rush that you can farm for xp and money to buy all the best gear.

I don’t know quite where I am. I just met the hot looking witch after Artreus shot her boar. A little beyond that where she was making blue floors appear and she told me about the realms. I guess that’s before things open up, huh? I don’t think I’ve unlocked fast travel or maybe I have and aren’t aware. But, I am reading everything and have subtitles on so I catch everything.
Are there side quests too or no?

I started playing this last night and I had to knock the difficulty down to story. I started on balance and I kept getting surrounded by draugrs and dying. I beat Ratchet and Clank on normal, but I gave up on playing on balanced after dying three times in the early area before you meet the guy who made the leviathan axe.

I usually give it ten or more deaths before I give in to lower. Each time I make it further and further, it’s such incentive to keep trying, despite so many deaths.

I guess I’m still in beginning. Despite 10 hours or whatever that wrap-up showed, which I know to be inaccurate. It says 7% completion which could possibly be true.

Decided to start this again myself having only ever gotten about 8% into it. Tougher than I remembered.
I"m about back to where I quit last time so let's see how far I get this time.

Just curious, but where was the part that made you quit before?

I'll chime in when I get there, it was a little after the wartorn realm with the light guys (the first realm you transport to). I don't fully remember but do remember this part.
Basically the tutorial ended when you get into the cave where you throw your axe to move the spikes doors, then you meet the serpent and the witch, and then get to the realm that I'm in now, I wasn't much further than this.
It is worth noting that the % is how many trophies you have and it doesn't always correlate to how far into the game you are.

Count me among the crowd that was finally pushed to play this because of the sequel, hoping to dispel bad memories of the button mashing when playing on the PS3.
I’m a little ahead of Oldboy, having met the hot witch and finished the first region, but I can only return to Midgard so I need to play more. I find it frustrating, though—getting killed too often, having to look up too many puzzles, and not knowing what to do. I also had to drop it down to story mode and am willing to keep playing to see if I get more comfortable, but I’m wondering if the game may just not be for me.

I finished the first elven world section and started on a few side quests for the dwarves. Some of the puzzles are a little hard for me like the ones where you have to hit the runes in a certain amount of time to open chests. I takes me 5-10 minutes to open them. I like it so far and this is my first God of War game. It only seems like Kratos only says "Boy" most of the time....

Jumped from 8% to 10% in trophies finally so I know in caught up. I don't think I was effectively upgrading my armor and weapons on my first attempt at this game cuz this seems easier now.
Trophy % is a bad marker for distance in the game but it does feel good to be back into new territory (I had gotten through Inside the Mountain but didn't beat the boss apparently)

I just finished Inside the Mountain. That was a long section. I went around exploring after that and randomly ran into a traveler. I then proceeded to get my butt kicked.

My first traveler was a frustrating experience, until I realized I could deal with them later. I forgot about the dwarves, those guys are awesome.
Wait until you try Niflheim, although I'm pretty sure it's entirely optional. The Muspelheim trials weren't too hard. I might have dropped the difficulty to easy by that point as it was almost the last thing I did.

Omg. You guys are scaring me a bit here. Not in a bad way, but in I hope I don’t get too frustrated and want to quit way, but loving so far, so I can’t seeing shelving this. Just got to finish R&C. Wish I was a multi-game guy.
