Woot has a lot of Switch games on sale. Most of them are region free versions and not ESRB, but Odyssey is $39.99 there. https://www.woot.com/category/electronics/video-games

  1. NEVER buy memory cards from Amazon. NEVER. NOT EVEN FROM AMAZON Itself. Oddly enough it was because of the Switch that I found this out. Bought and official Sandisk memory card directly sold and shipped by Amazon. Didn't find out until a year later that it was a complete fake. It stopped downloading games on my Switch and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Finally popped it into my computer and used a program to show it was only a 32 gb card. Amazon didn't give a damn about it. Told me to go kick rocks even though they were selling the card. It's because they mix stock that comes from the manufacturer direct and that come from their third party sellers that they keep for a fee. It's unbelievably shady and they don't care.
  2. This is Nintendo. We're still working with 1080p here so a 512 gb card is quite sufficient. TotK is the largest game and it's only 18.2 gb.
  3. Nintendo Online - it's only $20/year for an individual membership. It includes being able to play a selection of NES, SNES and Gameboy games, as well as F-Zero 99, Tetris 99 and some other things. The most important feature is cloud saves. The Nintendo Online + Expansion pack is $50/year and adds N64 games, GBA games, Sega Genesis games and the expansion packs for Splatoon 2, Animal Crossing, and Mario Kart 8. I'm a huge Nintendo fan but don't get the expansion pass. I only get the family membership.
  4. I would highly suggest a procontroller. It will be $50 at most retailers in a few of days. Nintendo is having a black friday sale that includes pro and joy con controllers for $50. Mario Odyssey, Pikmin 1+2 $30. Mario Maker 2, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Switch Sports $40. Tears of the Kingdom $50. And various consoles on sale as well.
  5. Besides the BF sale the cheapest way to get first party games is Decker's favorite way he described above using the vouchers. I personally prefer physical (game preservation and I still don't fully trust Nintendo with digital media).
  6. I have a screen protector on mine because the screen is just plastic and could get scratched pretty easily. Plus I have young kids.
  7. Yes browsing the eShop really is that painful. It's not your internet connection. Use dekudeals to browse and keep track of prices.
great info tanman. Thanks for getting me started. I do have the Pro controller on the way and I did buy a SanDisk 1.5 tb card from Amazon. Perhaps I won’t get a fake or terrible one. I got some of the games you named, plus others. 10 all together. I don’t plan on undocking it, so no need for a screen protector. I did get the $50 subscription as I would like to play some N64 games I never got to. Is GameCube games not listed for some reason. Why would they skip an entire, great console?

But, sincerely, thanks again for the great info.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

If you do buy a card from Amazon, use a program (google it, please) that will basically write dummy data to the card to verify the size.
Also note that the vouchers only work if you're a Nintendo Online member (which again is a minimal charge with all the benefits that tanman so eloquently laid out)
Space is a problem but mainly with unoptimized or graphics intensive 3rd party games (like look up how much NBA 2k takes up). Nintendo does like black magic or something to keep the size of their first party games really low.

ok. so, what is this voucher thing? I am set up with Nintendo Online, but really couldn't make my way around it. I'll have to take a look longer when I have more time, but I would like to buy games digitally. this disc crap is not from me.

In regards to the microSD card, how would I get my PC to read it? I don't have a slot to insert it in.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

As I have said multiple times, Vouchers are 2 for $99 for Nintendo Online members. Each Vouchers can purchase one of the following digital games. Including some pre-orders.
https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/ga...ZS#sort=df&p=0

If you buy $60 games you save $20 on two. If you purchase $49.99 games, you save nothing.

If you are a Costco member, you can get $100 eShop credit for $90 here. You can add that $100 credit to your Nintendo account and buy the Vouchers with it.

does the online subscription not let you play GameCube games? i've heard all other Nintendo systems except this one. Why would that be?

I don't think anyone here works for Nintendo. You would have to ask them.

so, you can't play them huh? seems odd they would skip an entire generation and yet still have Sega games to play. oh well. I still have my GameCube hooked up, but the controls are so outdated on the actual Cube, so would have been nice to get those I never got around to or repeat things like Eternal Darkness, one of my fav games of all-time.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

I'm curious what Gamecube games you're dying to play again. Off the top of my head most of the top games are released in some form (or a sequel) on the switch, with the exception of something like Eternal Darkness or Rogue Squadron (and I guess Metroid Prime 2).

Oh I guess I'd love a Viewtiful Joe port too.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

I always wanted to play Shadow of the Empire. But there are licensing issues with that one.

Great point that most are available for purchase on the Switch and remastered.

I actually have Viewtiful Joe in my Cube right now. haven't played it yet, but it's there. funny you mentioned that. I would also love to play the GC Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I loved that as well. But, I'm sure emulated somewhere.

Since you have your GameCube accessories available, you have more controller options. There's a GameCube controller adapter.

I actually saw that really quickly on Amazon. looked pretty cool, but I don't think my original WaveBird would work even with the adapter, is that correct?

If it's not a misprint seems like Tears of the Kingdom is going to be 30 bucks at Walmart soon.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

All set up, downloaded some games. The N64, Sega segments and popped in SM Wonder. Only bc I got it before Odyssey. Just wanted to make sure system worked. What a small piece of wonderful machinery. I’m getting excited to play some Metroid again. Hell, can’t wait to play em all!

Do you put Switch in sleep mode or shut off completely?

I know, but is it best to keep Switch in sleep mode like PS5 or off completely if not going to be playing for a day or so?

It doesn't have a HD, so it doesn't make a difference if you keep it docked. Just turn it off and it goes into sleep mode I guess.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Holy shit! I actually just played this as a handheld to one of my most wanted to play games ever. I always loved Space Harrier. Used to play in arcades. 2nd fav arcade game of all time. Then I heard about the sequel, I think, one time before, but never got it, never played it. I just opened the Sega emulations and found that game. Space Harrier 2. Wow! Just wow! I can’t wait to play on big screen or even little screen. I’ll tell you, never in a million years would I have undocked it. Just no interest in handhelds. Well, this certainly changed and blew my mind. So cool. If another console comes out and does the same as this, but better, I’m totally on board. What a fantastic dual layered gaming system.

There’s 129 pages. I only took up like 4 maybe 7-8.
