Venting or looking for advice?

How powerful are your guns now? Are you modding them?

Not venting at all. Really just curious as to why they did that?? Again though, I'm only a level 17 so I'm guessing you can make the crap guns more powerful as you rank up?

I've modded Kellogg's pistol (aka "Bessie") and a few others so far.

I still use one of the very first guns I ever picked up in the game (as one of the 4 guns I switch through) and with level 4 mods it 1 or 2 hit kills most people I come across.

Just a normal 10MM. I maxed out all the perks related to pistols since that's pretty much all I play with other then one laser pistol.

Huh. Well... I have no idea how powerful your guns are or what you may be doing wrong so I'll tell you what I do.
Spoiler:

1. Pick a gun type and stick with it... at least at first. I like rifles as you get in hits at distance and they also include shotguns. Shotguns pack a powerful punch in close quarters. You can pick up a shotgun and a .308 pipe sniper within the first couple of levels.
The guns I'm using with my level 17 character are:
Combat Shotgun (close)
Combat Rifle .45 cal (mid range)
Pipe Sniper .308 cal (long range)
I also keep a pimped out 10MM for small pests.

2. Perks. Select Rifleman (if using rifles). Gun Nut and Scrapper are also essential. Take a rank whenever available.

Sneak is your friend. A successful sneak hit gives 2x damage. You can get (or build) a .308 cal silenced pipe sniper for one shot distance kills at very low level. Plus the ninja perk gives enhanced damage multipliers on sneak kills. Taking out one or two (or more) enemies at range before a gunfight is a big advantage. Trust me.

Perks that enhance damage, criticals, action points or VATS should be carefully considered.

3. Weapon mods. This is where gun nut and scrapper come into play. Scrapper should be obvious. Scrapping junk and weapons yeilds rare parts you NEED to make the best mods.
Gun Nut. Make the gun as powerful as you can by making a powerful receiver. Do NOT make an automatic receiver, that will nullify your rifleman perk. Every time you rank up in Gun Nut try to make a more powerful receiver. Find or make full stocks. Do NOT make a grip. That makes it into a pistol.

My Combat Shotgun does 105 damage per shot and I still have more improvements to make. Your guns should be doing similar damage.

Re: Fallout 4

I appreciate the help but...I'm definitely not the type who should be playing this game I mean....I made it to the institute at level 17 and I have ZERO perks unlocked. I carry guns that are 27 in strength and above. I've been missing right leg power armor since the beginning of the game.

The institute gave me a headache - don't worry, not going to spoil anything. Game is still great for me though - it really is one of the best I've ever played.

Does anyone know if Piper will get pissed if you remove all of her apparel?

I don't quite know what to say to that. I can't imagine why someone would choose not to select perks. You have them available, I assure you.

Funny, I was wondering this today. I just got a Hazmat suit the other night which makes me want to explore every puddle I find. But so far I haven;t found shit in water and was wondering if it was even worth the radaways to explore.

Yep. Finished her quest not long ago. I agree she seems a brawler but when it comes to a fight she whips out a double barrel shotgun. I thought that was odd. I wonder what the optimum weapon for her would be?

Re: Fallout 4

Some of the companions are really easy to get max affinity with (and their connected perk). I've already maxed out 7-8 of them.

Re: Fallout 4

The good thing about the companion perks, if you get it and then that companion turns hostile towards you because of end-game choices, you still get to keep their perk, even after you kill them.

So you definitely want to make certain friends before you finish the story, so you can keep ALL the perks.

Sorry, what I meant was that I'm still in the process of maxing out the standard perks for charisma, strength, etc...

Re: Fallout 4

I finally banged piper and got the perk so naturally....I replaced her with codsworth lol. The warm embrace (or whatever its called) that you get from maxing out piper really helps with health and I THINK it lowers your rad level as well - good stuff.

I'm actually addicted to this game now - I've been holding out on building anything for myself as I wanted to unlock more first (basically, I wanted to collect a ton of stuff and rank up a bit first) I'm seeing so much more available to build now but I'm still going to hold off for a bit.

OK, I'm probably just totally misunderstanding but since I didn't quite understand this at first and put too much in some of the base stuff thinking I needed to max it out before I could choose any of the perks, you don't have to max out any of the SPECIALs before you can start choosing perks. For example if you have luck at 5 you can (and should, if you care to level up faster) choose idiot savant, you don't have to get Luck up to 10 first.

Thanks, I haven't been applying many pints to luck but will start to. None of the other perks in the chart are available for me to select yet.

That's the trick to it. In order for them to be available to be selected you have to max out your primary levels at the very top. Once you max each section out then you are allowed to select any of the perks from your categories. The only one I opened up all the way was the Charisma perk section.

I'm not buying this - once you have even a single point in a SPECIAL, a perk becomes available to add points to. If you have 4 points in S for example, the top 4 perks are available to select.

Correct. You only need to level the base stat to the point where you can get the perks you want. This is why people obsess about the "build" when they allocate "SPECIAL" points at the beginning of the game.

Oh ha, didn't know you have to add the points from the base perks..... Hey, don't make fun of me, it's my first time with a fallout game.

EDIT: I've fallen even further down the dumb ladder with this game - I get it now though, you can select the non-core perks based on how full you have your core perks.

Think I'm going to max out my resistance to damage to first - I'm a level 20 and was weak sauce this whole time - bumped up to 10% resistance and noticed a huge difference.

I found a superb melee weapon underwater, by total random chance:
