I'm confused, how have some of you attended E3 before? I thought you can only get in if you have press credentials. I feel it's safe to assume that none of you have those

It used to be like that. You had to be in the industry to get in (for the most part). Now it seems like anyone can walk in. I stopped going years ago. At this point, I get the news right away and some of the demos are even available online etc. It's just not worth it for a few stickers and XXL Shirts.

To be fair, most of the Rare team from the N64 days were leaving before Microsoft bought them. That's why Nintendo didn't pony up to keep Rare. Microsoft basically bought a studio name and a few IPs that they've barely utilized.

They're easy enough to get if you know people who work in the industry, or if your company has some ties to it. I've been a few times, and I can go whenever, but some years it's a real cluster-fuck and not worth the time and headache.

It's been a while since I've listened to any of Yahtzee's reviews, but that video really nailed it. My favorite two quotes, that really sum up how I'm feeling these days:
Video game consoles didn't always need marketing events that resembled political rallies because they basically sold themselves. "Here's a thing that lets you play fun games," they would say. "Which games?" we would ask. "These ones," they would reply. "Ooh, those do look fun," we'd conclude.
I personally would only buy a next gen console if it had an exclusive game that I really, really wanted to play, but it would not be a healthy consumer product relationship. It would not be a console providing something I want. It would be a console holding something I want hostage.

I always found Yahtzee insightful, but his Schtick wears on you after a while.
Apologies in advance for wall of text, but my thoughts on the big three going into E3 are...
Nintendo:
Right now, I feel like Nintendo has completely gone off the rails, and I think I'll handle the WiiU the way I did the Gamecube and N64. I'll pick one up late this generation for cheap and buy the top 5-6 Nintendo developed exclusives. The only thing I can think of that might change that plan is a killer Metroid or a Mario that is better than Galaxy (which I hardly think possible). I also have no plans for the 3DS. I think the next generation might be the one where Nintendo finally goes the way of Sega and becomes strictly a developer/publisher. They are still, for my money the absolute best in the business at making games, but the Wii/DS novelty act has run its course.
Sony:
Sony seems to have learned from some of their mistakes with the PS3 and seems to be focused on core gamers with developer-friendly hardware and interesting new IP from their stable of studios. They basically handed the 360 a bunch of exclusives simply because games were too hard to port to PS3. Their strategy seems to be that they want to simplify and catch Microsoft in delivering a polished online gaming/social experience. I'm optimistic about the former and skeptical about the latter. The number one thing they are certain to screw up that will severely undermine that strategy: They will not package in a cheap USB headset. Still, I lean toward the PS4 right now and might even consider a Vita if remote play works well.
Microsoft:
I have no idea what MS is doing. The overlay for live TV seems superfluous and frankly kind of goofy. I anticipate they will pay for some exclusives, but I don't find their in-house development compelling at all, as shooters and racing games are kind of a dime a dozen these days. They seem to be making the same mistakes Sony made last generation, though it did help Blu-Ray win, so who knows. They basically want to leverage their existing user base and brand recognition to become the center of the living room experience whether it's TV, movies or games. But the difference between now and 2006 is that the types of people who own Xboxes are generally the type who don't mind having a controller or remote control in their hand, and they are also likely to have phones or tablets in their hands that do the other things MS is trying to do. I don't know...maybe I just lack vision.

Big whoopee deal, I have the Wii U, but I'm not going to buy it. I have the first one on Xbox and PS3, mainly for the achievements/trophies (and wicked artworks to some extend). But after realizing the Wii U got no reward system like Xbox and PS3, I'm not every excited on any of the titles, maybe I get it when it's $10 or something (can't say no to cheap games, hahaha).

My interest in Bayonetta 2 is near zero, but point taken. It's a decent exclusive, but I don't think it sells many consoles...if any.

re: Official E3 Thread of Microsoft's Self-Inflicted Misery (June 10-13, 2013)
I think Microsoft is way too confident right now due to the success they had with the 360. It was pretty much the lead platform for game development released on multiple platforms and people don't seem to mind paying to play online.
Sony seems to have learned from their mistakes and focused on the concerns from the developers and the consumers. Their first and main focus for the PS4 is a gaming machine, and anything else it can do is purely gravy. I'm intrigued to see what they plan on doing with PS+ with the PS4.
Maybe it's just me, but I really don't care for handhelds anymore. The Vita looks like a pretty machine and all, but for me when I want to play a game, I want to sit in front of a massive screen with the surround sound blaring. I just really hope Sony doesn't make the mistake of forcing Vita on people. It will find it's footing with more people with a price drop and some better games.
