I'm guessing system pre-orders? There's no way they will pull an Apple and drop the system this week...with 0 games.

Might get the release date, but don't recall usually getting price information a full 5 months from release.

If they don't tell us the price now, how will we have time to get second jobs to pay for the consoles?

So at what point during the conference will some Internet douche in attendance disrupt the proceedings?

I sure hope they actually show some games for this console. Maybe that is the biggest secret of all. Maybe there are no actual games being made for it.

Re: Xbox One: This Thread Requires An Always On Internet Connection

Fuel for the fire from neogaf via CAG:

- MS's paying devs to not mention the PS4 version of games. If they don't mention exclusivity for Xbone, assume it's on PS4
- Stage 2 of DRM talk to be at Gamescom, no rental strategy (that's a lie), stage 1 was Thursday, and a clusterfuck
- Cloud processing is just for DRM. MS approached third parties, EA/Ubi really behind it, Activision not so much (and he doesn't get why)
- DRM is going to be much worse than it is now, but no one's saying how
- Mirror's Edge 2, remake Prince of Persia, Word of Tanks (exclusive) to be at MS Conference
- Paywall for XBL confirmed, even for F2P
- Dead Rising 3 to be at MS conference + one other Capcom game, both get exclusive Xbone DLC
- No online paywall for Sony
- Sony isn't talking DRM, hasn't leaked
and

Its so much worse than you guys think....So much worse.
3 Hours until implosion.

Should be interesting to see what I come home to today. Will be taking my son and wife to the Museum of Science & Industry here. Can't wait to see the carnage :)

I guess. KingBroly on CAG shared it. Link is above.

I've no idea how reputable that source is, but just skimmed some bits of the thread. If MS truly requires people to buy a Gold membership to pay any games at all, I can't imagine how they don't lose this generation in a landslide.

just sharing more from KB on CAG but supposedly that user has a strong track record dating back to GTA: San Andreas, so, yeah...

Not all doom and gloom yet, just something to pass the time until showtime. :)

The only way that works is if they go subsidized models only, and even then, they're going to get clobbered.

Unless the box is free...

Nothing I've read makes anything sound any worse than the earlier rumors. Microsoft is avoiding direct questions because, frankly, their strategy is a cluster fuck of ineptitude, which is par for the course during every Microsoft beta phase (being the first 6 - 8 months of release).

That one sounds like pure FUD to me.

Let's stop thinking of games as plastic commodities shall we? It's a 30 year old model of distribution that needs to go out the door.

I understand the skepticism here but honestly until they are given a chance with this new model of distribution I have to reserve judgement. That seems fair.

It wouldn't prevent crap games but it would allow them to take more chances with a new IP since the distribution costs become little to none.

Exactly. With $60 digital titles that have limited resale value, people will buy less. Hell under this model, instead of people buying an untested franchise like Bioshock, they'll sit tight for three weeks until Halo 3 comes out. Why take a chance on an unknown game like Borderlands when you can just wait for CoD?
And you are assuming that digital titles will be $60. We don't know.

They can take more chances with pricing models since they know they will receive compensation throughout the life cycle of the title instead of only getting them from initial sales.

I may not buy used, but like many I'll sell to fund another new purchase. So MS/pubs may not be getting a part of my sale of Assassin's Creed III on half.com, but that money is going toward Tomb Raider. They take away my sale of ACIII then TR doesn't get purchased.
Lower prices would help. Rewards and purchasing programs can now come into effect. You could get a discount or credits if you purchase repeat titles in a franchise or repeat purchases from same developer.

You are still thinking in a tangible medium. Forget about plastic discs/carts.

The small minded "kill used, kill used, kill used" is astounding. They're trying to gain consumers that never bought new, and will never buy new by killing the revenue stream for the loyal consumers that do buy new.
Offering incentives to get people out of the disc based mindset would help.

Doesn't seem to be hurting Steam.

Everything you just said sounds perfectly reasonable...which is why it seems unlikely MS would do any of it. ;)

Here's the relevant quotes about the Xbox Live Gold membership:

I HAVE TO REITERATE I ONLY HAVE THIS FROM ONE PERSON

This could be a game of telephone. Everyone is assuming this "Xbox Live Gold & PS+ combo" applies to all games, when it could mean that MS is going to be adding "free" games to the Xbox Live Gold tier. So you'd lose access to the "free" games if your Xbox Live Gold subscription expires, but all your game purchases would still be playable (but not online).

I think steam works because we all know that our library will be around until valve shuts down. If Microsoft came out and told us that our xbox one library will carry over to every Microsoft console afterwards, there might be less complaining.

Even if MS promised that the Xbox Two (or whatever) would play Xbone games, I'm not sure that'd be enough for people to believe them. We've already been burned once (twice in the case of some that bought Xbox Live Arcade games on the original Xbox).

But Steam wins because it's hardware agnostic. It'll work on any PC, and also works cross-platform with Mac and Linux for some games, meaning you can play the game on any PC hardware it's compatible with, without rebuying.

It also helps that Steam doesn't have a monopoly on game downloads for PC. They're certainly the largest, but the threat of competition means they have to work hard to stay the largest, mainly by pleasing the consumer. MS can piss off all Xbox users, but if those users want to play downloaded games on Xbox, they have no choice but to give MS money.

Only thing that would make a "day one edition" desirable is if it didn't have DRM bullshit.
