There are still pre-order bonus item for digital purchases too.

They should have planned for two ways of ownership from the beginning. Forcing all digital on people was boneheaded.
My concern with buying digital is the pre-order bonus stuff, which I have a feeling will remain with retailers to keep them happy. |
Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
Yeah, there's still lots of options for offering exclusives with certain retailers, even with digital downloads. It's all a matter of how it gets implemented.

Agree... I can simply push a button and buy then download a game at 12:01am on release day and I don't have to deal with standing in line or going to a store? Sold.

The only physical discs I may end up with will be games that are on sale cheaper as a disc than their digital counterpart. If MS can come out with some better sales on digital games occasionally, I can see myself buying less physical games.

Yeah, they always deliver in the evening. Which if I work is fine. But if I am off then I want the release at 10am when stores open.
I have most of next week off so will be buying GTAV in store - otherwise I would miss out on an entire day of playing it since Amazon would drop it off at like 6-7. |

How many of you really have Tuesday's off work to play at 10am?
Now Sunday releases, digital would make more sense. |

Now Sunday releases, digital would make more sense. But otherwise only in the summer months, Christmas break, Spring break, Thanksgiving break, etc. So often enough that at least once or twice a year a new release makes me want to buy it locally at open. But I never go to midnight releases. Too many crowds. Too late for this old guy. And entirely too many students in line. |
Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
I've mentioned this a few times, but with Steam games they'll often unlock at 12 AM EST and 9 PM PST for me, which means i've been able to play a new release Monday night right away. And even then, some people will stay up late that night to play right at midnight for a few hours. So it's not about having a Tuesday off to play games most of the time.

However... if, say 3 months after release, a game is priced $29.99 for physical copy and still $59.99 for digital, it shouldn't be any surprise that the physical copy would get the purchase.
I think, with MS' all-digital strategy, they were trying to level the playing field between physical and digital retailers (because digital for them meant you do not HAVE to buy direct from MS). Also, fuck over traders/re-sellers. ;) |
Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
I still think they should be able to sell digital copies in store via redemption cards. Put those on sale at the same time as the physical copy. Done.
Since the entire point of sales is to get your ass in the door, they could require you claim it in person and just e-mail you the code and call it a day. |

I really wanted that Ducktales game, but missed the preorder bonuses. At this point, I'll probably wait for a digital sale or forget about it entirely. |

This, I think, is the unspoken problem with digital, at least from a company wanting to make money perspective. Both MSFT and Sony have shown that they're willing to have pretty decent sales/PSPlus deals on digital games. Part of my mentality when buying a game is that I want to have a copy before it becomes hard to get; true, nowadays there are very few rare games, but if I see a decent deal at launch I'll probably pounce. I've noticed that with digital games, I'll just wait, because it'll always be there, it'll never go up in price, and if anything it'll be cheaper later. They lose that impulse buy, and perhaps even the sale if I never get back to it because something newer or shinier has my eye. Granted, this isn't true for multiplayer games and not everyone has the insane backlog of games that I have.

I see Major Nelson is rolling around to Microsoft stores showing off the Xbox One. There is one coming to Scottsdale. I thought it could be fun to go check it out. I looked at the date and it is December 3rd.
I'll have already been playing mine for 2 weeks by then. |
Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
Anyone want to place some wagers on which launch title needed a "full lobotomy" of the audio?

If it's a first party title, then it's Ryse.

Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
On Xbox One, games are just games. Whether it's a downloadable retail game or what would formally be known as a Live Arcade game, they're all the same in the Xbox Live Game Store. One consequence of that decision is that there is no demo requirement for games on Xbox One. "Not all games will have demos like Xbox Live arcade games have had on Xbox 360," Microsoft's Marc Whitten said. Microsoft's new policy matches the one PlayStation has had for the entirety of PS3. That decision has sometimes been criticized, as games would less frequently offer demos on PlayStation Network. "That said, we are going to work on lots of ways to make it easy for you to find and try new games on the service," he told IGN (via OXM). Retail games will also be offered digitally on Xbox One. However, unlike Steam, games cannot be preloaded before release. "Not at launch, but you'll see us do this and much more over the life of the program," Whitten pointed out. You will be able to play games as they download, however. |
Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
Maybe every game can just have a sort of trial mode where they let you play for 30 minutes one time or something? Seems like that would be an easy solution.

Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd
Wow... way to go backwards to match the PS3....
