Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd

What (important) features are we losing from the Xbox 360?
We are losing the Xbox guide, and the fastest way to check your online friends, send/read messages, active dowloands, etc. I haven't read how to do that now.
Will background music/custom soundtracks still available?
I was reading about Xbox Music, and the only way to play music from that service (which is similar to Spotify) is to have it in Snap Mode, a small window with Xbox Music, losing screen space of your game. I know that you CAN'T do that right now with the Last.FM app in the Xbox 360, but I've always thought it would be cool if you could.

Custom soundtracks/background music still available on the X1.

Are we? Watching the video seems like it's pretty damn fast to get out of a game and to the dash.

Technically yes, we're losing the 360 guide. But we're not losing it's functionality.

Ok, I wasn't sure if that is what you were referring to.

I hope they improve the UI to get rid of the frustrating waiting/loading times for things to display that the 360 has.

I'm wondering if MS isn't planning on snap-ins to replace some of the guide functionality as well. Like, players can say "Xbox, snap in friends" to get your friends list, or "snap in downloads" to quick check on downloads, without having to pause what you're currently doing.

I'm guessing dedicating RAM and CPU cores to the system OS will significantly help in increasing the responsiveness of the UI.

I'm sure that has everything to do with the fact they have pushed the dash to the limit on the 360 to do things it was never intended to do.

x1 and PS4 will both be fine since they are reserving so much ram for the OS.

I never used streaming to my 360, but for those who did, this is going to suck.

But Microsoft made a concession to openness, with a backdoor on the first two versions of the Xbox. That enabled people to use the console to display and access content they owned outright and had stored on PCs in the home.

Unfortunately, that door has been removed from the Xbox One. Last week the company confirmed that the console won’t come with the “media extender” feature that enabled people to use the console to stream music, photos and video from a PC.

So far we mostly have details how the Xbox One handles music. It turns out that it will not be able to play music you own and have stored on a PC or home network, at least not directly and without a fee.

“For now it’s a $10 subscription per month on the console to get access to that,” Porter (left) said, adding that more options may come after the Xbox One is launched.

In other words, if you want to play your music collection through the console’s default music app, you’ll have to subscribe to the premium version of the app, which costs $10 per month or $100 for a yearly subscription.

Then you can upload your music collection to Microsoft’s cloud storage service, and stream it back to the console via the Internet.

That’s in addition to the $60 per year that you must pay for premium Xbox Live Gold membership to use the music app in the first place.

Why? It’s partly because the company is still new to this stuff and figuring out what capabilities to include. The initial emphasis is on building a tight, crisp service and not one with loopholes and extensions.

But the company also is trying to get more people to subscribe to its online services, which will make more money per user than a console or operating system that’s replaced every five years.

Maybe I’m too old-fashioned, but I’ve watched Microsoft spend more than a decade encouraging people to use their PC as the hub of their digital life. For a while it even said families should have servers at home to securely store and stream their music, photos, videos and files.

Now it would prefer that you move that hub to a Microsoft data center, accessible for only $10 per month.

I never streamed either because of file format limitations, but pretty lame for a system they're trying to make an all-in-one media box.

Wow, that's fucking ridiculous. Like, that's so stupid, I can't even believe it's true (even if it's Microsoft we are talking about).

I'd love to know who is calling that feature a "backdoor", if it's Microsoft, that's a real slap in the face.

Really, does no one else use their 360 to stream music? That's pretty surprising. I tend to use my HTPC to do it nowadays, but I used to use that feature all the time. I find it ridiculous that such a basic feature will not be available with the Xbone. I'm sure the PS4 will support it (and much more, when it comes to local network streaming).

Doesn't Sony have their own music store on the PS3? They probably saw that model as an easy way to make a quick buck. No one is crazy enough to pay for that. There are too many devices that you can already do it for free. Unless people are just going to start throwing away their old 360s once they upgrade to the One.

Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd

I use Netflix, Hulu+, Spotify, and HBO Go to stream anything I need streamed. If I want music I will throw my phone into one of the docking stations scattered around the house. Or play the music on my PC through the speakers attached to it.

I have never streamed music from PC to Xbox and out home theater speakers.

That includes the original Xbox, the 360, and I had no plans to do it for the XO either.

If I want to stream music I use an Apple TV. If I use custom soundtracks on the 360, I put the music I want onto the hard drive.

Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd

I've never been a big music streaming guy, so I never used any component to stream just music.

To be fair, Xbox Music has existed for awhile as a subscription service, so it's not like they're pushing something entirely new just for the One. Still kind of lame to remove something that's been pretty fundamental for Microsoft systems on PC and console.

<s>Wow. Shitty. I used the feature once or twice on my 360, but I was hoping to at least be able to stream picture slideshows and such. Like, showing family vacation photos to other family to make them jealous.</s>

Brilliant! No one needs this obsolete feature anyway! Go MS go!

:)

Yeah, I have plenty of ways to play music and streaming it through my very expensive console is something I only played with to see what is was like...

I use Spotify and broadcast it to my Home Theater via Chromecast. That's about it. And while I know it'll never happen, I hope Spotify shows up on the PS4 or X360 (it won't since they both have in-house brands) and allows in game streaming.

Re: Xbox One: Thoughts Turn Ironic on November 22nd

I use my 360 all the time to stream videos and other items from youtube or other video services that doesn't show up through the app. It's actually really freaking handy and its much nicer to watch something in 46" inches of 1080p beauty and 7.1 Surround Sound than a 22inch monitor with a couple of crappy speakers. So there is one LESS reason to go buy a bone. Thanks Microsoft, you are making this decision easier all the time.

So there's no network connection with the xbox one? I find that hard to believe.

So does this essentially kill custom soundtracks unless you rip to the hard drive? What about plugging in an ipod?

I'm sure MP3 players will still work. Well, 75% sure...
