re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

This is even more like Steam now without disc installs. Shouldn't this be considered more awesome now?

Get your day one digital titles, no dealing with the "hassle" of swapping discs. You still get the lack of resale options for your games. Isn't this win, win, win for those that wanted a Steam like experience on a console?

That's true. It was a huge mistake (it certainly wasn't intentional), but in the end it did make the Coke brand even stronger than ever and has dominated sales ever since. Maybe the same thing will happen here.

Disc installs will still be required.

I think when people think of a Steam like experience, they think about getting games on sale daily and sales with 50-90% off regularly. I don't think the hassle of swapping discs is a big deal.

I was gung-ho for getting an XBoxOne in the beginning, but then they just piled on a bunch of things that made me not want one. Forced Kinect, a bunch of TV stuff I'll never take adavantage of, and an extra $100 out of my pocket.

I'll buy one down the line for the exclusives. Can't live without my Forza and my wife will kill me if she can't play Fable 4. I value my life too much to die.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

So with this new reveal of the demo mode, I'm pissed. I'm pissed that we didn't let Microsoft share their vision with us. I'm pissed that tons of people didn't get to spend $500, excited to open up the box and start sharing whole games with their friends, thinking that in the long run they'll cut their expenses down by switching off buying games with friends and sharing, only to find out they can only play for 15-60 minutes before having to buy their own copy.

The massive wailing around the internet would have been EPIC. And we've lost all of that. We are truly a selfish, horrible group of people.

That wailing would have been nothing compared to what would have happened if demo mode hadn't been revealed in advance, and people only found out about it after spending $500+ on the console.

I'm more amused by some people's 'forgive and forget' attitude.

It's like your buddy trying to rape you one night, and the next night he apologizes and you're ok going out and partying with him

This is still Microsoft we're talking about here, right? Are you serious?

The demo mode thing seems more legit because it wasn't the focus of the pastebin, but who knows? But when that guy says they were in negotiations with publishers, doesn't that mean that at the very least, this was a publisher opt in program and not some universal, every single game has it thing? So even best case scenario for the consumer, we get to share games, wouldn't the publishers, who are so concerned about used games, just not opt in or otherwise limit the sharing? Sure maybe there's the capability of sharing a full game, but what publisher is going to agree to that, especially while the title is new?

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??

The word "epic" is tossed around more than it should be, but this truly qualifies as an epic failure of marketing, the likes of which has probably not been seen since the debut of New Coke.

This train wreck suggests that the DRM policies were half-baked, there was a failure to internally communicate what little details there were regarding key initiatives, there was insufficient focus group testing of the new initiatives to get an idea of the blowback coming, there was a failure to clearly define the positives of the vision, what positives had been defined were not clearly or effectively communicated, they failed to control their own message and allowed themselves to get pushed to the corner and could do nothing but block until they had to tap out, they failed to identify or designate spokespersons who could speak intelligently and in a non-condescending manner while trumpeting the benefits - seriously this was so, so bad, and, finally, they lacked the courage to see the vision through by refining and defining the message.

Who has confidence in them now? I'm not really interested in a Crazy Ivan console. It's like that nightmare when you wake up (in dream) and realize you have a final exam that day in a class you signed up for and never attended. Microsoft lived that dream - "Oh sh!t!, we have to debut the new console today - what they hell are we going to even call it? Well, for one, we need to call it Xbox. Xbox One! That's it! Go, go, go!!!"

They really got caught with their pants down with the news that Sony was moving earlier than expected with the PS4. This is what happens when you try to trot out a new console before it's ready.

Yeah buying into the notion that this very healthy multi billion dollar industry needs MS to save it is laughably stupid.

If studios are concerned about going under maybe they should't allow the bean counters dictate what gets made.

It's really not that easy; while I agree that the industry isn't in such bad shape and needed a savior or any of that crap from Microsoft alone, its pretty damn hard for small studios to get publishing deals or funding to make games, especially since there's less of a middle ground in game development these days. And those that do get funding have no choice but to be at the whim of publishers pushing deadlines and budgets. That's why Kickstarter became so popular. It's not hard to see where the billions are going in the industry either.

Oh, you can add DIablo 3 to the Xbox One list of games as well. While not officially announced, I spoke to some Blizzard dude at E3 who announced it by omission to me...something along the lines of "yeah it's coming out on next gen systems, but i think all we announced is the PS4 version so far"

I'm tempted to say it's some hacker trying to prove why 'always online' was a bad idea, but that message would have made more sense last week.

Funny, speaking of Microsoft, I read this article last night:

http://penny-arcade.com/report/artic...-with-publishe

Note that I don't think it's Microsoft trying to screw the small developer as much as it's trying to get some kind of quality control without doing it all themselves, as well as getting exclusivity, but the policy sure isn't helping.
