Maybe I'm being too optimistic here, but the thing is : most of these complaints about the game are in fact still fixable. You'll never make Ryse or Knack into a good game because their problems are too much a part of the games' designs. Here most of the issues are about content, payouts and balancing. All that stuff can and probably will be fixed later with patches and other balances. Certainly that's no excuse for putting out a less-than-stellar game, nor is it a criticism of those who score the game lowly now - it is what it is. But the game as it exists today may not be the same game we might be playing a few months from now.

 Agreed. For all the shit thrown at Titanfall, it was a fun game when it came out, and it has only improved in all the little and big fixes that have been done to it. I fully expect that Bungie has adopted the same attitude to updates that Respawn did. We'll only see Destiny get better. But today? Apparently it's like Beta+. :)

Metacritic link for those interested - http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/destiny

Giant Bomb and Escapist also gave 60s.

For what it's worth, I don't get the hype complaint as a reason for some low scores since Destiny is hardly the only game to get significant hype leading up to it's release.

But the game looks amazing and runs very well with little to no lag. The issues I have with it are related to the game itself.

But just imagine if the time spent on porting it across four platforms were instead spent on improving gameplay...

Good point; I didn't think of it like that. I was looking at it more of a having to cater to the lowest common denominator.

Theoretically, I would assume that the designers and content creators would be different from the programmers that work on porting to different consoles so that actual gameplay wouldn't be affected, so the two probably aren't related as far as time goes or at least fairly minimal.

However, I think a better case could probably be made for things like events, encounters or bosses being limited based on the power and capability of older consoles and having to run properly across the board.

The subclasses work just like equippable items that can be swapped back and forth. Yes, you'll lose the doublejump if you switch to the second subclass, until you unlock it there by levelling.

Why they locked off one of the two subclasses until level 15 is a total mystery to me, and one of several very poor design decisions in this game.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

I think the problem is, as it was mentioned before, that Bungie had a lot of decent/good ideas but were not quite sure how to implement them in the game. Nor were they really sure what they wanted and still want Destiny to be. Yes, it has some good graphics and nice environments but I'm still not sure most of the time what I am doing nor why I am doing it. Also, the way they just throw different level of players together in a hodgepodge pvp match makes me not want to play that anymore when I already have a level of frustration with those types of games modes. I'm not sure I wanted to get constantly reminded that I got "pwned" just because I am considered one of the "noobs".

(My house is still being renovated to make it a little more wife-friendly, so I haven't been able to play my shiny, new PS4 LE quite yet.)

They are the exact same complaints I've voiced on here, so I obviously don't disagree. I just think it's obvious that the hype is playing a role in the score, and it shouldn't.

It didn't change the world, so it's a 6.0? What? Gaming journalism, folks.

And no, it's not just about Polygon, even if they are the absolute worst site out there. As I said, I think we'll see a lot of scores that reflect it not living up to the hype rather than simply looking at the game objectively, where if the game had come out of nowhere from a smaller studio at this absurd level of polish, it would have been an instant 8.5+.

I'd probably rate it a 7.5 myself based on what I've seen, and I'm still pretty confident it will get better over time. I think my earlier Warframe comparison is apt. Every update, that game gets half a point better IMO.

It's probably a topic for another time and thread, but as games get more update-driven, and as streams and betas become more prevalent, and as gaming journalists crawl further and further up their own asses, I think review scores are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Titanfall meta'd at an 86, despite similar overhyping.

FWIW. :)

So the only non-remake AAA that's going to deliver this year is Mario Kart?

It wouldn't be the same people, but it's how time and money are allocated. Of course, if it weren't going to multiple consoles I suppose the budget would have reflected that.

Yep. That's how it works. The subclass is completely blank and you have to rebuild from scratch. Now you can switch back at any time, and everything will still be there. But yeah, stuff like the double jump will be gone and you'd have to grind it out again. But since I haven't really dug too deep into what it takes to upgrade your armor to rank up past 20, it might not be terrible.

the multiplayer in this is, hands-down, the most god awful thing any company has ever produced. i should be more specific, the match-making is. i just jumped into a match to see if it was as bad as the beta. yup, just as bad. i was matched with 2 level 20 guys. ok, that's great. but the opponent was 3 level 20 guys. so i have basically no chance with a level 8 guy, because my armor, weapons and skills aren't nearly at that level. wow. what a complete and utter crap fest.

People are specifying that aspect as PvP for obvious reasons, the co-op is really well implemented. PvP, nope.

"I agree with most of what you said in that detailed, well-thought-out review, but that single, somewhat arbitrary number at the very bottom of the page...? Grrrrrr! No wonder everyone hates you!"

I mean, I know that's an exaggerated take on your stance, but I would argue that the score is of significantly less importance than the text it's meant to represent. I'd also argue that in the case of this review, the score isn't overly out of step with the body of the review.

(FWIW, message board posts by people whose tastes I've come to know and trust are my main resource, so don't take this as me being some holy defender of game reviewers or whatever. :) I am of the opinion that game journalism has a lot to offer, despite its many flaws, and I'd hate to see it vanish in favor of Twitch streams and 900 page megathreads on NeoGAF.)

That was my thoughts on multiplayer. I barely scratch my higher-level opponents with a head shot, they clip me in the arm and I die instantly.

Yup. That was my experience when I tried it a couple days ago. I posted almost the exact same description.

I can only hope it plays a little bit better when I'm leveled up. It's completely unfair for new players.

By the time you're leveled up, those other guys will be decked out in top-tier Crucible and Raid gear. ;)
