Yup. That was my experience when I tried it a couple days ago. I posted almost the exact same description.
I can only hope it plays a little bit better when I'm leveled up. It's completely unfair for new players. Rank doesn't matter in PvP, other than the unlocks on your skill tree. Rank 20 weapons and Rank 5 weapons do the exact same damage according to their class. Armor works the same way. The problem with matchmaking, and it's a problem with every single FPS I've ever played, is not that there are overpowered characters, it's that there are people that only play FPS games and are vastly more skilled than most of you (and especially myself as I suck) will ever be. I absolutely hate the fact that I have to play against people like that. It's like someone who plays softball all of a sudden having to step into the box against Kershaw. Even if most of the players are balanced fairly, there's almost always that one guy who gets 15-20 kills in a row. That's why getting the platinum in Killzone Shadow Fall nearly destroyed my will to play anything online again. Fortunately for me, the PvP trophies in this game aren't nearly as horrible in that one and I'm already about done with it. But if you think getting Level 20 armor and weapons will help you, believe me, they won't. The skill tree will. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
I saw your post. I'm not convinced that's how it works. I first tried PVP when I was level 8. I literally could not kill anyone. I was lucky if I finished a round with 2 kills. I have 500+ hours in BF4 so I'm fairly competent in FPS's (I know these are different games, but still).
I tried again yesterday when I was level 15 with better gear to see if it was any better. I managed a 12 kill streak and ended with a 3+ KD in one round, and every other match I was over 1 KD. My skill tree was not drastically different between level 8 and level 15. There's certainly nothing in it that affects weapon damage. I'm pretty sure my drastically better gear made the difference. At least it felt like it did. Maybe the weapon didn't do more damage, but my armor definitely helped me live longer. I didn't die instantly from one shot like I did when I was level 8. When I was getting hit, I could return fire or run for cover and heal a little bit. Edit: If the weapons and armor really don't matter, what would be the point of acquiring the fancy crucible gear when you reach level 20? |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
i agree with 19k's assessment. i literally cannot kill more than 3-4 people per match.
i'm not necessarily the most skilled player, i've played titanfall a fair amount and would usually be toward the top 1/3 in my matches. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
When I'm not messing around in Battlefield, I'm almost always in the top 5 in a 64-player match. This game is completely unbalanced in PvP. I don't know how it's supposed to work, but it doesn't.

Re: Bungie - Destiny
I'm thinking the likelihood that this will continue to thrive and keep a robust online community for more than a year is not looking too good, that is unless they make some drastic changes in the next few updates, but even then, I doubt it can compete for people's time like the newest and brightest will. That is the inherent flaw of mostly multiplayer online games.

People are specifying that aspect as PvP for obvious reasons, the co-op is really well implemented. PvP, nope.

Re: Bungie - Destiny
I don't know but I thought the difference between normal crucible matches and Iron Banner were the O and D ratings were turned off
The Iron Banner is an alternative to the standard Crucible game mode. Instead of keeping players on an even plane by restricting level abilities (things like damage boosts, higher defense ratings, etc), the Iron Banner is the Crucible of Crucibles. Players will go in with all of their level abilities (or lack thereof) remaining for a no-holds-barred battle to the end. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
Here's an article about Destiny being too empty - can't say I disagree, especially with this statement:
Destiny is huge and vast and impressive even with only four playable zones. But it’s also empty. A shell of a promising universe with nothing inside. |

I'm not sure what my destiny is supposed to be. :(

that's a pretty good assessment. in borderlands, it seems every corner there is enemies and loot chests. there are like only 5 "golden" loot chests in this you have to find and some random other ones you can get. if this was meant to be a loot type game, they really screwed the pooch on that front.

Re: Bungie - Destiny
Got my system set up today and this game rocks.

Re: Bungie - Destiny
Wasn't paying too much attention and dissembled a really nice plasma rifle. Really wish they would at least have an option to undo your last action. Oh well, I'll add that to my long list of other things they need to fix in the game.
Made it to Venus tonight. Just about to level 18 now. Bumping the missions up to hard has been fun and challenging though. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
did the Dust Palace strike mission on Meridian Bay, Mars .... only took an hour and 14 minutes .... LOL

Re: Bungie - Destiny
I finished the story tonight and hit level 20. Tried out a couple of the higher-level strikes that unlock. Fun, but still a bit tedious.

Re: Bungie - Destiny
Ran into my fort serious "Bug" las night. We had been playing the story when a friend jumped on late and the other two left (Chess and kanjji). I went to switch to another character, my Titan. Both primary and seconday guns acted as is there was a 2-3 second delay firing...or not fire at all. Both would sometime just fire on their own. When I switched weapons the second Fusion would automatically build up and fire, then not fire at all. I'll load him up again this morning and se but the timing was bad...we were doing the second and third Moon Mission.
Good run for us last night doing a good deal of the Moon Missions. We got three of the special drop missions.Got my first taste to the Defend which we liked. Venus opened up but still seem to have a lot to see and do on the Moon. Cannot say enough on how well the Moon looks...it's a stunning map. Seems like kanjji who has been in our party doing the whole story will be out next week. I've got two other characters somewhere on various parts of the Moon. I think me & Chess will roll with someone else next week...just wish he got on a tad earlier. So I might keep a look out for some heading starting the Moon. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
OK, after playing a little more at Level 20+ (I'm 22 now), I was a bit incorrect in my previous description of ranking up, especially when it comes to the other sub class.
Because of how they designed it for the first 20 levels, I just figured that every time you up your rank, you unlock the next skill in the tree, and so on and so forth. The way it actually works is that every one of those skills is tied to a certain amount of XP. XP is always important, even once you hit 20 and can't actually see how much XP you get. This is important due to the fact that the second subclass starts out empty. Turns out, the second skill tree unlocks with the same number of XP as the original skills did. So while you start off without skills, it doesn't take all that long to unlock them, at least the first group. For fun, I enabled my second subclass and killed a few enemies on the moon and turned in a bounty. The first skill was unlocked. Obviously, you would have to grind still, but it's not as bad as it seemed. Too bad Bungie couldn't make all of that more clear. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
I just replayed the very first mission because I missed the trophy for killing 25 fallen with precision shots. Anyways, I breezed through it because all the enemies were level 1-2 which was expected, but they were dropping gear that was level 18 (my level). I managed to pick up two guns and a pair of armor gauntlets that were better than what I already had equipped.
It's a nice bonus that the loot levels up with you, but the enemies don't. |

I really feel like they (and other sites) held the hype and their own expectations against a fun and polished game with a few flaws. I mean, I know that's an exaggerated take on your stance... ...but I would argue that the score is of significantly less importance than the text it's meant to represent. I'd also argue that in the case of this review, the score isn't overly out of step with the body of the review. |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
I read some of the Gamespot review and basiclly their gripe...con...is the repetive nature of the play, rinse, repeat.
That can almost be applied to the majority of the games...like COD & BF. Take gun, shoot enemy, go to next mission, shoot gun, kill enemy, rinse and repeat. Did that a lot in Borderlands where you played the entire stoy part and replayed again to level up and replayed again to level up. The Game Critics are all hyped on Evolved where you run after a Kraken killing everything around, take it down, rinse and repeat. If the game didn't have the side quest...yes you do have to retrack here & there...then be criticized for not having more to do. It's funny but they do a complete 180° on the MP experience just raving about it. That's where some of the critic bias comes in...either leans MP or SP but not both. They rip the SP aspect but rave the MP...probably one reason why they're so hyped on Evolve. I love the game...the maps, the characters and layout. Not perfect but far better than what I played on the 360. We still have some major DLC coming so there will be patches and updates no doubt. I would like to see "Horde/Firefight" mode though being put in.... |
Re: Bungie - Destiny
Has anyone bought the expansion pack for $34.99?
