Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Someone made a comment that the $99 may be to ensure that they wouldn't have to sell any pre-orders for less than the retail price. Although, I'd think that $70 would be high enough and $99 would just scare off anyone wanting to pre-order the game.
I don't expect game prices to go up at all. They'll just keep doing what they're doing now: splitting off some of it for DLC so the "complete" game costs more.

I truly hope this is a placeholder as Amazon has said, and not some test of what we're willing to spend.

Watch Dogs does look cool, though. Is that a Sony exclusive?

Yeah, I'm not buying the Vita just for a feature I already don't use on the Wii U. Now, if I could transfer the game to the Vita and take it on the road with me...that's something to shout about.

Really looks like more 360 controller type ergonomics.

As far as I know, you cannot transfer PS3-specific games to the Vita. It has to be a game (downloaded, I bet, not disc-based) that clearly indicates that it is compatible.

From what little I've seen on some of the Game sites like Gameinformer the two biggest points taken were the 8 gigs of DDR5 and Blizzard partnership. They're saying the "8 gigs of the DDR5" is a big win for game devs

The good news for Sony will be that using a PC style base should make ports of PC games easier. So they might be able to get more game released to the system than they would otherwise.
I guess now we wait until E3 for pics of the system, more game announcements and some pricing info.

The iPhone comparison is invalid because, as you pointed out, it's more akin to the controller which they did show.

Used games are still a thing, Gamestop stock sighs relief:

I'm going to chalk this up to translation idiosyncrasies, but this still reads as rather ominous.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.
I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.
"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.
No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.
Do you agree, I asked?
"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's my expectation."
So if someone buys a PlayStation 4 game, I asked, you're not going to stop them reselling it?
"Aaaah," was Yoshida's initial answer, but seemingly only because he'd forgotten his line. "So what was our official answer to our internal question?" he asked his Japanese PR advisor. The advisor stepped in but didn't seem to answer clearly, at least to my ears. Yoshida then took control again firmly:
"So, used games can play on PS4. How is that?"
I said I thought that was fine.
Interestingly, I also spoke to a Sony source elsewhere at the event this evening who told me that the anti used-game patent discovered last month was actually nothing to do with PlayStation 4 at all.
The patent suggested that discs would come branded with a contactless tag that could be recognised and read by your console, which would then bind it to you and prevent you from selling it on.
But whatever reason Sony did have for patenting it, it sounds like it wasn't for its next-generation console. Hopefully Microsoft will also avoid this ludicrous technology with its next-generation Xbox as well.

That's what I figured, so i'm curious how the cost is affected. I wonder if Microsoft will change anything, since it appeared initially to be one of the few advantages on the next XBox, at least as far as multitasking multiple programs and what not.

Totally agreed. I don't care what the console looks like. It won't be stupid, so why bother worrying about it sitting there when you barely look at it, let alone use it. Controller, features, and functionality is what matters.
The iPhone comparison is invalid because, as you pointed out, it's more akin to the controller which they did show.

Makes me think that the 8 GB of RAM thing really was a fairly recent decision and might have caused some internal re-design which made the physical appearance change.

Could be. Who cares?
If they come out and start failing all over the place a la RROD because of poor engineering reviews, then it's right to question all of that. For now people just want something to jack off to.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
My assumption is that they have 4 or 5 console designs ready to go. And they're waiting to see what the 360 looks like as well as what the 360 is priced at before they reveal the look and price of the PS4.
What I want to know is since there's no BC in the PS4, do I have to rebuy all my PS3 games for the streaming, or is there a way to use my original disc to unlock the stream (like how they had the UMD to digital conversion in Europe for the PSP Go)?
Also, re: used game blocking patent... isn't this technology essentially what they're using for their PS3 disc-based vita cross-buy unlock? From the disc you unlock the cross play, but it can only be done once. Or what they did for DC Universe online. Disc only worked once.

Obviously, Sony doesn't want to show too much of their hand, because it gives Microsoft time to adjust. You know there are people in meetings right this minute discussing whether the Xbox 720 should bump up to 12gb.

I'd like to hear from some tech wizs on the "GDDR5". From my understanding that type of memory is exclusive to Nvidia and ATI for graphics cards and no MB can support it...hence you don't see it for system RAM. Though it's simlar to DDR3 it's really more different. That's what everyone is reporting..."8 gigs of GDDR5". Pretty much all the high end gaming pc's use DDR3.

The more I think about it the more irritated I am at Suckerpunch's intro....what a dick move. I wish the game well (since I know people working there) but I'm less inclined to pick it up or even apply there. My brother n law used to be a cop, so I suppose I'm more sensitive to it... but essentially saying "Fuck You SPD" isn't exactly the way to sell a game. What a disappointment.
