Lack of DLNA sucks, but I still have my 360. I can use that for media streaming for a year until the Xbox One price drop (or PS4 adds it, whichever comes first).

Yes, they are the same in this regards. The difference though is that I can go shopping tomorrow for a new hdd for the PS4 where I couldn't for the One.

It didn't work that way on Monday, but it did by Wednesday.

Absolutely. If they're using standard 2.5" SATA HDDs like with the PS3 and the PS4, it's not a big deal since you can get a huge one pretty cheap and they're always getting cheaper. If you're using a proprietary drive like the 360 and XO, then it's a much more expensive proposition usually.

Do we know if Sony is still going to be encrypting to internal HDD like they do on the pS3? Because I find that super-annoying especially if/when your system dies.

I hated this as well but now with Plus and the automatic backup to the cloud it doesn't bother me as much. It really pissed me off when I had a level 10 Elite character on Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 and lost him when I had to replace my dead 60gb console. With the cloud I have it set to backup my saves, including the locked ones, once per day.

Yeah, it's a lot better, but I still have lots of PS store purchases I never re-downloaded because I've got a several-thousand item DL list that I could never fully recreate. Thank god I used the 360 for Rock Band, I couldn't even imagine trying to find every song I've ever purchased, let alone trying to re-download them again.

Sure. You could buy one on Nov 22nd. You just wouldn't be able to use it with the Xbox One.

True, but by the time you would need it, it'll be supported.

Is it even possible to store game data on an external hdd? I guess you can. Doesn't having game data on an external device affect the speed of loading content?

Yes you can store games on an external hdd with the X1. No idea in affecting speed though, I'm assuming USB 2 or 3 is still faster than reading off a bluray though.

Likely so. Are you getting your PS4 at launch?

Well what is the difference in data transfer from USB 3.0 versus SATA II? Because the impression is being given to future XO buyers that if you're concerned about disc space no worry...just use the external drive. I don't know to many PC Gamers that use USB 3.0 for playing games off of.

Whenever I use an external hdd with my computer or PS3 I can always tell there is some latency there that doesn't exist with files on the internal hdd of each device.

Most likely next year if Uncharted 4 looks impressive. If not, I may skip it this generation. PS3 is a bluray player and I maybe tried 4-5 games on it...don't wanna get burned again.

so i can't use it at launch. so what? i don't need it at launch. i may need it down the line, though, and it's far easier to just plut in an external HD than it it is to have to take apart the machine.

Re: PS4 Pre-Release Thread: No MP3 for You! (11/15/2013)

Well to me there are two main questions regarding the External Drive....

For XO buyers can you install games directly to them and not the Sata Drive and what about any performance issues?

For PS4 buyers if and when they inable External Drives can we save, transfer and backup game data and other files?

I mean the biggest single issue on the XO for me was no removable drive. i know many would say the odds of HD failure and filling it up were slim but that was before all this came out on game install sizes. I'll take a removable HD and no or little external support versus non-removable any day.

You will need it if you buy all of those exclusive launch titles.

And some of us have download speeds measured in megabits per minute rather than per second. What little I do download stays on the hd.

You don't have to think about it. When you get an error message that the disk is full, delete the cache for the 1-2 games that you haven't played for a while.

The hard drive debate again? Can't wait until this circles back to controller battery discussion.
