Since I don't have no history with the PS3 I cannot comment on the multimedia aspects but with the 360 it was a nice feature to have. Now with the newer Yamaha AVR I just stream music with it but I did enjoy throwing in the visualizations when listening to music once-in-awhile. If anything I hope they prioritize the USB Ports to except external storage. As someone on one of the gaming sites asked...what about backup and transfer of data? What about when you upgrade to a larger drive and need to move the data from the existing drive.
Overall I still think Sony has the right vision....it's just a bit rocky start and what some might not have thought of. Game wise...they're ok.

Well, that was uneventful....
1 thing that I am more disappointed with about the PS4 over MP3, CDs, etc is IR... did you not listen to your userbase about that for the PS3?
Oh well... I don't plan on using it to watch movies (like I did with my PS3, so not a big deal.

Still miffed (and don't understand) the PS4 not supporting the same Bluetooth remote as the PS3. These little, dumb unexplained things add up.

I still think they'll get there, but not before they take some bumps.

To be fair, this is kind of what Sony's doing with the PS4, except they're not charging you. From the way I read the FAQ, they're saying that DVD and Blu-ray playback are not part of the system firmware 1.5, but can be activated via registration ("you will need to download and install PS4’s day-one system software update 1.50, and then activate your Blu-ray Disc video capability with a one-time activation through the internet in order to play Blu-ray Disc films and DVD video content.")
That's how they're controlling the licenses that they pay for so users can have those features. It makes sense in a money-saving way for Sony. It's midly annoying for the end-user (especially if that registration is anything more than inputting your console's serial number), but free, so not a terrible thing at all. Just sucks that CD/MP3 playback isn't part of that activation.

I use custom soundtracks all the time on the 360 so the loss of this on the X1 is shocking to me. I am stunned that the PS4 isn't going to allow them. Taking away features that is not a dead media or is still very functional is an odd decision to me.
I am glad I decided to wait all this out for at least a year.

Nope, it is sexy, especially with the light bar.
My system won't be standing up, so it may not be as sexy.

Mine will probably be horizontal as well, and the way it's angled, I think it might actually look better that way. I even like the vents in the back, because they look like the back of a space ship or a vent on a sports car.

I think I'd prefer it if the top were all matte, but even as-is, the PS4 is already the best looking console I've ever seen. And no, it's not a fanboy thing. I think the upright Wii (you heard me) is probably my second favorite, followed by the upright 360 slim.

Call of Duty requires another 50gb install. If you buy Killzone and CoD, that's 100gb already gone! looks like I'm investing in additional storage sometime down the line this generation.

Re: PS4 Pre-Release Thread: No MP3 for You! (11/15/2013)
I'm keeping my pre-order after all...
Despite some of the "setbacks" this week with the DLNA, CD, MP3 and no external HD support I've gone back and looked at the whole picture comparing both systems. Yes...those are important issues but as it's been mentioned...and I agree...that it all boils down to GAMES!
It's been awhile since E3 when both systems were put on display and yes there has been changes; mainly in the MS side but some facts still remain on XO...
*I still don't like the fact you cannot remove the HD
*I still don't like the fact you still have to get the Kinect despite you don't need it and can unhook it.
*I Still don't like it it's being pushed more of a Media Center than gaming console
But on the "GAMES" SI feel has the edge and going back to past stories I could help but count the more "positives than negatives" ...
*At E3 Bungie showed off Destiny on the PS4...and there is exclusive content for the PS4 as well
* This weekend at Blizz Con, Blizzard will show of the highly anticipated Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on the PS4 which it has been officially announced for.
*Some of the very first in game footage ...if not most of...from AC:Black Flag has been on the PS4. And there is exclusive content for the PS3 & PS4
* The latest visual uproar between the PS4 & XO involves COD:Ghost giving the resolution edge to the PS4.
* There has been countless documented stories from the Indie Devs on how well Sony has helped and backed them with Dev Kits vs Microsoft and Xbox One
*Free-To-Play Games...with Warfare, Blacklight, War Thunder and Planetside 2 Sony wins hands down and these are not small size games.
*Mark Cerney...the "Bill Gates" of the PS4. Mark is the PS4.
I got the first Xbox for Halo and when the 360 came out got it for Halo but mainly GOW. Those two series consumed about 1/2 of my play time along with L4D, Borderlands and COD.. There is no more GOW...and Halo while has been fun has lost some luster. No more L4D and how many more ways can you kill in Dead Rising. Borderlands and COD are on both systems but same thing...how many more different ways can you play the games.
On the PS4....my, my, my...
*Killzone...never played the series and the new one looks amazing
*Second Son...never played the first and no doubt this one looks fun; lighting and the physics look outstanding
*The Order:1886...never have seen a game like this on either system. The time period for it...wow
*FTP Games...Warfare, Blacklight, War Thunder and Planetside 2...never played any of them
Knack...never seen or played anything like it. Say what you will but a game for all and totally new.
Some of my Xbox friends have tried to convince me to stay with the Xbox but when I ask about games they mainly point to Titanfall...which is like 5 months away. Other than that it's Forza or Killer Instinct...hardly anyone mentions Ryse. Then it's "what about Halo next year" to which I reply..."when Destiny comes out it won't matter" As a story I saw the other day pointed out..No real FPS Launch Title for MS which has been something they had with the Xbox and 360. They only have BF4, COD and AC:Black Flag to point to but then again so does other platforms.
I may loose a few friends on XBL but hopefully gain some here...some of which I've actually have in my XBL list. I didn't change my ship date on Amazon in fear that I would lose it so it looks like I'll get it by the following weekend. I read where some did change nd lost their pre-order all together. I figure I can wit one week....maybe.

Edit: Unless you buy them digitally.
I do think both MS and Sony should have put in larger HDDs if they wanted people to go digital.

The hard drive is set I'm not too thrilled about. With the mandatory installs, plus free to play stuff, I could see that filling up really fast. I know I can always delete to make room and reinstall later f I have to, but I'd rather not even have to think about that.
In the end, though, not a big deal.

If you're buying disks, there are no mandatory installs, other than the obvious updates and DLC.
PS4 temporarily puts data from the disk in the drive into cache, and that should be relatively seamless, because you can start playing with the data partially loaded.

You can. It caches automatically when you put in the disk, and you can play while the game installs.
The story did change from Monday to Wednesday though. On Monday, Shu gave the impression on twitter that installs were temporary and would delete automatically by calling them "cache", but I just looked again, and on Wednesday he clarified that he was using "install" and "cache" interchangeably. Yeah, I know.
The games do install, and you do have to delete them, but the difference is that you can play while the game installs in the background.
Here's the updated story.

Yes, the PS4 and X1 both require you to fully install every game. I thought we knew this for months? PS4 was just being vague about it, they never should have thrown the word "cache" around. You obviously can delete them at anytime if you want, and play while they install. Pretty much how the 360 works now, except the install is mandatory, not optional. I do this for every game anyways, but the file size is going to be a killer in a few years
I do like how even chess was confused, replying to me that "it doesn't work that way" then linking an article in which it does
