The light is the new way to determine which player you are. Instead of Player 1, you're blue, or red, or green, or whatever. The color on your controller will be reflected on the screen (this is how the Move works as well). Some of the more advanced features, like splitting the screen based on where which side of the screen you're on would need the camera, but that doesn't make the light useless without it.

And that light uses FAR less battery life than the even more useless Rumble feature. Though in fairness you can turn that off.

We'll see. I'm giving Sony the suspicious face on this one.

I find the lights on the Wii remote exceedingly irritating, but that's only because they are on the face of the controller. As long as this isn't too bright and faces away from me, it should be a non-issue. I'm picturing sort of a warm glow, like the Move controller.

Most everybody who has had hands-on with the controller loves it, so I'm optimistic.

I posted a brief history of the past 5 weeks in the Xbox thread a few days back just to put into context how I view the raining and pouring and to respond to "Why's everybody picking on Microsoft?":
  • 5/21: Announce the console and talk about nothing but watching live TV on it leaving gamers (the only ones watching) confused
  • 5/21: Our futuristic console has live TV, which tech savvy gamers probably don't watch.
  • 5/21: Show gamers The Price Is Right to remind them why they don't watch live TV
  • 5/21-6/10: Spend the next few weeks confusing people even more by not responding to rumors about your crazy DRM strategy
  • 6/10: Clarify your DRM strategy, and confirm that the worst of those rumors were absolutely true...and are awesome
  • 6/10: Family sharing may or may not be super amazing. Talk amongst yourselves.
  • 6/10: Announce the price of your box to murmering and scattered boos even before Sony announces their price
  • 6/10: Get humiliated (word used by Forbes) by your competition for your DRM policies, on stage, to an extended spontaneous standing ovation
  • 6/10: Insult to injury? Their box is $100 cheaper. Another ovation.
  • 6/12: Tell people that if they can't use your new console they should just stick with your old one
  • 6/15: Tell people that those DRM policies are built into the console and can't be easily removed
  • 6/12-6/19: Spend a week getting destroyed on preorder numbers
  • 6/19: Nevermind all that DRM stuff that we were so committed to and were trying to convince you was so great
  • 6/19: Also no more family sharing, even on digital content, because fuck you
  • 7/2: We're firing the Xbox president, and he's now the mayor of Farmville
  • 7/2: Firing the president 2 weeks after E3 was totally part of our restructuring plan. Everything on track. Nothing to see here.
  • 7/3: Replaced Xbox president with the person who brought you Windows 8

I guess you can add:
  • 6/28: Our $100 camera is required to ensure we can get you the best advertisements. We see you like Doritos.
Inconvenient facts are inconvenient.

Well, if we're going to be accurate all these "Xbox One is an ad box" articles stem from an interview with StickTwiddlers which was actually on 6/28.

Saw some stories on some game sites saying no more pre-orders on the PS4 Standard Edition at Gamestop...but bundles still available on Amazon...I ordered the Killzone Bundle with in a week after E3.

I just wonder if games will be a issue come release? I've got Killzone but I'm wondering if I should go ahead and pre-order another one just to be safe?

I don't think you have to worry too much about finding the games. But there is always the other option: all PS4 games will be available digitally.

Yeah, any potential software shortage will be very very short lived, and you'll have 5 free to play games (Planetside 2, Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution, DCU Online and War Thunder) along with the PS Plus Drive Club.

I wouldn't buy anything from Ubisoft at full retail, so that rules out Division, Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs. Also, I realize that there's an inherent appeal in Killzone being exclusive, but I'd bet just about anything that BF4 will be a better game.

I don't have a single game preordered, and I don't plan to.

Otherwise, Sony has been pretty straightforward and transparent with nothing even approaching the drama at MS, which makes for a quiet thread.
Started SRIII tonight. Man, what a blast. I had more fun in two hours with this than 6 hours of GTAIV.

If you weren't turned off by the goofiness of the first few missions, you're going to love this game.

I made the mistake early on of waiting to do story missions and just messing around, doing side missions and buying up properties. Later, I figured out that the hourly money you can launder is limited by the number of cribs you have, and you get cribs by doing story missions.

Well GTA IV was a major dissappointment for most people who loved the GTA III-era games.

Did you see the new gameplay trailer for GTA V? It looks absolutely incredible:

Not too many games out there where you can play a round of golf, get in a game of tennis, fly a Lear Jet, pull off a jewelry heist, repeal from a helicopter and shoot thru windows in a high rise, smack people around, lead police on a chase thru the desert, get in the middle of a gang war and sit with some friends for a nice chat all in one day....have to say the trailer is pretty impressive

Due to high demand? Now? They probably should've stopped in June. I suspect anyone who tried to pre-order a console a day or two after E3 from GameStop will not be getting a console at launch.

This has been the case with every GTA since San Andreas made you pick up fast food and lift weights. A thousand things to do, four of which are actually fun.

I mean I don't really agree with that but ok. It's certainly ambitious, maybe to a fault, but succeeds more than it fails (talking about SA).

Didn't really mean to go down an entire Saints Row vs. GTA tangent...will take that to the GTA V thread. Saints Row was really only brought up in the context of it being free on PS Plus.

Anyway, I'm a bit surprised they've been taking preorders for this long, and I'd be even more surprised if they have production capacity between now and November (I assume) to meet all of the current preorders. But it's really in Sony's interest to capitalize on this period of uncertainty (to put it generously) with Microsoft and get as big of an early lead in market share as possible.

I think I got mine in on the Wednesday or so of E3, but if I had to wait a bit, it really wouldn't be that big of a deal. Hell, if I thought I could make a few bucks, I'd probably even consider selling it.
