Just in case it hasn't made the rounds yet… looks like Club Nintendo will have a soundtrack promotion with honest-to-goodness CDs for those who buy Smash Bros. on both 3DS and Wii U:

Hyrule Warriors comes out today (9/26)... anyone picking it up?

I certainly am. I hope to try and score a Best buy DLC from someone.

I'd like to get Hyrule Warriors but am thinking about picking that up during a lull next year instead. I'm gonna let Bayonetta and its sequel scratch that itch for now.

How long was the first Bayonetta? I imagine I'd have to play the first before I start the second...but between Smash and Toad...I might not have time.

I remember the first Bayonetta being 10 to 12 hours, depending on difficulty.

I just sold my preorder DLC that came with Hyrule Warriors for half the price I paid for the game. The DLC is just two alternate costumes and they've already announced they will be selling all the different preorder DLC down the line. People are weird.

I guess I didn't know enough about Destiny Warriors. I thought this game was going to be a new Zelda game. It's a bit repetitive and easy. Good graphics though.

I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the N64, but I am considering getting a Wii U. How do Virtual Console NES/SNES games look on modern 50" HDTVs? These games were designed when 20" TVs were about as big as TVs got. Are they going to look really stretched out and pixelated on TVs that are more than twice the size they were designed for?

They look pretty terrific. The games are presented in their original aspect ratios, so they won't be stretched unless your TV is set to do that. Because everything's straight digital instead of going into a CRT with composite video cables or whatever, they're really sharp and well-defined. It depends on the art style, of course, but good looking NES and SNES-era games still hold up well today. My personal preference would be to play NES games on my 3DS and SNES on Wii U, for whatever that's worth.

The biggest downsides to the Virtual Console are:

* Limited selection / too infrequent updates
* Price points are kind of nuts
* It's not "buy once, play anywhere"

20 inch tvs were not about as big as TVs got back in the NES/SNES era.

Thanks. Why do you prefer NES games on the small 3DS screen? Do they not look good on a big screen?

I was looking at the list of VC games on wikipedia and the Wii U doesn't have any N64 games currently. Has Nintendo said anything about future plans for N64 games? I see that they are on the Wii, but not the Wii U.

I don't recall ever seeing any bigger than 20-24". I remember seeing 32" CRTs in the late 90s, but not in the early 90s. A 32" CRT is ridiculously heavy too, so I can't imagine CRTs getting much bigger than that. I thought it was only in the last 10 years or so when TVs have gotten really big, mainly due to LCD replacing CRT.

I picked up Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze at the sale price of $29.99. I had to delete Wii Fit and Zelda Wind Waker to free up enough space to *buy* the game.

Spend $40 and buy an External Drive and never have to worry about it again.

does a usb "thumb" drive work as an external drive on the Wii U?

DVDChris 10-01-14 11:22 AM

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

It'll sort of work. It can download files, but I've seen reports that playing games off a thumb drive stutter, or crash altogether. Nintendo recommends a powered external HD. I'm using a portable external drive with a Y-cable adapter to provide enough power.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

(NES/SNES VC games) look pretty terrific.
Please don't give Nintendo more credit than they deserve. The games aren't even sized to fill the screen properly top to bottom! It's not nearly as bad with the SNES titles but the NES games run in a little window in the center of the screen! This is incredibly distracting. You rightly mention their outrageous pricing - how hard would it be to scale the image properly for each $5 purchase?

The NES titles also have noticeable smoothing which is just ugly. The user should be able to disable this. The SNES titles fare better here as well. Unfortunately, it took the GBA releases and a new developer (M2) for us to get games that actually fit the screen and look good.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

They don't fill the whole screen? I thought they did on the original Wii?

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Nope. It's atrocious. They managed to make the games look worse in "upgrading" the VC for Wii U. I have actually kept all my games on the old Wii because it's a much better experience to play there.
