Re: LOL @ Ubisoft: ROCKSMITH new guitar based game Sept. 2012

Wow, I'm impressed. I picked this up based on the overall positive reviews.

The technology is really terrific. There is a bit of lag for me, but nothing too distracting. Being able to hear yourself play in various tones during load screens is just cool. The feedback that you get from the guitar while playing is so welcome here, and it's been the biggest weakness of Pro Guitar in RB3.

The game design and features are pretty blah for the price point, but easy to forgive once you focus on what it does have. The song list is pretty solid, and the technique challenges and mini games are a very fun way to teach (or reinforce) the basics.

The thing that really kept me from wanting to buy was hearing about dynamic difficulty. I wasn't sure how it would work, and Joystiq really took the feature to task because more experienced players would have to play easy again and again. But in practice, it seems like it has worked out for me. It remembers where it ranked your difficulty from song to song, and it seems to challenge you where necessary. I still don't like not being able to select a difficulty, but I don't miss it yet.

I'm looking forward to spending more time with it.

Can a mod update the title of the thread? Since this "lol" of a game has proven to be actually good.

I'm still shitting on it.
Anybody who thinks this thing is going to teach them how to actually play a guitar, is dreaming. Since everyone learns differently, there's no way a game can identify holes in your playing and bad technique, and that stuff is usually what separates the good players from the useless ones. This game is pretty much the Abtronic of guitar instruction. It should be noted I'm severely biased, though.

I don't think people who are enjoying the game and having fun learning guitar have any aspirations of being an amazing player. The fact I can play a Black Keys song for the most part that sounds like the song after only a few days is pretty awesome to me. Do I give a shit that I'm still a useless guitar player? Nope - because my kid thinks it's pretty cool.

But how are you going to trick the bitches into giving you head with that attitude? Or retire early off your lucrative guitar lessons business? You're thinking too small.

I'm taking lessons for the exact reason of technique. i am not quitting them anytime soon. This does however make practicing much more bearable as i find practicing where I'm at now boring.

...players will need an actual electric guitar to play the game. Judging from the videos, the game will come with a USB-to-TRS connector cable so you can connect an electric guitar to your console or PC.

Ok I just played Stone temple pilots vasoline. The first time I did it I got 83% accuracy which is pretty good but I wanted to try it again because they were stupid messups. The game would no longer recognize my Low E on the first fret so I restarted, then it not only didn't recognize the Low E but I had no tone in the game. Kind of disappointing bugs

You need a new teacher, then. My success rate with students is pretty high because I teach them technique using songs they like as lessons. There's just too many lazy teachers that insist on teaching people the exact same blues riffs over and over.

So nice of you to just assume that my teacher doesn't teach that way, which by the way he does. Every week my guitar teacher asks me what I want to learn. I play the song for him and he quickly works out the rhythm part of it and he breaks it down for me and we work on that.

Your attitude about everything in and of itself would make me not want to be your student, you are way too closed minded about things. My teacher wants me to bring by my ps3 so he can see how it plays as even he said it could be a very valuable tool in practicing. A good teacher knows what he is up against instead of just being blind to it. He will know how it is so that when he hears one of his students talk about practicing with it he may know what to show them technique wise that the game may be doing differently than he does. For instance I play my G's probably different than you do, whenever i see someone else play it, it looks so uncomfortable, but the way i do it works for me and that is going to change from person to person.

Nothing can replace a good teacher but there will be people who will quit because they think this game will teach them everything. How about opening up your mind instead of denigrating anything or anyone who might not do everything the way you do. Your arguments are just as laughable as the musicians who got all pissy when guitar hero came out screaming that it sucked.

At the very, very least I play some Dawn of the Chorded every night to work on my chord changes as I am still a bit slow on them, it is helping me switch quicker and easier, even without looking at my fingers most of the time.

Oh, and one last question. Have you even bothered to TRY this? From your earlier posts it sounds like you are shitting on it without even ever trying it, and imo that is the worst thing you can do.

re: Rocksmith: The way-official news and discussion thread

You told me that practice was boring. So I ASSUMED it was because you were not being given stuff you were enjoying.
As far as your assumptions about me go, I am the one of the top recommended teachers in my town by music stores and high school and elementary school teachers. I've never had less that 70 students a week, and have been teaching for almost 10 years. I wasn't trying to attack, just let you know there are better teachers out there if you were not satisfied.
I'm way too close minded about things?? Why, because I don't love the idea of Rocksmith?? No, I haven't played it, but I've followed it closesly and looked at lots of footage. I've seen way too many people with bad technique that learned from DVD's, books, and other methods where they didn't have someone watching their playing, so I think it's fair, based on what I've seen, that I can be sceptical. I'm pretty sure your spite towards me has more to do with the fact I made fun of PS3's jokingly two years ago, in which case you also blew that way out of proportion and had a bit of a spaz attack. Calm down. No one's trying to hurt you. I was just trying to help.

Ah, so you're afraid of getting replaced by a machine!

Look, people who want to learn by using Rocksmith don't give a rats ass about technique. They just want to learn how to rock out and have fun.

It's funny, we used to get all the high and mighty guitar players scoffing at Guitar Hero ... "Why don't you put down that plastic toy and play a REAL guitar!" and how that they've done that, it still isn't good enough? BLah, loosen up, and let people have their fun!

That is exactly what I was getting at.

And Fresh, I don't know what you mean about a comment about ps3's. If you made some comment to me 2 years ago then I certainly don't remember it and think it would be better if you moved on. Seriously, i have no idea why you would remember something like that. Sounds like you should let it go. You made your assumptions so I assume that it was ok for me to make a few of my own. What's good for the goose.....

And contrary to popular belief, seeing something in videos and reading about it really isn't even close to the same thing as actually trying it. It sounds to me like you had your preconceptions from the second you heard "Real guitar game with a real guitar" and just made up your mind from there. I cannot seriously take the opinion of someone who razzes on something when they readily admit that they haven't physically tried it.

That's great that you have been playing for 10 years (my teacher has you beat) but I can say that if you use the same mentality of "It sucks, don't ever try music games, they are the devil" then you are not the best you can be. To be the best you can be you know what is out there, you don't just scoff and lift your nose at anything that doesn't go parallel to your own thinking.

Also I'm pretty sure I said that I am keeping my guitar classes because nothing can replace a good teacher, which seems to be the exact opposite of what you THOUGHT I said. If you aren't going to read what people say and base your posts on what they actually say instead of half assed assumptions then you really aren't adding to the conversation.

Ok, I'm done ranting.

re: Rocksmith: The way-official news and discussion thread

I love music based games! I own a fully cymballed Ion rock band kit. I'm looking at 3 plastic guitars right now while I eat my raisin bran. I guess my problem just has to do with the fact that this game has really pushed the whole 'will teach you how to play guitar' and I just don't agree it will do an adequate job. Also, yes, I am afraid of being replaced by machines but really, aren't we all? I should mention, too, that I haven't been playing for 10 years, I've been playing for 20, teaching for 10. Accuracy's important when you want to try to 1-up me for your teacher. I'm not looking to be your board nemesis, or vice versa so the ranting isn't really neccesary. Peace, brother!

Ps - I haven't tried murder yet either, but I hear it sucks and I refuse to do it.

PPS - I only remembered the ps3 thing, because your name reminded me of Glass Tiger. Remember those guys??

I think if Rocksmith does its job and people start being able to play parts of songs that actually sound like the song they are trying to play, you get hooked and this could encourage them to go a step further and learn the proper technique. In the end Fresh this could very well bring you some business.

I wasn't offended or anything, just seems completely ludicrous to me to rip something apart because of what you heard. Do you avoid all the movies that come out and get bad reviews totally trusting the critics? You don't really know how it really is until you've tried it, you are basing it off of other peoples opinions. I just don't want people to get the wrong idea that you are ranting on it based on actual experience in this game which you don't have. That's all I was saying.

I'm just not a fan of saying something sucks based on third party accounts. At least try it if you are going to say it sucks. I can't take the opinion of someone seriously if they haven't even tried it. Someone in the Uncharted 3 thread said it was boring, but he actually played it to say that so I can respect his opinion. I will still get it and form my own opinion, but at least I respect him for telling it like it is.

As larry said, this may give you more business actually because I do totally agree with you about needing a music teacher also , that is why I am not dropping mine. This game will give you fundamentals and basics, but it is NOT going to teach you to be a truly excellent player. No one is going to play through this and start their own band, but it gets people interested and wanting to get to that point to which this game can only take them so far. That to me is a good thing, regardless of what you think about the game. We need to promote more creativity and artistic talent and this is a huge step in that direction over the plastic instruments.

I bought this today at Best Buy and I'm looking forward to playing it in the next few days. I do think it is funny that it says under your friend's name playing Rocksmith Best Buy Edition when they are playing the game. I really think it is silly that they had to put Best Buy as part of the game's title.
