Re: Battlefield 3
PC Reviews are coming in. It sounds like console reviews are being held until the Day-1 patch comes out.
IGN - 9.0
"It delivers scorching multiplayer, fitting of its decade-long pedigree of famously expansive big-team battles, but stumbles over a generic single-player campaign that feels like a different game. "
Game Informer - 9.5
"Battlefield fans hoping for the most polished entry in the series won’t be disappointed by this massive sequel. Multiplayer maintains the high level of quality DICE is known for, and the campaign is the best in franchise history. Outside of the annoying Battlelog and a tacked-on, uninspired co-op mode consisting of six short standalone missions, the only downside to Battlefield 3 is the lack of substantial changes to the multiplayer formula. However, that shouldn’t stop longtime fans and newcomers from enjoying one of the best FPS experiences in gaming."
GameSpy - 5 Stars
"After blazing through the campaign on the hardest difficulty in just over ten hours, I have to admit that Dice could still learn a thing or two from Infinity Ward. The main issue is the lack of truly epic moments, those stupidly spectacular set pieces that helped Call of Duty burn out its own little niche in your long term memory...... With the difficulty set to hard, passing through certain sections is often more a case of luck than skill, and I was saddened to see the designers fall back on ye olde "invisible tripwire stops infinitely respawning enemies" trick. It's not that it's a bad campaign, it's just that it's merely good, rather than brilliant."
1UP - A-
"Before diving into the heart of Battlefield 3, I should address the window dressing: Namely its single-player campaign.... You'll face an unending wave of brain-dead suicidal terrorists until you manage to inch your way up to whatever checkpoint controls enemy spawning, take a few seconds' break, and do the whole thing all over again. It's not bad, but it is frankly uninspired.
The single-player and co-op campaigns both have their issues, but the multiplayer component is worth the price of entry alone."

Joystiq - 4.5 Stars
"Battlefield 3's campaign isn't just a straight line, it's tactically linear. Firefights almost always unfold the same way. This is partly due to enemy AI that often seems stuck to a six foot leash from where they initially appear, but it goes deeper than that. For all the talk of destruction and immersion, Battlefield 3's campaign is a step backward from the manic calamity of Bad Company 2. There's no more blowing holes through walls to make an alternate route. Environmental destruction is cosmetic or scripted.
None of that is a death sentence – Modern Warfare drew the blueprint for the modern linear shooter, and it still managed to be fast, fun, and exciting. But Modern Warfare always gave you something to do, and enemies that were fun to shoot. Battlefield 3 is clearly referencing that blueprint, but it fails in this regard. There aren't that many enemies to shoot, and DICE has made up for that by allowing them to fire through geometry with pinpoint accuracy. It leads to a lot of trial by death and memorization. It's not fun."

Re: Battlefield 3
Relevant quotes from reviews above...given that multiplayer is and always has been the reason to buy a Battlefield game:
IGN: While DICE may not deliver a memorable story here, it doesn't need to when Battlefield 3's online warfare raises every bar imaginable, delivering one of the best multiplayer experiences of the year. I doubt Battlefield purists will complain much about the campaign, honestly; I know you're enlisting in this battle to bring down entire armies online.
Game Informer: The size of the maps, variety of vehicles, and overall scale of Conquest rounds make for some fantastic moments that couldn’t be recreated if you tried. During a match on the Operation Firestorm map, I was taking out enemy tanks by performing sweeping runs with my jet. After the opposing team lost a couple of vehicles, they sent their own fighter into the sky to hunt me down. Once my plane took too much punishment, I ejected and parachuted down to a nearby rooftop. As my teammates battled for flag control a couple of stories below me, I pulled out a stinger, locked onto my airborne attacker, and took the plane down with a homing rocket. I watched it crash about 100 feet in front of me, then hopped down to join the battle for the flag. These types of moments make the experience.
Gamespy: To be honest, the co-op and singleplayer are simply nice optional additions to the real reason to buy Battlefield 3; multiplayer. It's here that Battlefield 3 absolutely dominates, making every other FPS on the market seem positively archaic. And yet, not a great deal has changed from Battlefield 2 or Bad Company. In fact some might argue that the experience has been paired back due to the removal of the commander and squad VOIP system. The introduction of a suppression system is a nice new addition, but at the end of the day it's still the same old conquest and rush modes that Battlefield players know and love. Unlike Battlefield 2, 3 now includes the defining feature of Bad Company; environmental destruction, as well as Rush. So while we've seen all these features before – 64 player conquest, 32 player Rush, full destruction, and vehicular mayhem including jets and choppers – we've never seen them in all squeezed together in one package. Yet here it all is, and it just happens to look better than any game ever created. You see, Frostbite 2.0 is a modern miracle of game engine technology.
Joystiq: But the feel of Battlefield 3's multiplayer combat is unmatched.

Re: Battlefield 3
It's a shame about the single player campaign. I enjoyed the campaign in BC2 since it had a great story and some fun set pieces to make up for the linearity. BC1 had a lesser story but benefited from the fact that the single player campaign was clearly inspired by the multiplayer approach to gameplay.
Either one of those would have been a great choice for the single player campaign in Battlefield 3.

The game is getting 9's and higher and you guys are canceling your preorders? I don't get it. I'll be online on day 1 with this game. Absolutely looking forward to it.

9's based off mp alone...since I will not be doing MP right away, I don't see the need to spend the money on this now...especially when it will drop in price soon enough..

I'm torn too, but think I'll still get it. Not a big MP player and hoped for better co-op campaign. Could probably get my $40 back in trade in if I'm not digging it.

Graphics look good for 360. That has to be with textures installed.
I've read the campaign in BF3 will be much more COD like than BC:2 - more of a corridor shooter. Of course, I thought BC:2 was basically just a coridor shooter as well except for a few parts in the desert.
Regardless, the single player portions of these games doesn't really matter. It's a nice bonus and a good showcase for some eye-candy, but MP has always been the heart and soul of the BF games. And I think the MP delivers.

Yeah, I've never touched the single player campaigns on any of the first person shooters I have bought, so the reviews make me happy.

Re: Battlefield 3
After reading those reviews, I preordered through Amazon. Sounds like you’re getting a pretty good game for $40 and with the online game code the option of buying used is out of the question. I’m not a huge fan of the online COD multiplayer (besides zombie mode), so if it’s better than that I’ll hop on from time to time.

Re: Battlefield 3
As long as the multiplayer is as good at BC2 or better, I'm all about it and will play it constantly...at least a couple of times a week.
I'd love to see a few of the maps from BC2 in the new engine, particularly Atacama Desert, Panama Canal and Arica Harbor...and Harvest Day from BC1 and the last expansion to BC2.
