Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I didn't mean to imply that since Best Buy or Target is lacking hardware that all RB3 software, both disc-based and down-loadable, will immediately become non-functioning. I really was lamenting the fact that my game and DLC may not get the continuing support (in the form of more games and songs) in the future.
My apologies, Pinata. I hope this clarifies what I meant to say, both for you and the rest of the board!

When was "continuing support" ever a guarantee? Where are the hard facts that say it's something we need to be more worried about than our own uncertain mortality?
I think the lamentations at this point are wildly premature at best.

I don't know if this was ever discussed here, but. . .
Lego Rock Band now available on Xbox 360 Games on Demand for $19.99
I wonder if this ties into what that guy was talking about in that interview a couple months ago about wanting to make tracks available from discs that had long since disappeared from retail. . .

Hmmm... I wonder if they have a magic DRM association that would allow an owner of the GoD version of LRB (or any RB title) pay the extra fee to download the track pack for RB2/RB3 use.

This makes me think about being able to buy the RB engine by itself all over again.
I'd be perfectly happy to buy RB4 as a $20 download that comes with no songs. I would. All they'd have to do is release 60-80 songs as DLC simultaneously and you can pick and choose the individuals at $2 each or a full bundle for whatever and maybe even smaller packages that feature an instrument or difficulty at slight discounts.

I had hoped that RB3 was going to be like Burnout Paradise. Modular, always updating... Build the game in chunks. There should be downloadable arenas, instruments, clothing packs, and NEW CHALLENGES ALL THE TIME BASED ON YOUR DLC.

But I'm not quite sure why you are combing through every word within my statements to either pick a fight or try to make me look lesser than what I am.
If you go back and reread what I've written, I've made sure to choose my words carefully enough to not imply hard facts. And I think I've been clear enough within my statements so that even someone that's never met me can see I'm expressing my personal feelings on the subject. I don't claim any of what I say has any empirical validity. It's simply how I feel.
That being said, I get that it's just a video game. If RB goes away tomorrow, you'll be happy to know I'll be just fine. When I contribute posts like these discussing the end of the rhythm game genre, I do it in the context of this board, nothing more than that. I won't be lamenting anything. Sorry if what I've typed comes across as too fanatical or vague for you. Rest assured, I believe I'm a pretty well-adjusted human being. I hope everyone here can say that.
Now, I think I'll go back to reading what others say and occasionally popping my head up with comments like, "Man, I'm in for that new DLC!" every Friday. That's much more fun than getting into pissing matches (real or imagined) like these.

#1: the engine offers optional upgrades and all future DLC is compatible with RB3. This gives little incentive to buy RB4
#2: the engine pulls an RB3 and eliminates backwards-compatibility, you have all the ill will towards the lack of support for previous engines without the most tangible and attention-grabbing update, the new songs.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, "forcing" people to buy the same songs when the new game comes out is good for the community. There's something for everybody when it comes to RB 1/2/3 and L:RB so when it comes to the many people who have all 4 you have a pretty large library of common music to choose from when playing together. Eliminating these common songs would just fracture the community. That already happens to a point with the DLC but the disc-based content balances it out.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
There's two ways that could be handled and both would be disasterous:
#1: the engine offers optional upgrades and all future DLC is compatible with RB3. This gives little incentive to buy RB4
#2: the engine pulls an RB3 and eliminates backwards-compatibility, you have all the ill will towards the lack of support for previous engines without the most tangible and attention-grabbing update, the new songs.

#2: Here I go being a nit-picky, unfunny asshole, but you really mean forward-compatibility. RB3 is fully backward-compatible as would this imagined RB4 (that won't happen because the genre is dead anyway). I've talked about "forced obsolescence" and talked about why there's no technical reason why the old titles couldn't simply ignore what they don't understand in the new DLC. If RB4 was so dramatically different than RB3 that it would mean all new DLC wasn't usable by the old software, then I highly doubt any one of us (read: those that give a shit to discuss pie-in-the-sky hypotheticals or mourn the death of an industry with no facts) wouldn't happily upgrade anyway.
The question is whether or not Harmonix will bother to add more to the core concept of the game. I really can't see where they can go from here that would be beneficial. And if it turns into a niche market, then why bother vying for retail space and using the discs as a loss-leader by bundling many, sure-fire hits?
I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the industry. I don't really care. As long as my 360 doesn't suddenly become an HD-DVD player or Betamax, I don't care. I'll be able to play this shit for a long, long time coming.

Or, in other words, I only came to do two things: kick some ass and drink some beer. And we're almost out of beer.

I've seen a couple of posts on different forums that the Wii version of the Green Day Rock Band game is being closed out for $7.48 at some Targets.
