In for this.
I've never understood why there wasn't one of those Trans-Siberian Orchestra albums released at Christmas time. Cheesy, but I'd buy it.
Last year I brought Rock Band to the Christmas party at work and all people wanted to play were the three Holiday tracks from 2 years ago.

Is there a list somewhere with all songs that were playable in RB2 that aren't in RB3? I keep finding new ones (Cowboys From Hell, Here Comes Alex are the new ones tonight
). I'm wondering how many others I'm missing!

I still have a soft spot for Gutter Ballet from back in the old Headbanger's Ball days.

I know it's Call of Duty related, but I thought I'd put this here since it's somewhat relevant to certain things we've been talking about lately...
http://www.destructoid.com/black-ops...s-188320.phtml
Granted an additional 9,000 sales isn't much, but its more than they would have made just sitting on the music and not letting anyone license it.

If you ever needed proof that videogames have become a major force in entertainment, try to wrap this idea around your head -- a videogame is helping the Rolling Stones to sell music. Yep, thanks to Call of Duty: Black Ops, that legendary band of cradlesnatchers and miscreants is making mad bank.
The excellent "Gimme Shelter" features heavily in the game's marketing, while "Sympathy for the Devil" is played during a level in the single-player campaign. During the week of October 31, "Gimme Shelter" sold 2,000 copies. The next week it sold 5,000. For the week ending November 14? It jumped to almost 11,000.
According to Activision, song holder ABKCO Music & Records demanded to see the game's commercial on a secured laptop that had to be personally flown out to New York by Activision's music affairs VP Tim Riley. Looks like the effort was worth it for both parties.

I'll play devil's advocate with the above article and say that any commercial that brings an older song back into public awareness is going to boost sales, not just that it was a gaming commercial. And while that shows that I see what Chuckd21 is saying, the fact that a commercial ad campaign blitz (Aw, maaan...) across most, if not all the major networks, that not only gamers saw, but the entire television viewing public, only resulted in a gain of 9,000 sales is pretty poor.
Speaking for only the music gaming genre, I'd imagine these numbers are more proof to the record companies/established bands, that it may not be worth the trouble to license masters. At least not without some major scratch as an incentive. And as for that, how much cash can the gaming industry afford to throw at the big names with the genre seemingly under attack as far as it's potential remaining lifespan these days?

I remember when "Don't Stop Believing" was used in the final episode of The Sopranos, the next day and subsequent days it was #1 on iTunes. But I'm sure there was a bunch of bitching and moaning about giving HBO the track...

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
I would imagine they do get paid at both ends. I added the 'major scratch' as I see the 9,000 extra (is it 9, or is it 6? Was the game released on the 14th, or the ad campaign?) as throwaway. And some of those numbers also come from the song being recognizable 'because' it has been around for so long. I'd guess that many people heard it and were like, "oh yeah, I love that song". Thus it's the 'ancient' that works in its favor. Newer songs most likely wouldn't have this type of draw. People may like it, it may be catchy, some may buy it, but I wouldn't think as many as with something of this example's nature.
The effort would be the handing over of the masters. That's their bread and butter.
I wish the numbers had been higher, as I'm with you on wanting the companies to open the vaults. I just see this as a possible way of them excusing the genre, citing numbers like this show it may be on its way out (using my comparison), rather than realizing that with their help, it could easily be revitalized.
Are there hard numbers as to DLC sales on any of the platforms? And if a DLC track goes for 2 bucks, is the music industry getting half of that? I can see why Viacom would want to sell Harmonix if that were the case. Taking into account the overhead, the DLC which seems to be their main source of revenue, looks far less profitable. Are they selling enough tracks to be profitable after keeping the company afloat/paying out the incentives to initially get the music the track is made from?
Your post got me thinking, hopefully I'm wrong

On the fence on Lady Gaga, but I'll probably cave.
Hopefully we'll see some more RB sales this week. Some cheap big packs and albums would be nice.

From what I've heard, most of the DLC tracks are just an up-front fee to the artist, and HMX gets all of the profits. I'm sure there are some artists who want a cut per download, but I'm pretty sure that is not the norm.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
Wanted to post a simple observation and ask a few questions. Here goes.
I just got back from a quick trip to Best Buy (the Best Buy right next to the BB world headquarters, in fact) to pick up an X-Mas gift for my kid.
They are in the midst of Black Friday prep. Tons of games and electronics everywhere. I guess if you want DJ Hero 2, this is the place to be.
At any rate, I went over to the rhythm gaming section to see what was doin'. I have to say, it was pretty depressing...at least if you look at it from a RB3 perspective. If you want keys, make sure it's for the Wii. Because you won't find it for the 360 or PS3, at least in this store. Actually, I've been to this Best Buy (and a few others in my area) a number of times since the release of RB3 and I've never seen a 360 keyboard there. I've seen one PS3 version. And if you want any sort of RB guitar, please look elsewhere. (I've also witnessed this lack of product at local Target stores around the area as well.)
I get that a store like BB might be leery of carrying tons of guitars due to the space they take and the fact that they aren't selling. But what about the keyboard issue? Is it just flying off the shelves? Is Madcatz not supplying enough/not keeping up with demand? Or is this an issue of Best Buy bailing on the game before it had a chance to make it?
I just wonder if part of the RB3 sales issue is the near impossibility to find a keyboard on the system of one's choice in a store. Why buy a game if you can't find the controller that, well, controls the major upgrade?
Do you guys see this same issue in your parts of the country?
Or it could be that music gaming is dead. If that is the case, I'm sad. So is all of my DLC.
Discuss, if you like.

Basically the same story at a Best Buy in Dallas this weekend as I convinced my buddy to buy one. Across the street at Gamestop, however, they had at least one 360 keyboard and Mustang Pro guitar.
Did I miss the memo that our DLC is going to stop working? Are the discs going to self-destruct too?

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution
I've been to 4 Targets recently looking through clearance stuff and not one of them had ANY RB3 hardware for any system in stock. No keyboards, no bundles, nothing. Just the game. They could just be holding them back for Black Friday, but I doubt it. Hardware has been near impossible to find since launch. Hell, Amazon has been out of the 360 bundle for over a week now.
But I have hundreds and hundreds of songs on my hard drive and discs that'll play them all. I've resigned myself to the fact that the genre is dying, but I'll just keep buying DLC and having a good time.
