Warner Bros announced a new Mortal Kombat is in development for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Set for release in 2011, the new title will feature an all-new graphics engine, the return of brutal fatalities, and a "reinvention" of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Long-time series creator Ed Boon once again returns to lead his team at his newly re-named NetherRealm Studios in Chicago.

"We can't wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat," said Boon. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

The game will also include new features, such as a 4-player tag-team mode where players battle in teams of two against each other online. Fans can also enjoy the "deepest story mode of any fighting game" and an "extensive" lineup of the series' iconic characters.

I'm not trying to naysay, but how many times has the franchise been rebooted now?

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

Has it ever been "rebooted"? I stopped paying much attention after the 4th game, and while they've spun off some action games for the most part I thought they've been continuing with the same storyline. Other then the shift to 3D since #4, I don't really know what would constitute a reboot of the franchise.

^ I think MK: Deadly Alliance was considered a reboot to the franchise or a reinvention.

It was actually a pretty decent game too... after that I have no idea what the MK series has been up to.

I just remember Raiden went nuts and became the villain in the last game(s).

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

I've actually enjoyed the games since they went to 3D. The last game (prior to MK vs DC) was pretty bad though... the create your own fatality killed it.

This game looks fun, albeit nothing too original there but it's MK.

Looks fun, tag team should have been implemented long ago.

Kung Lao's fatality sold me on the game already. I'm happy they are going back to 2D.

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

You know, looking at this video, the style of MK has not aged well at all. It feels very "Xtreme" 90s, like the comics of the same period, but it has been long enough that I'm actually a bit nostalgic for some MK action. I might check this out.

don't take this as a threadcrap, but it's amazing to me they still make fighting games. they seem so aged considering the technology that is available today.

It is a "stuck" genre in a way. All you can really do is improve the moves, graphics and interface. Fighting games can't really evolve at this point, they can just play and look better than before.

I'm not a gamer in any way really. I've had a PS3 for almost a year and have yet to buy a game. I played LBP for about 30minutes on it, though I do plan on getting FF and Red Dead. My DSi get's tons of play, though.... mostly for good old fashioned dungeon crawling/RPG ports.

I do remember the old days of getting dropped off at the arcade and playing Street Fighter, Tekken, MK, Killer Instinct, etc. I think there is a certain amount of nostalgia for these kinds of games... though when my roommate (who is a VERY avid gamer) and I got a copy of the new Street Fighter... we got bored pretty quickly with it, despite the fact it was solid.

Have they made a fighting game yet that would essentially be a larger open environment and with fighting mechanics more akin to a Devil May Cry type game? Would that kind of game ever work? I am just surprised they haven't grown the genre more... like a combination of deathmatching, fighting games and 3rd person action?

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

Video looks very impressive. Boon + 2D = I'm excited. Haven't paid much attention to the franchise after hating MK4. MK2 has always been my favorite. Looks like they're going back to their roots here, which I think is the best thing they could do. Really looking forward to this.

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

It's been about 15 years since I last cared about a MK game - and even then it was never about the actual gameplay, as it's always been a shitty fighting game.

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

yeah, I guess it's nostalgia at this point, but I'm hoping this game turns out decent. I remember the crowds in the arcade huddled around the first game back in 1992, and the SNES version removing the blood forcing fans to move to the genesis in droves.

Re: Mortal Kombat - 2011

I'd be willing to check this out if it's super violent, like MK was made to be.

To be fair, I'd say a lot of games in different genres are the same.

That is sick. In both slang meanings of the word. Cool and disgusting.

Most Likely, unless there is an as yet unannounced character which is exclusive to Xbox, which would not be unprecented (the Soul Calibur games commonly do this).

that is what i was thinking, but you would also think they would have announced it by now. i hope they do have an exclusive fighter. how funny and odd would it be to see MC from Halo.
