...and my PS3 has now died. Blinking red light. No warning signs, nothing. Anyone gone through with a repair yourself? There's no way I'm dropping $140 to fix it.

Just got an email from Playstation. Apparently they have decided that the Playstation Rewards program is not ready to launch in April as planned. I had reached Legendary status so they're sending me (or anyone else who reached Select, Pro or Legendary status) an actual real live honest to goodness t-shirt.

I hope with them going back to the drawing board that they're going to add PSN discounts or other things similar to the Xbox rewards, although I have greatly enjoyed my dynamic themes.

MC, sorry to hear about your PS3.

Got that too. So I guess they're pulling the plug? Damn, I wanted that R&C dynamic theme -- I was pretty close to Pro level last time I looked. Now the whole site is down. Oh well, I guess the t-shirt is better than nothing.

Did it happen around 4:30?
I went to watch a disc at that time and the PS3 came on, but did not sign in. I rebooted and it was on for all of a second after auto-signing in, and blip, YLOD. Blu-ray is now stuck in there (I never leave discs in, but figured I'm just powering down and back up again, what could it hurt just this once. D'oh!).

To get your disc out, try this:

This is only for post-launch revisions (not 60GB or 20GB).

YLOD sucks ass and is no longer welcome in my house.

I wish I had thought to declare that before today. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately mine was a pre-MGS 80gb, and it doesn't seem to work. No fan cycle, the ylod just instantly kicks back in. Luckily it was the U2 360 Rose Bowl disc, so it can be replaced for $10 this week (I doubt I'll be cracking the unit open or sending it in for a repair anytime soon).

My system yellow lighted twice the first time I got it fixed at a local shop ($60ish ). The 2nd time it was within two weeks of the 1st time so it was still under warranty @ the shop (no cost). They suggested leaving it vertical in an open area. Did that and haven't had a problem since.

I had mine in an open area, nothing around it at all. It sits on top of a tv stand while the tv is mounted on the wall. Nothing but open air. Finally found a fix on YouTube. Apparently there is quite a market for selling "the fix" information. Took a while to actually find one that tells you what to do and not trying to sell you a .pdf for $40.

How do you back up your profiles and certain games without backing up everything? I tried to back up a few items onto a USB stick using the Back Up utility and it told me I needed another 120 GB in free space. Isn't there a way to back up just your profiles and game saves (and hopefully a couple of games I gameshared early on) onto a stick without doing a full system back up?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

yes, but you need to copy them each separately. select them with Triangle, and there should be an option to copy.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

I tried that with selecting the profiles and it didn't work.

Just got the Socom 4 beta with the code that came with KZ3. My god it took forever to download. ~500mb initial download, a 30mb update, than a 1.5gb content download. Played for a second or two and realized it's been a long time since I've played SOCOM (2002!) so it'll take some adjusting to the controls and game play again!

Decker, if you are a PS+ member you can do individual backups to the Cloud.

i dont think there's a real need to backup a profile. you just re-create it with the same name and sign-into PSN again.

Not profiles. Not games. Just game saves. At least as far as I know.

I gameshared a few games early on. I'd have to re-create those accounts which would be a mega-hassel in order to play them again if my system died. Even if I had already saved the games, their tied to other people's accounts.
One of the many reasons I stopped game sharing pretty early on.

Even if you had a backup, You'd have to deactivate the account on your original system in order to restore or recreate it on the new system, as the account can only be activated on 5 systems at any given time. Assuming the other 4 people in the share still have active systems, you're out of luck either way if your system craps out.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

I still have a spare activation. But I see what you're saying relating to their accounts. Somehow that never occurred to me. Guess I have to just hope my PS3 lasts then.

even if it dies, you can call in and get it de-authorized and recoup your activation.

Yeah, I heard they can be a pain about it, but I just told 'em my old PS3 died and I had bought a brand new one and they were more than happy to oblige, heh...

They're just not willing to fix the problem that they caused by making a system that ins't quite as durable as they touted at first.
