Allows your receiver to do the decoding if need be.

Hmm, any idea what that means?

Apparently direct bitstreams a lossy encode of the main feature audio. Mix first decodes that lossy audio and creates a new bitstream encode that includes the main feature audio, menu sounds, PiP audio, etc.

Honestly, this feature would be more useful on the HDMI out so you could use it with the lossless audio tracks instead.

Oh and 3D stereoscopic games are now supported with this update.

And if my fat PS3 can be updated to output 3D for compatible games, why can't it likewise be updated to bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio? I know people claim it's because it's not HDMI 1.3 yet it can be updated to output 3D. Given that seems to be more complicated than bitstreaming (which is why not all 1.3 players can be upgraded to 3D), you'd think the fat PS3 should be capable of being upgraded to both or none at all.

Can you explain all that to me Roc? If I have a Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio capable reciever now and am using HDMI out on a fat PS3, am I currently getting lossless audio or not? I can never find out that information anywhere.

Yes, because the PS3 is decoding the audio and sending it to the receiver as PCM.

All consumer audio (well, except SACD) is PCM; it's just a matter of whether or not it has been compressed into a lossy or lossless format.

So what is it that the Slim does with bitstreaming that the fat won't do?

Through HDMI you can get lossless via LPCM.

I specified lossy in my previous post because the new settings only affect the optical out.

The slim send the raw audio to your receiver and lets your receiver do the decoding. It should sound the same as when your PS3 does the decoding though. Some people get boners when the "TrueHD" lights up on their receiver.

Nah. I just wanna see the dialnorm offsets reported by my receiver to reduce the amount of guesswork when setting the volume of a disc I hadn't played before.

Thanks for the explanation. Nice to find out that I was jealous over nothing (though I admit seeing the True HD light on my reciever would be at least slightly cool).

ok so tonight has been a flat out craptacular night (before my Avalanche started to get their butts handed to them)

I updated my PS3 to the latest FW 3.3
after that I did the most recent update for Uncharted2
then I went to connect Uncharted 2 and it goes through the syncing live data/connecting that it does whenever there is a new update .... well it froze up during the connecting part and I had to shut down the PS3 from the system
.... now my discs won't read after I restarted and tried multiple discs
the game disc icon doesn't pop up on the XMB anymore

I did a hard reboot of the system and then did a "restore file system" from the recovery menu and got the message "file system corrupt and needs to be restored" ... I selected yes and it went through the process of repairing and then restarting ... I thought that would solve the problem but no.... still can't load up a disc

so is my next option to do a Restore PS3 system and lose all my downloads (which I would have to re-download again to recover)?

anyone have this issue before and fix it?

absolutely bad-ass. I have mlb.tv premium thanks to the $19.99 pricing mistake from March, so I tried it tonight. I had no hiccups whatsoever with the streaming - I compared it to the DirecTV MLB Extra Innings feed and the PS3 feed was about a pitch behind for me, not too bad. There were some video artifacts for me, mostly with the grass - but was not a distraction at all. I wish I had known this was coming prior to the season starting, I would have cancelled the Extra Innings package.

I totally agree about it being bad-ass. I'm also very jealous of that $20 price point. I'm not much of a baseball fan, but one of my employees is crazy for the Tigers in particular and baseball in general (she listens to day games while doing her work). She gets this package every year. I told her about this app this morning. She doesn't have a PS3, so she let me link her account to my PS3. It's very nice and I can see me using it to at least catch some highlights. Of course, the blackouts kill any real interest I might have in this thing -- they consider the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Giants and A's all local teams for Las Vegas though none are closer than four hours away. So I'd never pay $120 for the service, but for free? You bet I'm on board!

that doesn't sounds good musick. I assume the icon in the upper right spins for a while, and the disc never shows up in the XMB?

what model ps3 you got?

that is correct

what model ps3 you got?
40GB

now I know (or have read) many claim when something like this happens that it is a faulty laser but I refuse to believe the timing of the download/locked up connection during the boot of Uncharted 2 which caused me to have to restart the machine is just perfectly timed with a failed laser

And the conspiracy continues. Gotta love how people's PS3s just happen to get jacked after a firmware update...

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

I had those same symptoms with my 60gb. It sounds like the laser issue you mentioned. But its worth fooling around with for a while. If its the same as mine, you can still backup your hard drive, before returning or getting serviced.

The laser failure can happen at just about any instant, so it's certainly possible.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

I have an original 60GB PS3 that I updated yesterday, and after the update, my How I Met Your Mother S4 blu-ray disc 1 won't play. It loads to the part where it says "this disc... blah blah... visit blu-ray.com/forbestresults... blah blah" and after that, it goes back to the XMB. The disc looks completely clean, so I'm pretty sure its not that. And the PS3 will play disc 2. So I don't think it's the laser. My only guess is that the firmware upgrade did something. Unfortunately I don't have another blu-ray player around so I can't test my disc to be 100% sure.

Is it just me or does it seem like there's a friggin' update every time I turn on the machine. It's really annoying.

How often do you turn it on?

Maybe once or twice a week. I wouldn't mind if it didn't take so long. This latest update took over 15 minutes (and I have a blazing fast connection).

The worst part of it is that they don't let you pick and choose if you want the update or not - the two things this latest update had (3D and MLB), I couldn't give two fucks about - so why are they taking up precious space on my hard drive?
