I think maybe the problem was solved in post 5 of that thread:

Perhaps it is a hardware failure via Sony kill signal.
 Seems even more appropriate now that we know it's just pre-Slim hardware.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

apparently this is the reason (again from the thread above)

Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 and the real time system clock to desync, messing up timing like Digital Rights Management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason.

This is the same CPU that is powering up mobile devices like zune and blackberries, they have been affected with this bug, so they done some software patches. A syscon update can also fix this problem The Slims ps3s aren't affected with this problem because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug, this cpu is always on even when your ps3 is powered off.

A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila...

BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information

Sony owes me some fucking money or free service if you ask me. I invested 1200 dollars in two 60s and both barely lived past the two year mark and now this shit. Sony really has their stuff together.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

So basically this is going to happen at some other random non-leap year 3/1 date? Or are they actually going to patch it?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

So part of the system thinks it's 2/29/2010, but because that date doesn't exist the rest of the system freaks out? I wonder if that means that once the dumb part thinks it's 3/1/2010 and the rest thinks it's 3/2/2010 things can go back to normal and re-synch, or if once the damage is done it requires a firmware patch to get everything back together.

Guess we'll find out in 2 hours or so.

Hmmm, interesting...that would be amusing if that was Sony's "solution". Just don't use your PS3 for 24 hours and you should be ok.

They should provide some dynamic theme of a clock or something for FREE ;)

The "Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time" theme would be perfect. :)

What can they do? Rush a patch out through the web that gets hammered and there's other possible implications? Or just wait it out and then deliver a patch in a reasonable, tested manner for an issue that is no longer pressing?

Still, knowing the hardware they used was known to have this problem, they should have seen this coming.

They likely did and didn't give a shit. We're talking about a company that put out Rear Projection Sets knowing that their optical block was defective right out the door.

that, in a nutshell, is their solution.

Maybe the assumed all pre-Slim PS3s had already YLODed and since they charge an assload to fix them, no one would notice?

And yet they claim there is no problem with their FAT units.

It's just a good thing I'm enjoying this gen's games so much, because the hardware is utter and complete ass. The console war has devolved into whose hardware is the least crappy, and given a generous warranty from Microsoft, it's probably a tossup. -ohbfrank-

The problem with this gens hardware is it's more like a computer and they keep shoving too much shit on it somethings bound to break. There's a good reason why Nintendo wii has the lowest failure rate.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

Well I played my PS3 last night around midnight till 2 am. I played Army of Two (pt 1). I also DO NOT have my system set up to automatically log in to PSN. I have to do it manually. I didnt do that. Infact I havent logged on since I got the GOW3 demo a few days ago. I also played Resistance (pt1) before AoT, both games do not have trophies.

Am I in the clear? I never saw an error nor noticed a date change.

Yeah...cause 95% of them haven't been turned on since 2008.

I'd say it's a combo of that and rushing to the market to beat the other guy. In the end, it's us who gets beaten....with a big fucking stick of suck.

Mines back on now...

I'll just call it Playstation's Mandatory 24 Rest Period.

Although, my PS3 still says it's 2/28/10.
