PlayStation 3 Suffering From Widespread PSN Error
Many owners left unable to play certain titles tonight due to login error.

February 28, 2010 -

SCEA is looking into widespread reports tonight of PlayStation Network login errors causing many left unable to play games, and even lose trophies, on certain PlayStation 3 consoles.

"We're aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we're looking into it," the company said in a statement. "Stay tuned for updates."

Forum members and e-mail tipsters are saying this problem is primarily affecting owners of the older model of the PlayStation 3, and is even causing users to lose trophies previously earned. Many titles, such as Heavy Rain, are also now unplayable due to connection issues with Sony's servers.

One theory points to an issue with the console's internal calendar, which is reportedly resetting pre-slim models to 12/31/1999.

It's unclear at the moment how widespread this issue is.

IGN has contacted SCEA for additional updates on what's causing these errors.

Update: Sony has confirmed that slim PS3s (the 120/250 GB models) appear to be unaffected.

Update 2: According to Sony's US PlayStation blog, the company has "narrowed down the issue and have engineers working to restore service even as you read this." However, despite more calls to Sony there's no indication on the time it'll take to fix – or indeed what the fix will be. More updates the instant we get them.

So, is the PS3 slim working without issues?

One thing we know for sure, the fix has to be done on the server-side. They can't push an update to the affected consoles because the affected consoles can't connect to PSN.

Regarding Leap Year, I seem to recall the PS3 not being smart enough to auto-adjust for DST so clearly they have issues with making things sensible for the user.

It would be more funny if they get an RROD turning the Xbox 360...

I agree, it would have been funny if the 360 had an RRoD.

I'm betting you could get a repaired Xbox faster than they'll have their network problem resolved.

Glad I got through Heavy Rain before this stuff hit. I'd be super pissed! (And feel for those that haven't.)

I expect a new firmware release to fix this problem but also expect it to break something else.

How are they going to deliver a firmware update to consoles that can't connect to PSN?

I swear to god, if I have to download an image and burn a disc or use a thumbdrive to fix this problem, I'm going to be fucking pissed.

Does this affect Blu-Ray playback at all? BD-Live?

I was able to watch Blu-ray Discs yesterday with no issues, even with this going on....however, I didn't try any BD-Live stuff, so can't speak on that specific feature...

Re: The Official PS3 thread - resolutions are meant to be broken

I'm just wondering if it extends to users that aren't gamers. I tend to think gamers are more savvy with the net and firmware updates via web sources than someone that got a ps3 solely as a BD player, like my mom. I'm sure as shit not going to enjoy trying to talk her through that remotely if it has to be done.

Does it need to log in to PSN to update the firmware, or just connect to the internet? I think it just needs an internet connection, but I'm not positive.

I expect people to blame hardware failures on this for quite some time, even if it's completely unrelated.

this doesn't make any sense. So you can't play PSN games that you downloaded if your internet connection is off, and they can't verify licenses? You'd think people would have ranted about this already, if true.

I guess I can't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it's hosted by PSN which is also accessed with an internet connection. I guess it's possible the firmware is delivered parallel to (and not through) PSN.
