Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
The newer model has much easier screws to remove.
Here's my latest adventure with Playstation CS: I realized last month that I had never opened my Launch edition of Twisted Metal that I bought last Summer on sale. I was concerned that my voucher for TMB would have expired, so I checked. It was actually good until 2/14/14, so I had a full year left, thankfully. I tried to redeem the code via the PSN Store and got a message that it was either already used or expired. I called CS at once. The guy was of no help and said I needed to send them a copy of the voucher and my sales receipt. Well, I certainly didn't have that old receipt and didn't think it was worth the detective work for an old PS2 game anyway, so I just let it go. Then a week later, I decided to try and play the game. That's when I discovered that the game's online pass was also redeemed/expired. Now I was mad. I tried to remember where I had bought it, thinking it was Target. Then I recalled it was a Reward Zone online coupon. Sure enough, I found the purchase in my Reward Zone history, went to Best Buy and printed out a copy of the receipt. I called CS again yesterday and gave them all the info. This guy was more helpful and said those codes weren't redeemed, but were showing as expired (clearly a mistake and the Online Pass should never expire). He's having me send in copies of everything including my sales receipt in order to fix things and get me new codes. I asked him why I had to provide proof of purchase when he can clearly see this is an unused, unexpired code and it's obviously Sony's screw-up. Why should I have to prove to them that i"m not a thief? He agreed with me but said that's the way they do things. Anyway that seems really unfair and wrong to me. I'm just lucky I was able to track the receipt down. If anyone wants to buy Twisted Metal, be sure to keep your receipt if you ever want to play online. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
That's weird. You probably picked it up the same time I did (I think it was only $19.99 w/ the gaming reward zone coupon). I still need to go back and finish that one. Multiplayer is the one thing that was always great with those games, but the lobby was pretty much dead when I tried joining a match. Announcing that there wasn't going to be any DLC probably didn't help either.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
The stupid expiration dates on their codes is the only reason my entire ps3 game collection has been opened. I typically don't open my games until I am going to play them or I know there is a code inside. I ended up opening around 30 games that I wasn't sure about and none of the freaking games had codes...

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Last night my PS3 (MGS4 BC Model) froze up while playing Arkham City. It wasn't the first time this has happened to me during a game, but it was the first time it happened during Arkham City, so I was a bit concerned. I powered it off and then back on and there was no issue coming back up. It was late and I didn't have it in me to attempt the challenge I was doing again, so I just installed Sleeping Dogs (which I had downloaded from PS+ but not installed yet), shut it off and when to bed.
Today, it won't boot up at all. I'm not getting any yellow light that I can see, but it doesn't look good. Green light comes on, I hear the fans and such start up, then it immediately shuts off and goes to blinking red. Guess I'm screwed. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Had an issue similar to that with a previous PS3 and it was a dead hard drive.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I took it to a shop this morning that said they would look at it for free, and they want 80 bucks to fix it, and he claims it won't break again, but there's only a 30 day warranty. I think I'll just invest in a new one. Since it's a brick anyway, I might try the hair dryer trick just to see if I can get it running long enough to get my game out and maybe do a HD backup.

Call Sony customer service first. They replaced my launch unit with a 160 GB slim model for $100. That comes with a one year warranty

That's a good deal. Nice.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Hair dryer trick got it going long enough for me to get my game out and push my arkham city save to the cloud, which were the most important things. It died again while trying to do a system backup though, so I will have to redownload all my stuff again, of which there is a lot, which is why I was hoping the backup would work. Oh well, I can live with this.

if you get it up again, make sure to de-authorize games & video when you're all done. or if its dead, call support and they will de-authorize for you. you don't want to burn one of your 2 authorized systems on a dead unit.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Okay, I picked up a year of PS+ from Best Buy using their coupon. What games should I be downloading?
|
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Just go to the Plus section of the PSN Store and purchase all of the games that are free, whether vita or PS3. You can cancel the downloads of everything you aren't sure you want now. That will at least guarantee that you can download it later if you want. The key is just to purchase the free plus items while they are free.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I highly recommend Sleeping Dogs.

As shumway said, add all the games to your account whether you want them now or not. That way they are always in your account, even if your plus subscription expires. When you re-subscribe, you get all those games you added back. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I just got hit up for a software update on my PS3.
PSN version 4.45 now adds the ability to turn off trophy notifications. I guess for those that really don't care about trophies can finally play in peace. EDIT: DON'T UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM!!!!! There's a huge bug/flaw in this update that is bricking PS3s. I didn't see the warning until it was too late for me. Fortunately, my PS3 accepted the update without any problems, and didn't get bricked. Either Sony quickly fixed the problem, or I was very very lucky. That being said, I'd hold off on the update until the fix is official. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Wait for 4.46. The latest update bricked my system and from looking around on the interwebs, looks like I'm def not the only one. Ugh, thanks Sony...

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Whoa. I updated mine yesterday. Guess I was an update behind. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
From what I've been reading, the problem is with people who have upgraded their hard drives in their systems. That would seem to make sense as a lot of the people who have been bricked are using original fats, and have likely put in a bigger drive.
I'm using the original drive, so that would play into it as well. I'd still say there's no reason to risk it until they fix it regardless. |
